That was also the case at Camp Randall into the 80's. Maybe beyond?. Seems like night games are more of an atmosphere for drinking issues, rather than whether or not expensive beers in cups are sold until the third quarter.

Michigan- Michigan State Halloween night game was the worst abuse of alcohol I have seen in Ann Arbor.

Having a Labatt at Yost was nice eh?...having something much stronger ( grain alcohol) was needed during our last basketball season. Anyway no one got crazy at these games that I witnessed.

I feel uptight on a Saturday night
Nine o'clock, the radio's the only light
I hear my song, it pulls me through
Comes on strong, tells me what I got to do, I got to

Everybody's gonna move their feet
(Get down!) Everybody's gonna leave their seat
You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City
(Get up)! Everybody's gonna move their feet
(Get down!) Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Good points. Unfortunately…

Good points. Unfortunately many of the public suburban schools are facing similar funding and quality issues.  In the 60's -70's Gesu was popular for those around those great historic neighborhoods: Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forrest, University District. Would love to see that area and those beautiful homes come back strong.

As I told everybody last…

As I told everybody last night, I was reading in Rolling Stone where they said, "Detroit audiences are the greatest rock and roll audiences in the world." I thought to myself, "Shit! I've known that for ten years!"

Congrats to Mayor Duggan and all those that are a part of the Detroit Renaissance. I have lived in or gone to Detroit for decades. There is definitely a pride and buzz that hasn't been seen since before the Riots/ Tigers '68 World Series.

Having very affordable housing, access to Canada ( Gordie Howe bridge will be ready soon), the Riverfront, great clubs/music scene, 4 major sports,  lots of open space from demolished houses, good freeways, a great international airport, make it very attractive for young people to check out. Climate change also is helping. My neighbor who moved from Nashville says SE Michigan  weather feels like Nashville's 10 years ag0.

Between AA, Detroit, and Up North Michigan is a great place to be. If the Tigers could score runs and the Red Wings could play defense it would be near perfect.

If one can't get into UM -…

If one can't get into UM - AA, there is nothing wrong with Washtenaw CC for a year or two and then apply to UM - AA later. Probably smart financially.

Lots of cool architectural homes in Oak Park, so maybe Burns Park would something to look at? The historical Old West Side of AA is a neat neighborhood as well.

Someone else mentioned the AA school system financial issues, which would be a concern of mine. https://www.a2schools.org/domain/4806 .  Skyline is the newest AA high school and with the highest ranking.  The areas between AA and Saline ( big school) and/or Dexter ( smaller school) are areas worth considering ... UM students do commute from there...and Father Gabriel Richard HS (Catholepistemiad right?) on the North east side of AA.

Taxes on a $700,000 house in AA proper may be worth checking into before you make any decisions ( versus living just outside the city and getting a 1/2 acre more of land with 1/2 the taxes).

Their manager was John…

Their manager was John Sinclair who passed away April 2nd this year.

from the Metro Times: Sinclair rose to prominence as a poet known for his radical politics. In the 1960s, he became manager of Detroit rock band MC5, booking them as a house band of sorts at the former Grande Ballroom, where they recorded their landmark album Kick Out the Jams. (His wife, Leni Sinclair, was a notable photographer of the scene.) In 1968, under Sinclair’s management, the MC5 performed for the massive rally outside of the chaotic Democratic National Convention in Chicago protesting the Vietnam War.

Sinclair was also a founding member of the White Panther Party, an anti-racist socialist group aligned with the Black Panthers.

In 1969, Sinclair was sentenced to ten years in prison after offering two joints to a woman who was an undercover cop. The severity of the sentence sparked protests that inspired John Lennon to write a song called “John Sinclair” and sparked Ann Arbor’s annual Hash Bash, a rally where attendees smoked pot openly on the University of Michigan campus that eventually evolved into the heart of the movement to decriminalize and legalize cannabis in the state.

Related

Sinclair was released from prison in 1971, and later moved to pot-friendly Amsterdam. He also penned a cannabis column for Metro Times.

Sinclair eventually returned to Detroit. When Michigan’s first official cannabis dispensaries for adult use opened in 2019, Sinclair, who used a wheelchair in recent years, was among the first people in line to purchase it.

At the time, cannabis activist Rick Thompson reportedly asked Sinclair, “Things have come full circle, haven’t they, John?” Sinclair retorted, “It would be more full if they came and gave me back the weed that they took.”

The passion for teaching kids and love of representing Michigan made these men true winners and kept them young.

James Henry, women's track coach at UM for 42 years, just retired in 2022 is another one. He also was the first black varsity head coach at UM.

Outside of UM, I always pull for basketball Coach Greg Kampe, 40 years and counting all at Oakland U.

Urbanchek's UM Legend diving counterpart, Dick Kimball, is 89 I believe. I ran across this video of Kimball doing trampoline tricks at Hill Auditorium and then in his 70's doing tricks off the high dive at Canham, including riding a bike off the platform.

Racism spoiled UM football…

Racism spoiled UM football and track star, Willis Ward's appetite to compete but he had defeated Owens head to head. He's better known for being future President, Gerald Ford's roommate on road games and not being allowed to compete against Georgia Tech.  Would be nice to see Willis Ward memorialized.

The post-Olympic years were…

The post-Olympic years were difficult for Owens, who competed in such sideshow events as racing horses and accepted several demeaning jobs to earn a living. In 1951 touring with the Harlem Globetrotters, Owens received a rousing ovation before speaking to 75,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium. Acting mayor of West Berlin Walter Schreiber then took the microphone to proclaim, "Hitler wouldn't shake your hand—I give you both hands!" and reached for Owens' arms. Although the stories about Hitler refusing to acknowledge the African American Olympian may also have been exaggerated, the dramatic moment fit right into Owens’ wheelhouse, and he filed it away for use in what eventually became a successful public-speaking career.

It was a great game and the Rangers seemed like they were on the PK quite a bit. Fantastic goalkeeping on both sides. Trouba already had three penalties in this game. Carolina was the better team but their power play was ineffective...also can't believe Colorado won yesterday after being down 3-0 to Dallas.

I buy the Chardonnay. It sells for $20 but can be had for $15 at the same store I met him at. Easy to find that ( or any A2) Meijer, if you are going to the Big House. Great to serve to Spartan and Buckeye guests.

His whiskey is smooth. Charles also has pretty good Paso Robles Chardonnay, Cabernet and Red Blend under the Intercept brand.

One morning, after the lousy 2019 home loss to OSU, I was sent  out to the local A2 Meijer on Zeeb Road to pick up eggs and some other stuff in the dairy section. Luckily the wine section (why is it next to dairy), Charles Woodson was in sweats helping a guy load up his wine bottles in a display. Nobody was around so we got to grumble about the state of UM football then ( seems like a million years ago) and then talk a little wine, which he got into when he was playing for the Oakland Raiders. Just a great , great passionate UM guy.

I bought a few bottles  ( to go with my eggs) which he autographed and he made an awful weekend very memorable in a good way.

Its been 41 years since M undergrad graduation and 39 years since M MBA graduation and it's definitely a great time to reflect on time passage and how great A2 was/is. M Daughter is marrying M SIL in three weeks and M AI GS son is flying out to Europe tomorrow to start a summer job. Between these changes, and the transfer portal <S> , the days of old seem like a million years ago.

Great get!  Coach May seems to be the best of Coach Beilein and Deion Sanders. Even if he stops here, which he won't, Coach May has done a terrific job in a short amount of time. The Maize Rage should be something with this new influx of offensive and defensive talent and exciting style of basketball, not seen at Crisler in two years.

Chris Spielman may have been as dominant of an UM opposing player as I have ever seen and is right up there with Barry Sanders for the old timers as a most beloved Lion. He and Dan Campbell are guys you just love for their passion/ work ethic, no ego, and doing all the things the right way.

(No subject)

Some really bad questions from the Cleveland media but these two, well spoken, guys handled it well. Good to see Zak walking away looking healthy at the end.

Illinois receiver Isaiah Williams did not get chosen during this weekend's NFL Draft, but he has found a new home.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Williams is signing a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions. Williams declared for the draft despite having the opportunity to apply for a sixth year. He led the Big Ten led the Big Ten in receptions (82) and was second in receiving yards (1,055) last season.
