GWIII Has Re-entered the Transfer Portal
Per 247's Matt Zenitz:
Michigan basketball four-star freshman guard and former Class of 2023 top-100 recruit George Washington III has re-entered the transfer portal, @247Sports has learnedhttps://t.co/lOivM0VeDp https://t.co/DVN3zIXZVK pic.twitter.com/BxLGX2AGsp

It's a good thing his namesake wasn't this indecisive.

HAHAHA! Well played! Best of luck to him, wherever he lands. Transfer portal... is this thing too loosy goosey?

Not according to General Lee...
Is this some kind of Revolutionary-Civil War mashup?
He speaks of Charles Lee. He and Washington had beef.
Thanks! I'm going to learn some history now.

Can't believe you don't know about George Washington, Jr.
They needed to squash that beef on Thanksgiving.
Generous interpretation
Whole milk, too, I hope.
Sign of the Beefcarver
I was referencing a lyrics from Hamilton:
[LEE]
Washington cannot be left alone to his devices
Indecisive, from crisis to crisis
The best thing he can do for the revolution
Is turn n’ go back to plantin’ tobacco in Mount Vernon
Lee wasn't decisive enough to accuse Washington of being indecisive.
Who fought the battles of retreat better - Robert E or Washington?
Fighting retreat can be a thing of beauty when it causes your army to survive. And for my money, Washington did a better job...
It's not retreating. It's "advancing to the rear."
A relevant cool story bro:
Having attended Christian schools for most of my early years, I now find great hilarity in the portrayal of Washington and other such figures in my history classes. We learned almost nothing about his blunders, but a lot about how he and his men endured at Valley Forge because he was a praying man who trusted God to see him through his mission. We also never learned about the Ottoman empire having any sort of role in World War I. What a time.
Oh a flip-flopper, eh?
Not according to General Lee...
He definitely shit the bed at the Battle of Monmouth
Wanna bet a $1 he was?

Yeah, I alluded to it in the other basketball post that GW3 or Phat Phat would see them getting recruited over. May is continuing to recruit wing players to play the 3 or the 4. They don't have much depth there.

Was it ever uncool?
Bringing in someone else that plays the same position as a HS recruit is not recruiting over them. Recruiting over someone is bringing in a younger guy to take their spot.

May literally brought Pippen and Cason to take their spot. May also brought in Gayle and Jones.

He came.
He went.
He came again.
He went again.

Oh no, you didn't. Yep, you did. No. Yes. Maybe. Yes!

He does this a few more times and he might be mistaken for a DT from MSU.
April 29th, 2024 at 12:46 PM ^
Or even an OL from Alabama/Iowa.
April 29th, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
Or a WR turned DB turned WR again from Michigan/Ole Miss...

I have the same reaction as last time: OK.
I mean, it's hard to get too upset about this, just like it was hard to get excited when he came back. He couldn't get on the court for the worst UM team in years, except when Dug wasn't eligible to play. Yes, he was a freshman, and hopefully will get better. But with the influx of portal guards, he obviously thinks that his road to more playing time is blocked, and wants to try elsewhere - again.
So - again - good luck to you.
If I go there will be trouble, if I stay it will be double.
This indecision’s bugging me, if you don’t want me set me free.

With all due respect, stay gone this time. I mean, come on. This could have been figured out less publicly.

When he announced that he's back, there were no guards on the roster. May recruited 5 guards. The situation has changed.
Did he think May was not going to bring in more guards?
He knew he was going to bring in more guards, but he probably didn't think he was going to bring in 5 guards which effectively pushed him out of the rotation minutes.
He didn't have any idea what incoming transfers were going to commit or not commit when he first came out of the portal. He's making decisions based on a RAPIDLY changing roster situation, and while I won't say it's a good look to bounce in and out of the portal like that, I think it's much more a product of the environment than any statement on GWIII's ability to "figure things out."
Honest question: Why should he care how many players May recruits? If he just wants a new scene, then this indecision is weird. But if it's about playing time. . . sheesh, he hasn't even begun to compete for a spot. Does GW3 have any confidence in his game to win the job? Did May tell him he's riding the bench no matter what (which would go against everything we know about May so far)? If no and no. . . why does GW3 fancy himself a competitive athlete, if he's afraid of competition?
I'm old enough to remember the story of an M athlete whose position was challenged by a five-star wunderkid (an obstacle far more daunting than GW3's). After some soul-searching he marched into the HC's office, told him he's gonna prove he's the best one for the job, and worked his ass off. Things turned out pretty well for Tom Brady.
GW3 has control over how he himself prepares for next season, and it's the only thing he has control over. He could tell May, "I'm gonna prove you wasted your time on these transfers." This is what he's doing instead. I'm like, OK, happy trails man, but if we're allowed to mock OSU for being sawft, at least they showed up. What do we even call this? Where's the dawg in you, GW3?
One thing the portal and NIL craziness has done is to put a final stake in the notion that anything more than a tiny, tiny percentage of players prioritize getting an education at any particular school, whether it's Michigan or some other institution. The quality and specific nature of the education they get is far down the list of the things that actually determine their decisions, and I think it's actually been that way for a long time.
It's not like this will be plastered all over the national news. The kid is making decisions based on changing situations. It's not his fault people like us are constantly scouring every obscure source of information on all things Michigan sports related.

Such much for Eli Brooks the second leading us to the final four.

Dude, just make a decision and stick with it. Maybe talk to your parents or old coach or some mature friend and get some perspective.
