Do we know if Dantonio is…

Do we know if Dantonio is still hanging around the AD? If so, that's the first thing that needs to change if they're ever going to be a respectable program. I don't know much about Smith, but I'm not too optimistic. He's coming from one little brother situation (Oregon) to another one on steroids.

If I had to bet, I'd probably put my money on them hitting that 7.45 point improvement. I really hope I'm wrong, but Chiles is probably close to a 1TD/game improvement over the absolute shit they had last year, especially if they can cut down on the turnovers. That first game will be interesting, though. If they can't put up a ton of points on FAU, it's not going to be a pretty season.

Have you settled on a diary series for this season yet? MSU's goal of 23.4 could be a good one. 😊

Fun post, PopeLando.re: Can…

Fun post, PopeLando.

re: Can Sparty Start Scoring Points Again? I really hope not. The world is just so much more fun when that fanbase, including my shit-talking BIL, is miserable. I feel bad for a few of my Sparty friends, but I get over it.

I think one major problem that Sparty faced last year was that they were just so damned undisciplined. Maybe this is par for the course for MSU teams from Dantonio onwards, but the number of turnovers, stupid penalties, etc. were some of the worst in FBS. These were the types of things that Harbaugh preached, and Jonathan Smith seems to be an improvement over whatever it was we saw from MSU last year.

I think if Smith can get that turned around, it'll make a difference. At the very least, hopefully they'll be less dirty than under Dantonio.

And then there's that defense. At least Iowa's offense could fall back on a stellar D. When Michigan State's craptastic offense came off the field it was replaced by the 76th ranked total defense and the 84th ranked scoring defense.

Hoping he picks UM, but…

Hoping he picks UM, but wherever he goes, I wish the dude luck. There's something pretty cool about a kid getting a chance to move from D2 to some pretty damn good D1 schools.

I'm not sure if any of this…

I'm not sure if any of this is included in your revenue sources, but I think there's also some additional revenue that could be shared with the players, at least in CFB. This is from collegefootballplayoff.com.

The following is a breakdown of the CFP revenue distribution:

  • For the 2023-24 academic year:
    1. Each conference will receive $300,000 for each of its schools when the school’s football team meets the NCAA’s APR for participation in a postseason football game. Each independent institution will also receive $300,000 when its football team meets that standard.
    2. A conference will receive $6 million for each team that is selected for a Playoff Semifinal. There will be no additional distribution to conferences whose teams qualify for the national championship game. A conference will receive $4 million for each team that plays in a non-playoff bowl under the arrangement.
    3. Each conference whose team participates in a Playoff Semifinal, Cotton, Fiesta, or Peach bowls, or in the national championship game, will receive $2.85 million to cover expenses for each game.

I'd say that all of the $300,000 for meeting the APR should go to the players, or maybe even just the players that meet the academic standards? They're the ones that are splitting the time between practice and school and still able to manage their grades, right? So why shouldn't they get all of this money?

A certain percentage (if not all) of all CFP ($6million)/bowl($4million) money given to the conference should go to the players as well, especially since it looks like the expenses are already paid (point #3). Coaches get bonuses for making a bowl game, making the playoffs, winning the CFP, etc, so why shouldn't the players?

I'm not sure how the B1G deals with this money for making the CFP, but I think they divide it up equally among all schools in the conference, so the team that plays in the CFP would get significantly less than $6 million. Maybe this needs to be renegotiated?

I remember when Burrow and…

I remember when Burrow and Fields made comments about never taking on-campus courses and know that Burrow did all his MA work online. I could see that being a selling point for some athletes. Does UM allow their athletes to take online classes let alone entire online line degrees?

This is excellent work!

I've always been confused about the contrast between Harbaugh as a player and a coach. I'm too young to have any memory of his playing days, but from what I can gather (watching old clips, talking to people that remember him, etc.) he was pure confidence as a runner and passer. Yet as a coach, he's very conservative with his QBs (running and throwing). Am I off base here? If not, how do we reconcile Harbaugh the QB vs. Harbaugh the QB coach? Is it just another feature (not glitch) of the Harbaugh operating system?

Also, how long have you been waiting to use that screenshot of Montana41GoBlue's comment? I'm impressed, but also a bit worried about what other comments you might be saving for the future. 😊

I'm guessing that VaBlue was joking with that post you quoted. When I think of shitty and condescending, it's usually something more like this:

The site is making you put spaces before the punctuation?

or maybe

Fail all around on this one, OP.  You can do better.

Oh, this one's my favorite. When others were ribbing the OP with levity, you posted

Scam bullshit.  Doesn't belong on this board

Yes, the board is much better used as a craigslist "Help Wanted" forum where people are constantly asking for money and favors.

But those examples are from your posting history, not VaBlue's. I don't personally have a problem with the occasional condescension. And it seems like you don't either, so maybe you shouldn't be busting others' balls for doing it themselves.

Well, according to Brian…

Well, according to Brian Kelly, LSU doesn't buy players. So there must be something else that's attracting Underwood to LSU.

But then once (if?) there's…

But then once (if?) there's a salary cap, extra money will just be handed out under the table like in the days before NIL. Teams that want to spend the most on recruits will always spend the most on recruits.

Question for you, XM. I know you've talked about doing some building on the board here before. Or anyone else reading this that has thoughts/suggestions.

I want to install a pull-up bar (simple enough) but the only good place for it is outside on my pergola. I was thinking about attaching it to a 2x6x10 joist on the pergola, but I'm worried about the torque that a pull up might create on the joist. Any thoughts? Would it be ok or should I maybe double up the 2x6?

I'm not much of a builder and don't want to come crashing down in the middle of a pull up.

Thanks! I have fun doing that and I'm glad you like it.

It's amazing the things you can find that correlate with football wins. 😊 I love the website Spurious Correlations

A linear line chart with years as the X-axis and two variables on the Y-axis. The first variable is The number of mechanical drafters in Colorado and the second variable is Season wins for the Denver Broncos. The chart goes from 2003 to 2022, and the two variables track closely in value over that time.

It even gives an AI generated explanation:

As the number of mechanical drafters in Colorado decreased, there was a subtle but significant shift in the airflow dynamics across the state. This unexpected change in air currents led to a slight disruption in the trajectory of footballs during crucial game moments. Essentially, the absence of these drafters inadvertently drafted a new playbook for Mother Nature, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "air support" for the Denver Broncos.

I hope Harbaugh is taking notes here:

A linear line chart with years as the X-axis and two variables on the Y-axis. The first variable is The number of movies Johnny Depp appeared in and the second variable is Season wins for the Los Angeles Chargers. The chart goes from 2017 to 2023, and the two variables track closely in value over that time.
