I appreciate the positivity…

I appreciate the positivity. One of the challenges though is the compounded effect of how many times similar scenarios have played out. It takes its toll.  All games aren't equal either. Rivalry games have a lot more meaning.

On the plus side, it was great to see Andrel Anthony have a breakout game. Hutchison, Ojabo, Moody and McNamara were also outstanding.

Imagine if everyone on D…

Imagine if everyone on D gave the effort of Hutchison and Ojabo?

This keeps coming back to coaching. If our players aren't motivated, the coaches either have to do a better job motivating or a better job recruiting self motivated players.

Totally agree. Also, Walker…

Totally agree. Also, Walker is easily their best player. What if Josh Ross went everywhere that Walker went the entire game? If you can have a Dax Hill travel to cover the number 1 receiver, why can't we have Josh Ross shadow Walker? I know they could create some blocking schemes to counter that to a point, but it's hard to imagine it would be worse than what we just gave up.

1:52 left in the game. We…

1:52 left in the game. We have 3rd and 3 from the 31 yard line and we throw an incomplete pass near the end zone. We can't waste plays. GET THE FIRST DOWN! We can't leave it up to converting on the 4th down play - there is too little margin for error. We could get a tipped pass, a receiver could slip, drop the ball, or in this case, a no call for PI.  This is classic Michigan football under Jim Harbaugh. We have such a small margin for error because of the play calling. Looking at you Josh Gattis.

I know Harbaugh gets the…

I know Harbaugh gets the blame because he is the head coach, but what about Josh Gattis? Still waiting on the speed in space.

Alex, excellent write up, as…

Alex, excellent write up, as usual.

Fantastic breakout game by Andrel Anthony!

Kudos to Jake Moody, Aiden Hutchison, Cade McNamara and Eric All!

On the last drive, I sure wish we had kept throwing more over the middle because McNamara was throwing darts. When he has to throw it all the way across the field, the ball hangs in the air too long and gives the defender too much of an opportunity to break on the ball. ( I know the last play was over the middle and didn't work, but it should have been pass interference).

Excellent recap!

Excellent recap!

Not only are we not calling…

Not only are we not calling end arounds or outside runs, how many play action passes did you see? Seriously, what is the scheme here? It almost seems like Gattis doesn't know what to call, so he'll just run it up the middle and say our identity is a power running team.

There was one third down…

There was one third down play when Rutgers ran a run blitz had all 11 defenders at the line to stop the run.  A pass to someone releasing would have been an easy touchdown,

We did recruit a quarterback…

We did recruit a quarterback who can do that: JJ McCarthy. We just need to play him.  I like Cade. I just think we need McCarthy's athleticism to overcome the uncreative play calling.

The more I watch this…

The more I watch this offense, the less confidence I have in Josh Gattis' ability to coordinate.

What's the master plan here?

We were promised "speed in…

We were promised "speed in space" and now we hear that our identity is a power running team?

We don't have the talent to compete with that style of offense.

When Rich Rodriguez left…

When Rich Rodriguez left West Virginia and Bill Stewart replaced him, a West Virginia booster said said that Michigan got the architect and we got the painter. While Rodriguez didn't pan out overall at Michigan, the offenses were creative and put up points. (The defense was another story).

I feel the same way about Joe Moorhead and Josh Gattis. Someone else got the architect and we got the painter.

Joe Moorhead is the brand new OC at Oregon and they already beat Ohio State.

The announcer on TV said as…

The announcer on TV said as much. He said Jim Harbaugh's philsophy for a quarterback is to "not lose the game".  I always liked Jimmy Johnson's philosophy of "making plays". Get the ball in the hands of your playmakers and let them make plays.

Where is the "speed in space…

Where is the "speed in space" that was promised?

Joe Moorhead was the architect of the PSU offense when Gattis was there.

Clearly, Gattis doesn't have a grasp on the same concepts.

Some coaches have it and others don't.

Where is the creativity under Gattis?

Anyone can call the game plans we have.

Gattis has had plenty of time to recruit and shape the offense.

Don Brown was replaced.

Josh Gattis needs to be replaced.

I totally agree! Plus…

I totally agree! Plus recruiting is a huge part of success in college football. We're on prime time, the crowd is fired up, and we have an opportunity to wow recruits. Can we please be more creative!

Couldn't agree more! Where is the creativity?

If you’re a competitor, if…

If you’re a competitor, if you’re a winner, if you want to be great, there’s always something to play for!

In this particular case, you are also playing to lock in a 1 seed for the NCAA tournament.

Add to that you are playing a rival.  And if you were to win, and potentially beat your rival again in the Big 10 Tournament, odds are, they wouldn’t even be invited to the NCAA tournament.

Think about that, you have the opportunity to beat MSU 3 times in a row, and deliver a knockout punch!

You become the dominant program!

With all that on the line, you would think you would be so fired up, you could barely contain yourself!

We're still playing for a 1…

We're still playing for a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Every game matters.

I was really looking forward…

I was really looking forward to seeing Dylan McCaffrey play this year.  With his father's success in the NFL, and his brother's success as well, it leads one to believe that he would have a good understanding of the game. I don't know if it was Jim Harbaugh's or Josh Gattis' call to go with Joe Milton, but I wish they would have gone with McCaffrey.

I agree with you regarding…

I agree with you regarding the unforced errors.  Michigan is supposed to stand for excellence in the classroom and on the field.  Effort is necessary, but not sufficient.  We have to be smarter and more discipIined.

I feel sorry for the fans,…

I feel sorry for the fans, especially the alums.  We have a dilemma.  We want to support our school – and we have, but at what point does a situation become unacceptable?

Michigan blew a huge…

Michigan blew a huge opportunity today.  This was not a classic Alabama team.  We were running all over them in the first half.  Why we didn't stick with the running game in the second half is beyond me.

And the interception is…

And the interception is another example.  Eubanks wasn't going to be open, even if he didn't change his route at the last second.  Find the open receiver, run or throw it away.

Shea Patterson does so many…

Shea Patterson does so many little things that drive me crazy,  You are on the cusp of field goal range and you take a sack and put yourself out of range.  And it wasn't even third down.  if the play is not there - throw it away.

I can't even count how many times he is wide open for a run on the read option and it looks like he has just predetermined that he will hand it off.

Looking forward, I’m putting…

Looking forward, I’m putting my hope in how we have looked since the second half of the Penn State game until today.  The Michigan State and Notre Dame games were really enjoyable.  Not only did we win big, but it was fun to watch.  Even in the first half today, who really expected us to throw for 250 yards on OSU?   Sure, it took longer for the new offense to click, but the upside from this system change is worth it.  The old grind it out approach was not only ineffective against elite teams, but it wasn’t very fun to watch.  If we can continue to open things up on offense, and put up big numbers, it will also help us to attract more elite recruits.  Which will lead to even more success.

Regarding the defense, Don Brown generally responds well after a poor performance.  This is the first time his D has had back to back poor performances against the same team.  Part of this is coaching, part is talent, and part is execution.  Our D was relatively young this year.   If Don Brown comes back, and I hope he does, we will be better next year.

I believe the coaching staff takes these losses as hard as we do.  This has led to positive changes:  a new OC and offensive scheme, and new defensive adjustments, like zone and bracket coverage, which will also pay dividends over time.  It’s tough to have urgency and patience at the same time, but we need them both right now.

Really disappointed in all…

Really disappointed in all of the unforced errors today.

Yes!  I have been a fan…

Yes!  I have been a fan since 1969 and an alum since 1980.  For the most part,

from that time, until 2007, we dominated.  I believe we were 17-4, under Bo, against MSU.

They often played us tough, but we expected to win.  Our real rival was OSU.

The years under Rich Rod and Hoke were tough.  It gave me a better sense of empathy for

State.  If we had to endure decade upon decade of losing like they have, that would

have been brutal.

Each team should be allowed…

Each team should be allowed up to 2 challenges per game that prove to be incorrect.

Yes, please start McCaffrey…

Yes, please start McCaffrey moving forward!  Much better decision maker!

PLEASE start McCaffrey…

PLEASE start McCaffrey moving forward!!

Around 4 years ago, I…

Around 4 years ago, I eliminated the color green from my wardrobe.  I have a couple shirts that were given to me that have some red in them.  Could be time for a Salvation Army donation.

The goal, as Jim Harbaugh…

The goal, as Jim Harbaugh has stated, is to win every game.  When we do that, we win the B1G 10 and the National Championship.

I believe the coaches and players are doing everything they can to accomplish that.  It’s not progressing as quickly as we would like, but that’s still their goal.

OSU has built a juggernaut. …

OSU has built a juggernaut.  If we can compete with them and win, then we should be able to compete on a National Championship Level as well.  It’s not going to be easy.  Urban Meyer recruited at unprecedented OSU levels.  If we can pull an upset this year, that would be huge for shifting momentum.

I was really encouraged by our second half performance against Penn St.  We finally got to see a glimpse of what the new offense could be.  In spite of a lot of mistakes, we were really moving the ball.  It was fun to watch.  The defense played really well too.   I know certain play calls (offensively and defensively) triggered a WHAT ARE WE DOING??!! response, but we were controlling the second half.  Shea Patterson played much better and this is critical to our future success this season.

As I recall, the punter was…

As I recall, the punter was from Australia and didn't know that you could fall on the ball.

If I could add one player to…

If I could add one player to this team, it would definitely be Tom Brady.

QB is the biggest weakness on this team and Brady was excellent in college before he became the GOAT in the pros.

In 1999, he led Michigan to wins over Notre Dame, Purdue (with Drew Brees), Wisconsin, Penn St, Ohio St, and Alabama in the Orange Bowl (where he earned MVP).

He was a great leader and we really need leadership with this team.  We could run Harbaugh’s offense.  Gattis could coach the wide receivers.  Brady would be fantastic getting to the ball to our playmakers.

YES!

Let’s say…

YES!

Let’s say hypothetically that Josh Gattis was OSU’s OC last year, do you feel confident that his play design would have exposed Brandon Watson like Ryan Day was able to do?

I agree with you.  Shea…

I agree with you.  Shea clearly struggles with zone.  So what has to happen for him to be able to read a zone better?

Part of this is coaching:

What kind of drills does he need to do to improve?

Can we motion receivers more frequently to help him better identify zone pre-snap?

Can we run route combinations that flood zones?

Can we teach our receivers to find the seams in the zones?

So many of the game planning…

So many of the game planning, play calling and on field decisions are absolutely mind boggling.  How can a coach who was one play away from winning the Super Bowl be overseeing this?

That`s encouraging…

That`s encouraging information.   I don't feel like I can predict yet how good we can be until we see what type of offense and defense we run.

Seth just posted MGoRadio 5…

Seth just posted MGoRadio 5.3: At Least It's a Philosophy  Following is part of the write up regarding segment 1. Wisconsin After Review:  I highlighted certain words in bold so that a pattern can be seen.  Both the coaches and players need to be SMARTER.  That seems to be a bigger issue than anything else (i.e., not having enough "dogs"):  "...Seth can’t understand what happened to Shea. The throw to Ronnie Bell was a successfully stupid decision from Shea. Mason’s fumble was mostly dumb luck. What happened to speed in space? Bubble screens? Mike Sainristil? Giles Jackson? Why is Nick Eubanks being used as a slot receiver? Why did it take until being down 35-8 to start throwing deep balls to Collins and Black? Michigan refusing to pave the Wisconsin interior is stupid. It got so bad that the Patterson interception was a DL tip from a design rushing play. They’re running RPOs that Penn State used to do under Moorhead. This was the worst possible game plan for the second straight week. What did we do all offseason? Michigan consistently 3 years behind what the rest of the country is doing. There were repeated errors on both offense and defense that just don’t make any sense."

Regardless of which scheme,…

Regardless of which scheme, I would like to see an offensive (and defensive) approach that is INTELLIGENT.

At this risk of sounding arrogant, wouldn’t it be great if the identity of the University’s football team was similar to the identity of the University’s students?

There are other important qualities as well (toughness, etc), but we have to play SMART!  Be honest, isn’t that the number one thing that drives us crazy more than anything else?  If we’re not being smart?  This encompasses everything from preparation, practice, scouting, game planning, play calling, execution, recruiting, training and development…EVERYTHING!  We are supposed to be the Leaders and Best!  We’ve done quite well historically, and have done some things really well, at times, over the past few years, but we can do better.

I really hope Dylan…

I really hope Dylan McCaffrey is healthy and starts at QB for the Iowa game.  I remember watching his Dad play in the NFL (13 years and 3 Super Bowl championships) and his brother Christian play at Stanford (AP College Player of the Year and Heisman runner-up in 2015), so when I heard we were recruiting Dylan, I was curious to see what traits he might have in common with his Dad and brother.

I watched some of his HS game tape and was really impressed.  He looked like a natural leader.  He led Valor Christian to the 5A State Championship all three years he played QB, winning twice.  Here is a clip of the 2016 Championship Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t2g-STBZZM Watch how well he sees the field (by the way, notice the cameo appearance by Jim Harbaugh and Jedd Fisch at the 12:24 mark).

Obviously, this is high school and we’ve only seen glimpses of him in college, but it looks like he has the right instincts.  He’s tall (6’5’’), which helps his vision in the pocket.  He has a good arm, gets the ball out on time to the open receiver, and he’s mobile.

He's played fairly well for us in relief, but unfortunately keeps getting injured. He definitely needs to protect himself better when he runs.  I believe if he starts for us, he will get in a rhythm and will be the leader we have been looking for.

Thanks for putting this…

Thanks for putting this together Seth!  It's very informative and reinforces my belief in Don Brown.

I'm looking forward to an analysis of the offensive side of the ball.

Sadly, until our offense can…

Sadly, until our offense can learn how to create "Speed in Space",

we won't be much of a threat.

I'm excited about the future…

I'm excited about the future of Michigan Basketball with Juwan Howard leading the way.

Beyond his track record as a player and assistant coach, I really love his joy and enthusiasm.

He can be a great ambassador for Michigan.

Thanks for your post.  I…

Thanks for your post.  I love your passion for Michigan!

It’s funny, being the winningest program in college football history, I actually consider us to be more of the Yankees of college football, than the Red Sox.  The Yankees haven’t won a World Series championship in 10 years.  They, like us, have gone through a dry spell.  This might be their year to get back on top.

I know your main point wasn't that we were the Yankees or the Red Sox, but rather what it feels like to lose repeatedly to your archrival, with seemingly no end in sight, and to finally break through!

Right now there seems to be no end in sight, but we will be champions again.

Thanks for the excellent…

Thanks for the excellent analysis SC!
