Why is Michigan womens basketball playing today but mens basketball isn't?

Not just whining.

Genuinely confused.

What's the rationale?

i dont think they were ready especially facing illinois on the road whereas the women have an easier game and getting their 2nd leading scorer back... just my thought and i am ok with the decision...

No one will answer this question, but I think we all know why (playing the hottest team in the Big Ten on the road with very little practice). Illinois fans are hating us hard core for it. I love it.

Here's a fairly logical explanation. The Women's team already missed multiple games due to a COVID pause earlier in the season. The Women's team had a COVID pause in December which postponed two games. They also had a game against MSU postponed due to Sparty's own COVID pause. They have less time in which to make up more games when compared to the Men's team.

The Men's team has five total games to reschedule and make up. The Women's team has four more games (nine in total) to make up. Therefore, the Men's team has more flexibility to reschedule games. Also, something to keep in mind: if the BIG conference wasn't on board with Michigan and Illinois postponing tonight's game, those teams would absolutely be playing.

It's a legit question if you don't follow close.

The Women are playing Purdue (6-9) which is a confident tune-up to get back into the grind.

The Men were not that fortunate and were schedule to come back (without team activities) to play the #2 team in the B1G and 6th ranked team in the country. This has a high likelihood of effecting  conference standings as well as NCAA seeding.

Putting it on context, if it were Nebraska or maybe even NW, the men might have played the game...but I don't know that for sure.

I'm going to push back on the idea that the Men's team would have played the game if it was against the right opponent. This just does not seem likely to me. The plain and simple truth is that they have about 12 days to squeeze in five games. That is not an impossible task. It may require a 'back-to-back' or a 'two in three days', but those are much more doable and realistic when your team has been playing basketball consistently and everyone is in the right condition.

Coming out of a two week pause against any team would have been a dicey situation. However, if the Men's team had missed some games earlier in the year, like the Women's team had, then the Men would be playing tonight as well. But, the fact of the matter is that they have fewer games to make up, more time remaining in which to make them up, and a conference which is amicable to getting every team to play one another at least once with the ultimate goal being every team playing a 20 game conference schedule.

I think it's better that time is given to get the teams back in shape, although I'm surprised the women are playing again sooner... unless the men had actual covid issues.  It would be nice to get some clarity in it, but it won't matter by the time the season ends.

Just remember to send a big "thank you" to the health dept for this scenario - how thoughtful of them and completely data supported to shut down programs that had no direct covid exposure.

I have no inside info, this is all speculation. But, I notice that Illinois had a makeup game at Nebraska scheduled for Friday night to make up for the missed game with U-M today. My thought is, that game was put together when it was still unknown if Michigan would sit out two weeks or more. Nebraska, remember, has more games than anyone to make up. So maybe the planners figured it would be good to get that one in for Illinois and Nebraska, it might be their last chance. It would also give M more time to come back. I figure Michigan didn't argue to much. It would be less than ideal to have the first game back, with less than a week of practice, be against a top 5 opponent.

Everyone needs to take a step back and realize there are more puzzle pieces than just the maize and blue ones. Sometimes it's not true that because the women played this evening, it made sense for the Big Ten as a whole to have the men play tonight as well.

Of course, I could be totally wrong and there could be other reasons, and the Illinois-Nebraska game is just incidental. But, it's what I see as a reasonable possibility.

Good information/observation! To me, this seems to be the first time the Big 10 has made a schedule change during the season. I know Maryland played an out of conference opponent when their game against Nebraska was postponed, but I don't recall another Big 10 game being rescheduled yet. It will be interesting seeing how adept the conference is at trying to make up some of these games, or how creative they will be. With teams going to Indy for the conference tournament, would the conference think about forgoing a traditional tournament for the chance to make up lost regular season games? I'd love to see the Big 10, unlike what they did for football, be the leader in coming up with a creative solution to lost games.
