OT-Golf Thu: What's in Your Bag?

Submitted by Gameboy on May 13th, 2021 at 9:40 AM

What is the weapon of your choice? Did you get something new? Do you have some good luck charm you carry? Your all time favorite club?

When I was playing a lot, I liked to buy a club or two every year since I just like trying out new stuff, but since I don't play as much anymore, my bag has been steady for the past few years. However, I did splurge for my birthday and got the new Ping G425 driver and it definitely is the most forgiving driver I have hit. It is a fantastic club.

Here is my set:

  • Driver: Ping G425 Max, 10.5, Tensei AV Orange stiff shaft
  • 3 wood: Taylor Made R15, Fujikura Speeder stiff
  • 3 hybrid: Taylor Made R15 22', Fujikura Speeder stiff
  • 4-PW irons: Mizuno MP-4H, True Temper Dynamic Gold S300
  • 52', 56', 60' wedges: Cleveland RTX 2.0 CB Black, Cleveland stiff shaft
  • Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2

I carry Sun Mountain Three bag with 14 way dividers. I really like the dividers since I know exactly where my clubs are (or which one I just left in the last hole) at all times.

I am class of 1975, so you can figure out my age.

Last year I stopped playing with my Mizuno MX23 irons as they have stiff shafts and the sweet spot is too small and unforgiving.

I'm too cheap to buy new clubs so I'm playing my old Ping Eye irons from the early 1980s.  At least they have bigger sweet spots but they also have stiff shafts.  I am using a hybrid 4 and 5.  I only play once a week and am having trouble getting around so I am reluctant to drop $1K on new clubs, even though I should.  If I win the LOTTO I'm heading right to Miles of Golf for a fitting and new clubs.

I still score around 90-100. I usually play the M course from the white tees and love it, except for the bunkers which currently are a mess.  Why not let each group go out with 1 rake?

One thing that folks should realize too with used club purchases... a lot of the sets you can get used nowadays are literally 1 yr or less old. The turnaround on high end clubs is insanely short because folks who have the cash to drop on new clubs are doing it at a rapid rate. So when a lot of the board folks say "used", think more like last year's model with maybe 20 rounds on them.

Would definitely concur with those who advised on getting fitted.  As a taller individual (6'4") it was the best thing I ever did for my golf game.  My irons are either +1" or +1.5" and I played a few rounds with rentals when traveling (didn't make sense to bring clubs for only one round) and man it makes a huge difference.  Takes about half the round to get used to shorter clubs and totally throws the swing/game off.

I have my regular bag, which is routinely updated.  I also have the lakehouse bag, which is a melange of clubs from yesteryear stored in the garage at the family compound for anyone to use when visiting  The irons in that bag, Titleist 981 DCI, are 23 years old--and are still the best irons I have ever played.  Both my brother and I have shot lifetime top-10 rounds in the last year using these irons, and we are both well past our prime.  I hope all the MGoGolfers eventually find their "forever clubs"!

I dusted off the old clubs last Fall-after being very dormant for about 20 years. The purpose was to both get an 11 year old grandson outdoors and active and to get some exercise myself. And, my wife is playing for the first time-and loving the game.

I'm 68 years of age and 5'2". I am a joyful hacker-have never taken a lesson. I hit enough good shots to keep me believing that the next one will also be a good one. I play boogey golf-call it my par...play from 5 over to 5 under. I average about 200 off the tee. I, pretty much, only use four clubs-my driver, 3-wood, sand-wedge and putter. (Yeah, yeah, yeah...I should get some lessons and figure out how to hit the irons.) I can putt :)  Yesterday I made 3 or 4 in the 25 foot range and made some very serious runs at a couple 75 to 100 footers...it's makes me smile and makes my friends' shake their heads-but they can hit their irons.  Yesterday was an "85" day...today was a "90" day-left a couple inches short.

I am a high handicapper (21) but I live a full Golf Life.   A former "jock" that at 44 realizes most other sports are over, and I maybe able to play golf for a long time yet.

Just got back from Pilgrim's Run.   Shot a 94 from the blue/white hybrid tees.

My bag:   Cobra Speedzone woods.   Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood.  I did happen to hit a 270 yard 3-wood tonight on a hole where the driver can get too long.  The 3 wood almost went too long.

Cobra Baffler irons, 4 through Gap.   Had them about 3 years and they are overdue for new grips, but I'm pretty happy with my equipment.   Sand wedge and a real plain Cobra blade putter.

Even in my day to day real estate life, I walk around the world looking like I have signed a lucrative endorsement contract with Ogio and Greg Norman.   Go from a meeting to the course.

I wish I were better, but I enjoy the shit out of all of it.

Next Thursday/Friday I play St Ives and Tullymore.

TaylorMade M4 driver

TaylorMade M4 Irons 6 thru 9

Cleveland CBX2 46*, 50*, 56*

Wilson 60*

Snakeyes putter

I will update the Wilson 60* soon and should probably get a better putter.  I have spent a bunch on golf lately so it will be awhile before I get new any new clubs.  Interested in the SIM 2 Max D also, but dont know enough about it to drop that much money.
