Obligatory Director's Cup update, but it's not great

Submitted by rposly on April 6th, 2023 at 10:33 AM

I don't really want to post this, but I feel like it's expected of me at this point.  First Winter Director's Cup update was released, and unfortunately it's not great.  Ohio State is in the lead by a wide margin, and Michigan is all the way down at #19.  I think we all know this is going to be a down year in these standings, what with the state of basketball and some other underwhelming finishes, but I didn't expect to see the enemy at the top.  Gross.

Im confused.  All i see are posts of how Michigans sports teams are killing it and getting to or winning championships.  I would have expected Michigan to be at or near the top.

Yeah unfortunately I didn’t think Michigan would do well in the Director’s cup standings but OSU being in the lead sucks. For the 2021-22 academic year football made the playoffs and women’s basketball, men’s basketball, hockey, softball, and baseball all made the NCAA Tournament.

Probably just me, but I find it hard to care about this.  If we were way down the list, it would be a sign of a problem in the athletic department.  The year to year fluctuations at the top don't interest me.

I'll always upvote a Fuck Ohio meme.

Now an admission: I feel like a real goddamn idiot that I can't figure this one out. Is it calling Ohio a bunch of fuck-ups (middle finger pointing to UP, hence Fuck UP)?

I feel your pain, Blue@LSU. Many a joke or meme has had a similar effect on me.

It honestly never occurred to me that this might mean anything other than the collective state of Michigan just giving Ohio the bird.  I just imagine the state being this hobbit, staring directly at Ohio, and mouthing the words "Hey, Ohio"

I don't know if this will be well received...but I'd gladly keep it this way if it meant football and hockey got to keep being top 4 teams

I'm mostly with you. it's great to win at other things, but i care most of all for football. And most of the country cares for football or basketball. So if we're in top 4 for one, everything else is just gravy.

I'd say M softball is prolly my second favorite sports team - and even them, when I feel the stress level going up, I calm myself down. I can only put that much care into one team, so it's football.

This thing is Stanford's to lose every year, and honestly, even if OSU wins....so what?

I don't work for the Athletic Department, but I personally find it hard to care about this thing, anyway.

Trivia: OSU is special in synchronized swimming.

A few years back a family friend planned to do that at the college level. Where, I asked? Most likely at at a place where it's a club sport, she said, and cited OSU as the premier program. Apparently few places have a varsity squad like OSU.

To be fair, we never do all that well in the first winter update considering we don’t field half of the sports they draw from. Basketball not making the tournament and going on their usual Sweet 16 run obviously hurts also.

That’s not how it works. You miss the tournament, you get 0 points. Michigan and OSU both scored 0 for basketball.

However, OSU has more first half winter sports than Michigan does. Meaning more opportunities to score. 165 points came from fencing and women’s hockey, which Michigan doesn’t sponsor. Those extra opportunities to rack up points make that basketball score hurt less.

So Michigan having less opportunity to earn points, actually means the basketball score hurts Michigan significantly more than it does OSU.

The only good thing about this, is despite the lead it's very unlikely Ohio wins this. Baseball is a mandatory sport for Director's Cup (as is men's basketball) and the fact they qualified for neither tournament will kill them come spring as they cannot drop those scores.

*Technically they could qualify for baseball, but they won't.
