Better late than never, but this strikes me as a cock up--am I missing something? I recognize that moving a large institution in that direction under current circumstances is a fraught venture; I accept that the Omicron has moved fast. But hasn't it been clear for some time that everyone needed to get boosted? Anxious for evidence that this has been handled expeditiously by my/our university.
December 22nd, 2021 at 9:32 AM ^
Well I assume they’ve been having practices as well as normal end of semester projects/studying for finals and when I got my booster I was out with a fever and aches for about 12-24 hours after my shot so my guess is that in order to prevent the immune response to the booster from sidelining them they waited til finals were over and they were going to not be practicing for a few days due to Christmas. But then again peak immunity post booster is two weeks later . . . At least immunity starts going up again after a few days.
December 21st, 2021 at 10:48 PM ^
That is a very smart idea
December 21st, 2021 at 10:52 PM ^
A couple of weeks ago would have been a smart idea. Now it is more, better late than never.
December 21st, 2021 at 11:09 PM ^
It would have been great a week or two ago but NYE is still 1.5 weeks away. The boosters aren't for nothing at this point.
December 22nd, 2021 at 3:32 AM ^
It's 9 days away if they're getting them Wednesday. It's supposed to take 14 days for the full effect right? Even if that's a conservative effort and it takes let's say 7 days, it's only going to protect them for two days before the game. Def should have done it two weeks ago. But yeah, better late than never I guess.
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:44 AM ^
14 days is for your first doses. Limited research was showing the booster takes effect quicker since your body has already been introduced to the vaccine.
Also, Theres no switch that gets flipped where you’re not protected and all of a sudden protected. “It’s only going to protect them two days before the game” isnt entirely accurate. While not reaching its full effectiveness, it becomes gradually more and more effective.
December 22nd, 2021 at 9:32 AM ^
Agreed. This just boosts their immunity.
"We found that seven to 13 days after the booster shot, there is a 48–68% reduction in the odds of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection," the Maccabi Healthcare Services researchers shared. Dr. Gohil indicates that most healthcare providers in the U.S. have been sharing similar figures with their patients. "Boosting should result in antibody production within days of the booster vaccine, but peak levels still occur around the two-week mark, similar to initial vaccines."
The sooner the better, but they should see a significant boost in immunity over the next week.

The good thing too is the boosters work immediately. There isn’t a waiting period like with the initial shots
December 21st, 2021 at 11:26 PM ^
Is this true? I thought it was still two weeks for full effect.
edit: unclear. glad the team is doing this.
December 21st, 2021 at 11:28 PM ^
Yeah, this is news to me too. That said, all the shots provide some initial protection — it’s not like at two weeks a switch is turned on. In any case, it’s better now than later.
December 21st, 2021 at 11:44 PM ^
Studies suggest there is already a significant boost to immunity by about the one week mark, though peak effectiveness is probably reached at closer to two weeks.
(Even after reaching peak effectiveness, some are still going to get infected with omicron. It's a tough bugger.)

I got mine 2.5 weeks before the Big Ten Championship game ... and then got COVID at the Big Ten Championship game. It was a bummer. Literally the only crowd I've been in since everything started.
December 22nd, 2021 at 5:23 AM ^
Yeah I was 5 weeks post vax and caught delta in Miami this summer. Even wore an N95 at work and a surgical mask everywhere else. I figure the virus came in the hotel’s ventilation system with all the weed I was inhaling while sleeping.
December 22nd, 2021 at 9:24 AM ^
We traveled with my daughter last summer for soccer, and it was. . . chronic, one in every two or three hotels we stayed in.
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:32 AM ^
Everyone keeps saying they should have gotten boosters earlier. The vax booster guidelines have not changed. You need to have 6 months pass since your last shot/dose.
According to the AD, mentioned in the News and Freep article, some have already received their booster and now the rest are now just becoming eligible for the booster? If they did a mass vaccination of the players at the time of spring/summer workouts and camp the timeline works out.
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:46 AM ^
I guess if they waited til mid June to get their last shot, but that also seems pretty late to the party. Vaccines were very widely available much earlier (e.g. it was not that hard to get an appointment in April).
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:57 AM ^
While I don't disagree with what you are saying we have no way to know that some players didn't get vaxxed on their own......to accuse the AD of not being proactive enough seems unfair.
Test negative and stay positive. GO BLUE!
December 22nd, 2021 at 9:12 AM ^
I am more questioning those who are praising this like it is such a smart move. Nothing about having the need for a mass vaccination event at this point screams out leaders and best. Seems like the week after the Iowa game would have been ideal. Minimize impact on practice while also ensuring full vaccination strength for seeing family on the holidays and leading into the game.

This quote from Chris Hinton is my favorite in the article and kind of dovetails with a point on sacrifice that I was trying to make in the other thread about JT Daniels testing positive. He summarizes it much better than I did.
"My parents always told me when I was young, when you want something that's different, you have to make sacrifices," defensive tackle Christopher Hinton said. "As a team, we're in a position that only four teams in the country are in, and we have to make sacrifices. That's do something different on the weekend, wear a mask around the building.
"So, we for sure have to be cautious about COVID, with it being on the rise, so we have everybody strong for Dec. 31, New Year's Eve."

You'd have to place a call to Bolivia.
December 21st, 2021 at 10:59 PM ^
I mean, you could try to call, but you would hear: "We're sorry. Your international call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and dial again."
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:06 AM ^
So instead of just flying him to Bolivia, you ex'ed him out of life?
Daaammmmnnnnn... The Blog is serious about shit...

Proof once again that Michigan Athletics has the best boosters!
December 21st, 2021 at 11:06 PM ^
So smart.
This virus could truly be the difference between a win and a loss.
Also, smart to get it before Christmas, just in case it puts a few guys down for a day or so.
Take it, enjoy family in a safe manner, and get back...ready for the best week of practice you've ever had in your life.

Michigan believes in science, Georgia, well, Georgia ain’t no Georgia Tech.
December 21st, 2021 at 11:39 PM ^
Oh no! Now Georgia will be able to hack into their microchips!!!

December 22nd, 2021 at 2:49 AM ^
Crazy that you even thought about adding the /s and still felt the need..damn
December 22nd, 2021 at 9:27 AM ^
Yeah it's crazy because nobody actually believes this. (Yes I know I'll be told I'm wrong and blah blah ?)
December 22nd, 2021 at 8:08 AM ^
No worries, the 5G thing will take care of it all... I do worry about the space lasers, though.

God bless our Wolverines. Go Blue!

My booster was rough for a few days. Hated it. Prior shots were meh.
December 22nd, 2021 at 1:40 AM ^
The booster put me down for about 12 hours.
Felt like absolute shit for those 12 hours but after that I was good to go.
December 22nd, 2021 at 11:20 AM ^
Likewise, about 12 hours or so. But good to go after that. Better the after effects of the booster than that damn Covid.without the vaccine
December 22nd, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
Fortunately I had zero issues after my booster. My arm was barely sore at all. It went even better than the previous two shots, which just resulted in arm soreness for a few days.
December 22nd, 2021 at 12:18 AM ^
LFG. Everyone get the booster ASAP, love to see the team doing this.
December 22nd, 2021 at 12:28 AM ^
United as a team.

The Leaders and The Best
I love it. Putting aside all the bullshit, following the science, and doing something to help everyone on the team.
These men are going to win a National Championship.
December 22nd, 2021 at 2:05 AM ^
Hope this helps defend them from omicron virus!
December 22nd, 2021 at 2:08 AM ^
Great idea! The other benefit is that if any guys miss curfew Harbaugh can just activate the microchip tracking devices to locate them immediately. s/
December 22nd, 2021 at 4:35 AM ^
Hopefully the players don't feel achey for a few days like I did after mine. Seems like a team booster should have been in the works awhile back.

December 22nd, 2021 at 9:57 AM ^
Great news! Wished they would have done this right after the Big 10 Championship just incase any players had side effects.
