Lewerke did not go through concussion protocol
https://mobile.twitter.com/chrissolari/status/1194297194276216832
Well that’s interesting. I guess we know he is playing this weekend. Kind of seems like something they should’ve checked out though, no?
November 12th, 2019 at 1:06 PM ^
This is incorrect.
Concussion protocol refers to the entire set of procedures and guidelines pertaining to concussions, including initial diagnosis steps.
Dantonio also didn't say he's not currently in concussion protocol. He said he didn't go through protocol, which to me means he was never properly evaluated.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:11 PM ^
That's more what I would have thought is the case. Maybe Dantonio is confused about what the "protocol" refers to.
Just to be clear, I obviously hate Dantonio but I'm willing to believe Solari's tweet is not accurately presenting the information.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
I agree that the concussion protocol refers to the entire procedures, including the evaluation. However, when fans/media refer to the protocol colloquially, they've almost always separated the two between evaluation (unknown) and protocol (concussed). So, despite us not liking Dantonio, I think it's at least possible he's referring to the latter.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:54 PM ^
I guess I can't speak for anyone else, but to me "in concussion protocol" starts the moment you come off the field and ends when you're ready to play.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:10 PM ^
Okay. So best case scenario, Dantonio is saying he was examined on the sideline by trainers during the game and determined to not have a concussion. And Solari had an in-artful tweet.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:03 PM ^
Here is NCAA Bylaw 3.2.4.20(b):
An active member institution shall have a concussion management plan for its student-athletes. The plan shall include, but is not limited to, a process that ensures a student-athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion shall be removed from athletics activities (e.g., competition, practice, conditioning sessions) and evaluated by a medical staff member (e.g., sports medicine staff, team physician) with experience in the evaluation and management of concussions;
So the concussion protocol is the required evaluation by a medical staff member of any athlete who "exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion." It doesn't matter if he had a concussion or not, if you get hit in the head and appear not to be oriented immediately afterward, that is a sign consistent with a concussion and you must be evaluated, by NCAA Bylaw.
November 12th, 2019 at 12:57 PM ^
How are you supposed to determine if someone had a concussion without getting them checked out by the trainers?
November 12th, 2019 at 12:59 PM ^
There is no hard evidence Lewerke sustained a concussion because he was never examined for one.
It's the Sparty way.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:01 PM ^
Does the NCAA have an independent doctor or neurologist at each game, similar to the NFL, that is responsible for flagging and evaluating potential concussions on the sideline?
November 12th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
There are different grades of concussions you know
November 12th, 2019 at 1:10 PM ^
He took a linebacker's knee to the head at full speed, took forever to get up, threw a terrible interception the very next play, and said his head was ringing for a while. There was plenty of evidence to warrant a full concussion examination.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
If he was slow to get up after the contact... and described a feeling of his head "ringing".. does that not bring up the need for more thorough evaluation other than just asking if he's OK?
Kids will say "I'm OK Coach" which is why there are procedures.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:15 PM ^
That's why you go through the protocol, dumbass.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:25 PM ^
How assinine can you be? You don’t KNOW whether someone had suffered a concussion UNTIL they go through the fucking protocol!
November 12th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
Your comment is stupid and you should feel bad about it. Seriously, epic stupid.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:06 PM ^
Koala stoopid?
November 12th, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
Not sure I'd go that far, but possibly yes, Koala stupid.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:58 PM ^
This is truly one of the most moronic comments comments on here in a LONG time!!!
November 12th, 2019 at 12:48 PM ^
Shocker, morally bankrupt program continues to be morally questionable
November 12th, 2019 at 12:50 PM ^
Did he have a probable mild concussion?
November 12th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
It's honestly shocking for a coach in 2019 to say something like that. I hope this gets some media attention and he gets roasted for it, but I kinda doubt it.
November 12th, 2019 at 12:55 PM ^
He won't get roasted nationally, simply for the fact that nationally nobody gives a damn about MSU's football program. Though you are right in a perfect world he would get roasted just like Hoke got roasted for the Shane Morris situation both locally and nationally.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:09 PM ^
This is true... nobody cares about them...... newsworthy nationwide is when M is down, more than when MSU does anything.... irrelevant... back to mediocrity they go....
November 15th, 2019 at 12:35 PM ^
I mean, he is still living in the past, so it's understandable...
November 12th, 2019 at 12:55 PM ^
This doesn’t surprise me at all. In fact I expect it. They circle the wagons for sexual assault and rape. You think they’re gonna do the right thing over a concussion?
November 12th, 2019 at 12:57 PM ^
This seems so crazy on the face of it. If a player is clearly woozy and struggling to stand then you check him out! If he's fine the it only costs you a few minutes, it's not a permanent ban like a red lock.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
Spartans Will....... I need your supervisor.... Pride comes before the fall....
November 12th, 2019 at 1:19 PM ^
Would've been fired ASAP from any youth, middle school, or high school program worth a damn.
If a kid's woozy, he sits. Period.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:19 PM ^
To those clamoring for some sort of consequence for Dantonio in "neglecting safety of a human being for a game" - I'll have you know that Bill Beekman has already issued a press release stating that he made Dantonio call his mother and that he will be red locked until the next practice starts.
What more do you guys want - do you want him to get a littering fine too?
November 12th, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
Woah woah woah.
Maybe Mork misspoke. I think you can say a lot of things about Mork D’onterno and MSU but questioning their integrity is certainly not one of them.
/s
November 12th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Maybe Mork is going to send a QB that everyone knows got concussed out there in hopes that we won’t hit him too hard. It certainly wouldn’t be the sleaziest thing the MSU sports program has done.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
I don’t have fucks left to give about MSU. If Lewerke voluntarily wants to put his health at risk for a coach and university that clearly doesn’t give a shit about their students or student athletes, that’s his and his family’s decision. Good luck practicing with a concussed qb all week.
November 12th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
Unless the concussion leaves him unable to make a cogent decision.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
MSU would go to the ends of the earth to NOT dig any deeper. They'd rather just take people at their word and call it good. What a shit hole.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:38 PM ^
Yeah, no shit. If he was evaluated he wouldn't have gone back in the Illinois game and probably wouldn't be playing this week.
Edit to add: Also, I think his name should be Mork Dontaskdonttellio for the remainder of the week.
November 12th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
How is this even possible? Aren't there legal requirements now?
November 12th, 2019 at 2:00 PM ^
shocker! <eye roll>
November 12th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
Dantonio is a depressed and defeated guy. His skin must be crawling with a desire to get out of there. Unlike the guys who are popping bponers, I'm thinking this one grows painful to look at by the second quarter.
EDIT: Wonder if this provides upper admin a pretext to get rid of him. Oh wait, he hired them.
November 12th, 2019 at 3:09 PM ^
This isn't the first time a few years ago one of their defensive lineman , I don't remember if it was Gholston or the other defensive end around the same time wobbled to the sidelines disappeared into the group of players. When they asked Dantonio afterwards Dantonio said it's not his job to do a medical evaluation they have people who do that. The reporter ask did anyone check him out Dantonio responded I don't know again it's not my job I'm assuming they did. And the kid came out and played the next series I don't know why the Media cuts dantonio slack, the guy is a world-class ass.
He throws a fit over a player sticking stake in their field and disrespecting their home when his own team tried to stick the flag in the center of the field at Notre Dame but missed by 10 yards and planted it on the 40. Or how he didn't Shake Harbaugh's hand after the fumbled punt snap said he got caught up in a motion or how he taunted the Michigan crowd asking where are all the Wolverines at the list goes on and on with this ass hat
November 12th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
Not sure if it is real, but a Spartan poster is saying on RCMB that Lewerke had another incident like this last year and so did Cook where they went back in with apparent concussions. At least as of now, nobody has challenged the poster on the accuracy of this.
November 12th, 2019 at 4:08 PM ^
Isn’t this a medical decision... (remembers MSU Medical staff). Maybe Dantonio should make the call.
November 12th, 2019 at 4:24 PM ^
Lewerke:
"Doc, I don't understand why I need to get naked for concussion protocol?"
Doc:
"It's just how we do things here."
November 12th, 2019 at 4:41 PM ^
You know, I believe it was Seybert who was trying to get the medical staff out there on Lewerke's behalf. I can't even imagine how that looks to a locker room, that they showed that little concern for a player's condition.
November 12th, 2019 at 5:15 PM ^
“I’m fine,” Lewerke said after the game. “My head was ringing for a little bit, but it wasn’t anything serious I don’t think. It was a tough hit and it definitely rung my bell for a little bit, but I think I was fine.”
Got your bell rung. Huh, I wonder what that might be....
