Have we hit peak Michigan fandom?

Submitted by iawolve on November 17th, 2023 at 5:39 PM

I don’t know another fan base that could be subjected to such an amazing cluster f*ck of events in a potential championship year that has a low level staffer spinning a nationwide drama resulting in our coach being suspended from the 3 biggest regular season games, our LB coach/top recruiter being booted, and us rolling over immediately after we FINALLY unified as a group and steeled for the fight. It only proved how little we understand the “game” when we get maximal damage with minimal gain from skirting the edge of the rules. Feeling like this is BPONE 2.0 since I really don’t understand what in the hell just happened here, i assume SEC teams are just sitting back, chuckling, saying “amateurs”. I just hope the team is more focused and clear-eyed than the rest of us. Run it out boys.

The original scandal was kinda crap - much like tattoo gate, except embellished by media types who breathlessly reported biased opponent opinions without any critical thought to it. Then it came out there was a coverup, which is always worse than the crime - also what happened with tattoo gate. How we got punished was crap, but the punishment now does fit the crime. It's such a meh scandal - a booster made illegal payments, an assistant was guilty of covering it up - that is only a big story because of a) how good we are b) how hoity toity the "Michigan man" thing is c) conor stalions is kind of a hilarious character d) Pete Thamel covered it as "OMG CHEATING!" and was believed by Tony Pettitti.

We made mistakes, trolls will never give up on their narrative but its been proven mostly wrong, let's take our medicine and move on. If we win out most of the media will move on. If we beat OSU it'll be sweet no matter what. Tony Pettitti was still a jerk but whatever, nobody really cares about that anymore.

I enrolled and became a fan in 2001. College football brings 1 part joy and 9 parts anxiety or pain. This team is so close to all its goals. In terms of BPONE, this is barely on the radar.

Your emotions and feelings are valid. Please do try to balance them with the good that the team has brought us as well. We are 10 - 0. We have a very good shot at being 12 - 0.

And I don’t care.

This is a Patriots deflategate level scandal. Lots of pounding the table over a minor infraction at best.

Do Pats fans or Brady fans care? Fuck no. It still says they’re champions. Let the haters scream “cheaters” all they want, the excuse rings hallow now if Michigan somehow manages to pull it off anyway despite all this turmoil. “OMG I have the vapors because we gotta change signs that anyone can see in public!!!” Please.

In November 2008 I would have given you my left testicle for Michigan football November 2023.

This has been bad, but we’ve seen worse. And, happily, I got to keep my balls.

Thank you.  I’m glad you weren’t castrated as well.

I refer to this as the airline middle seat problem.   People bitch about having to sit in a middle seat on a cross-country flight and pay too much for unappetizing airline food.  But a couple generations earlier they’d have to drive across the country in a 1957 Edsel with no air conditioning that had an annoying and dangerous tendency to pull to the left.  You’re not really thinking about the upgrade from the Edsel experience when the guy next to you hogs the arm rest.

Is this situation frustrating and disappointing?  Of course.  But this team seems to be at the precipice of something really special.  I’m not letting our detractors and the haters and the pessimists blind me to the promise of this moment.  Go Blue.

Have you all noticed that the board has been overrun by the same emotional children as the gameday threads?  Every single U-M happening is cause for verbal diarrhea. Because, what, you can't lord your Michigan fandom over others?  Why do you care at all what other people think?  Jfc, if Michigan wins the B10 or the national championship, you should be happy because these coaches and players worked hard and that gives you joy. Who cares if a bunch of strangers call the team "cheaters"?  Are you this pathetic you need the validation of strangers? This entire "scandal" is nothing and now we are caught up in who knew what when. Who cares!  Grow up.

I'm not sure I agree with your comments. We've always taken some form of abuse from the Michigan haters. Especially those from east lansing, and of course, south of the border. That's nothing new. We've been the brunt of the verbal diarrhea for years.

What's different here is, I think, we refused to accept any of the derogatory narratives circulating throughout the media. All of the university stood up, ready to fight these charges. The fanbase stood united in support of the program. We believed this was all caused by outsiders, the haters, the naysayers, the unscrupulous media. Then.....the truth surfaced.

And now we all realize that we were wrong. It's hard to accept or understand. With the teams we've had the last three years, IT WASN'T NECESSARY.

I support the Michigan Wolverines, and I always will.

Our football players believe they have a championship team… let’s support their hard work and stop this BS.  Eye on the prize.  And yeah, spike the trophy when petite gives it to Jim.  (They’ll make another, or hell… it’d look awesome in the trophy case broken as is)

I feel like the B1G threatened a championship game ban if this played out in court today.  I know there has been some bad news today but if that was a possibility I can’t blame them for backing down. You have to do what you can to preserve the teams chance at the playoffs. They have a week to prepare for OSU and if they win they I feel like this will all calm down.

This is not going to go well for you, but I suppose this is as good a place as any for me to throw this in. The strongest feeling I have about all of this is a giant sense of WTF.

Anyway, this is different than BPONE for me. Because as a team, we are the best we've been in a long, long time. No, it's something different, maybe just an overwhelming sense of frustration at the whole mess. Frustration at the Big Ten, at the NCAA, but also at what we've apparently done.

So fuck it, I'm going to focus on and support the players and hopefully all the noise stays in the background so we can keep winning.

Because we still have a chance to do something fantastic.

I think we should watch out for hypocrisy. UM clearly broke some rules so let’s honor this. But you sure as hell better be consistent. All I’m asking. We have something to tell you guys (B1G) - my approach to them

I don’t know why but I take solace in knowing that 80% of our fan base probably has no clue that a coach was even fired yesterday.

the majority of any fanbase is casual and not as depressed as this board. Take a breath, we’ll be fine 😂
