Happy Father's Day

Submitted by Wendyk5 on June 18th, 2023 at 9:59 AM

Hope all the dads out there have a great Father's Day. My husband is working today (Cubs security so if you're going to the game, don't give him any trouble!) and then we're having dinner with our son at my husband's tavern of choice. What have you all got going today?

We're probably just going to have a quiet lunch and a nice dinner later.

Father's Day is a complex day for me - my own confidence in being a father is something I still question, even though I am sure, based on how my kids appear to have turned out, that I've done things right here and there. My own father is now quite deep into Parkinson's and has rapidly worsening dementia, even to where he now has trouble remembering that he is in fact a father. The day has become a reminder to me of how precious time can be.

My Mom suffered with Parkinson's dementia for several years preceding her death in 2018.  She also had macular degeneration and could not see.  This heightened her hallucinations.  I was lucky that she invested in a local highly regarded lifetime care facility.  I was able to visit her almost every day as the facility was 6 miles from my work.

Good luck with your Dad.  Happy Father's Day to both of you!

My mom had Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. While she was still mostly with us, she thought that double whammy was unfair.

It takes a toll, on the person and on those who care for them. When she didn't know us anymore, I'm grateful that my dad, sister, and brother did their best that she at least felt loved and safe.

I raised my kids while questioning my ability to do a good job the entire way through. My parents weren't great role models and so parenting wasn't intuitive for me the way it might be for people with solid parents. I think if you're aware of this, you're bound to be thoughtful and do right by your kids. My kids are now young adults and while there are some parenting moments I'd like to have back, I did pretty well considering. But not without a lot of hand-wringing and anxiety.

Both my children are “back home” this weekend.

Last night, we had a great dinner to celebrate our best friend’s daughter turning a year older - and ended the evening with cigars for “the boys” - perfect evening conditions - comfortably cool and a great setting.

Today, my in-laws will come over for an early dinner - I’ll be manning the grill - and, the tele will be on mute as we watch the final round of the US Open.

Happy Father’s Day wishes to one and all…

Go Blue!

Going to my girls soccer game. First year playing in select soccer so long road ahead of us if they stick with it. Then, heading to Cama beach (near Seattle) for a cabin trip with family friends.

I decided the Mississippi pot roast sliders are for dinner tonight, and the smoker is already working.  Can see the thin blue smoke from where I sit, and it looks like heat shimmering away...  Not doing much today, need to clean out the duck pond filter (if you ever decide to keep ducks, make sure you have running water available and don't go for the static pond!).  My dad passed several years back, and my kid is 12 - so all he wants to do is play games on his ipad and watch the Gaming Beaver on YT (WTF?).

Methinks the hammock will be tested this afternoon...  Happy Father's Day to all the MGoDads!

Parents' cottage is a construction zone, but there's a grill, a lake, a couple paddle boards, and a porta-potty, so we're going to have ourselves a picnic and grill up some skirt steaks while hanging out on the freshly poured basement slab. Knowing my dad, he'll probably spend all afternoon scooping weeds out of the water or double-checking measurements against blueprints and love every second of it.

On our way out the door for a fancy brunch, but honestly, I'd be happy with Kraft macaroni and cheese and sliced up hot dogs, followed by a marathon UNO session with the family.

Happy Fathers day to you guys.  I wonder what gift Ryan Day gave Jim this morning?  I heard he has a boat load of gold pants sitting around.

The family is taking me out for a steak and I'll kick back by the pool and enjoy the rest of the day.

Flying back from a long weekend at Cape Cod. Was time away from our kids that my wife and I badly needed, but it’s always nice to be coming home. Haven’t seen our dogs in nearly a week so I’m really excited to see them waiting for us at our back door.

We have been travelling a lot. A couple weeks in Switzerland then back home for a ten days then off to Rocky Mountain National Park early this week for our annual camping "Grandcation" with our 2 grandsons-back home Friday night. A lot of laundry to do and gear to put away. Walked 9 holes yesterday...will play at least nine late afternoon after the LPGA is completed.

Thanks, Wendy!

My Army buddy used to work security at Reds games. (It happened to be the day that the commissioner allowed Pete Rose back on the field, though he wasn't allowed to speak to the crowd." The fans were excited.)

Let's play two!

EDIT: My Father's Day is sweet. FaceTime with a son, daughter in law and grandson (!) in Chicago; a call from other son in London; phone call with my 98-year old dad.

Dated a girl back when I lived in Cinci who was the secretary for the guy who ran Riverfront stadium events. She got hired specifically because she knew nothing about the players or was looking to date them.

She had me meet her for lunch one day and her desk was right outside the elevators for the Admin offices of the Reds and as I stood there Pete Rose, Marge Schott, Schotzy I and GM Bill Bergesh came down the hall to get on the elevator and got introduced and shook their hands. This was right after he got the hit and was still player/ Manager, I believe. Pre knowledge of gambling.

Had 2 tickets through her for all home games right behind home plate with the players wives and GF's. Pretty cool.

We are driving from Chicagoland to South Haven, renting a big house for 5 nights with my wife's immediate family (9 adults and 6 kids, 2 of which are mine).

Going to be a little crazy, but should be very fun!

I celebrated by oversleeping.  Then I drank a big mug of expensive tea and sent stupid jokes to my friend in Colorado after he sent me photos of his new ridiculous propane griddle.

I'll be working on a tri-tip for dinner.

Working on making dinner for my elderly Dad and Mom: ribs, homemade bread, roasted potato wedges, oven-roasted green beans. Making it all at home and taking it to their condo to finish. Whiling away much of a Sunday in the kitchen is my idea of a good time! Spent an hour on the phone with child #1 while the bread was rising, and expect a call from child #2 at any time now.

My wife is working.  My daughter is 1220 miles to the Northeast and my son is 2700 miles to the Northwest of me.  Severe thunderstorms in the area.

I have just completed the last of 80 hours of CPE to maintain my active CPA license.

OG boring!

My best to all MGoFathers!

My father passed away earlier this year.  We were never really close in a Leave it to Beaver kind of way and we had our moments when we didn't see eye to eye, but like that character in City Slickers talking about how he and his father could always relate to each other over baseball, my Dad and I loved watching Michigan football together.  Now that he's gone, I miss him more than I ever thought I would.

Cherish today and every day.  It'll be gone soon.  Go Blue!

My bride of 37 years took me to the final round of the LPGA Meijer Classic in GR (Rockford). Great day - dads in for free, her ticket $10, reasonable concessions, fantastic weather, and great golf.

Many family milestones this year so we decided to do a Hawaii trip to celebrate them all.  The week that worked out just happened to be this one, so I’m laying out on the lanai watching the waves.

Today brings to mind what XM-MT used to use as a tag line, the biblical passage about children being like arrows in your quiver. My kids are truly a blessing and helped my wife and me immeasurably in the past year. We live in OKC and our kids live in NM and NC. They have relationships and careers but took time out to help care for us in our time of need.

I am my wife's primary caretaker due to her medical issues. In March I had  surgery and went septic a few weeks later. I've been on IV antibiotics since then. Just before I was released from the hospital they discovered cancer: stage 3c colorectal. I'm still on antibiotics and doing chemo. Things looked really dire a few weeks ago, chemo plus infection not being a good combination, but praise be to God, the chemo seems to be working and I am improving!

We speak in a group chat with our children every weekend, for 2 - 4 hours and it's wonderful to keep in touch.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there.

My wife got me Voodoo Ranger and bud light. She’s not aware of the bud light controversy lol but she has a phd in molecular biology so she’s aware you can’t change genders. She lives in a bubble because she works so much. Very lucky
