Det News On Speight's Post-Injury Fiasco At Purdue

Submitted by LS And Play on

Angelique Chengelis was able to speak with Speight's parents on the experience, and what a nightmare it was. This is totally unacceptable from a Big Ten university (or any university, for that matter). LINK and some lowlights:

Michigan and Michigan State have full X-ray capabilities at their stadiums, and they also provide police escorts if a player needs to be transported to and from the hospital. It’s not clear why Speight wasn’t transported directly to a hospital by ambulance.

Instead, Wilton sat in the front seat of a van provided by Purdue and driven by a student. The Speights, two medical trainers, a doctor and Thai Trinh, an orthopedic sports medicine fellow at Michigan, piled into a van to be transported to the student health clinic, about two blocks from the stadium.

...

“They take us in the basement,” Bobby Speight said. “It’s very dimly lit. Halfway down the hall, there’s a (radiology) technician. Wilton is in (partial) uniform and still wearing cleats, and she asks Wilton his name. The (van driver) says he needs an X-ray. (The technician) looks at me and says, ‘I need your insurance card.’ ”

...

“And we waited 20 minutes for the rescue squad team,” he said. “At that point, Wilton says he has tingling in his legs and is in substantial pain. The EMT riding in the back of the ambulance asks us if we need an IV or vital monitoring and Trinh replied, ‘No, but we need him stable and immobile. This is a back injury.’ We stop at a light, and the Michigan doctor asks how long is it going to take, and (the EMT) said 30 to 45 minutes on game day.

“Our doctor asked him, ‘Couldn’t we please turn on the siren and make better time?’ And (the rescue squad member) said, ‘Don’t you get smart with me. You said this is a non-vital trip.’ Our doctor said, ‘I don’t care what I told you, this boy has tingling in his legs. Turn the siren on and go.’

seems unfathomable Purdue didn't have an ambulance on-scene at the stadium???

I thought that was standard operating procedure for a football game at ANY level (they're always there at high school games, for instance).

I used to never care about Purdue because we beat them every year but I hope we fucking drill them by 40 every time they’re on the schedule now. This is so shitty.

So let me get this straight: Purdue technically executes medical malpractice to one player, while also providing dangerous lack of climate control to a lockerroom with 2 toilets for a full team (...) and still had the audacity to respond to Harbaugh's complaints with prosaic twitter snark? Wtf. Who's in charge of that clown show?

This is a dangerous and shameful setup for Purdue. It's a miracle something disastrous hasn't happened. Good on Harbaugh for seeing this and looking at how to create some standards.

Being a former EMS worker it’s pretty clear to me Purdue either had no plan in place, or had never practiced it (probably some BS plan that some Admin came up with years ago). Emergency situations turn into a shitshow pretty quickly when people don’t know what the fuck they’re supposed to do.

A******* at Purdue. From the tepid rejoinders from the AD, to the classless response from Brohm regarding the late hit, to the inexcusable fact of not having an ambulance on site equipped with a spinal board - PU does not belong in the Big Ten (or in any conference for that matter). These athletes give their all for the game, and the treatment received by WS in West Lafayette should be investigated by the conference.......but you know, Delaney.

Holy fuck, that’s a lot worse than things sounded initially. They should be ashamed of themselves. And frankly, if I’m the AD or Harbaugh I’m telling the big ten I’m not playing another fucking game at Purdue until I get proof they can properly care for injured players.

Sad part is:  that a large number of CFB fans won't care because they're more interested in seeing misfortune befall Michigan than they are having professional care for student-athletes regardless of school.

One should the realize medical school for Indiana University - Purdue University is based in Indianapolis. The Purdue Sports Medicine Dept is established for care of Purdue student athletes. The Michigan orthopedics fellow is probably licensed in Michigan, but I am not sure about other states. It is remarkable that the ambulance was not staffed by an EMT or PA. You probably need to investigate Indiana medical healthcare licensing, but it sounds like there is no satellite medical clinic at the Purdue football stadium and hence no x-ray facilities. There are better medical facilities at Indianapolis Motor Speedway or the Indianapolis Colts stadium. If I were Michigan, I would get an orthopedic and/or neurological physician/surgeon, at least a sports medicine physician, who is licensed in Indiana and preferably on staff at IUPUI, who can care for the team, let alone other student athletes. If Purdue wants to give Michigan the cold shoulder, they cannot deny care requested from state licensed physician. I would file a report with the Indiana state health licensing dept about the level of care.

That is insanely negligent considering spinal injuries treated like this could result in permanent debility. Any credible EMS provider would be sensitive to any suspected neurological injury. This wasn’t an ankle sprain for chrissake. I’m amazed in the worst of ways.

As a not-too-athletic engineer, this is purely hypothetical. But if I had a kid worthy of a big time scholarship, even at my alma mater, I would compel them to avoid the big ten altogether based purely on this story. Why risk long term health like this when the ACC, PAC 12 and maybe even SEC have a higher floor for basic emergency care.

Wake up Big Ten and get your shit together. Spend those piles of money on something useful.

Fuck Purdue and their third world medical staff! Purdue and Penn State were never on my shit list, but they've both earned their spots this year. Both are classless.

Completely unacceptable. He would've received better treatment at a high school football game pretty much anywhere in America. That said, next time we play down there, Harbaugh should pick up his own backboard and immobilization kit. After Purdue gets drubbed a few times, we start painting the scores on it. Voila, rivalry trophy. The Big Orange Backboard.
