Basketball Season is 'On' - Ohio and Sparty are playing
Mates,
We had an earlier thread about college hoops goes 'live' today. Well right now Ohio is in a dog fight with the power house program in Akron. Meanwhile, Sparty is hosting Kansas in a meteor game.
Michigan's first real game is tomorrow @ 6:30 v. Buffalo, and they are raising the banners (raise the Fab 5 Banners, too!).
Grateful for the in-depth analysis on the front page about our team. Hopeful for a very solid year. Guessing we start out a little hit-n-miss, but gel and get hot down the stretch.
Q#1: Who wins tonight?
Q#2: Where does Michigan finish this year in the B10, and in the NCAA tournament?
Go Blue,
XM

Not sure who wins tonight but Staee looks decent and some decent length.
I think UM will land somewhere between 1-3 at the top of conference and we’ll see them no lower than a 2 seed as long as they stay healthy. I like to think the B1G prepares their teams better than other conferences but the NCAA tournament is always a different animal.
November 9th, 2021 at 7:44 PM ^
agreed. as much as we like to bag on sparty, i find it hard to believe they'll be out of the top 25.
nice to see ohio down to akron, in columbus. would be fun to have them lose to a MAC team. in state, no less.
November 9th, 2021 at 7:47 PM ^
i still see no evidence of sparty being able to shoot from range. they will play their typical style of fast break and crash the boards, but if they can't make 3s, they will not finish near the top of the BIG.
November 9th, 2021 at 7:54 PM ^
MSU looks pretty good. Hoggard seems to have improved a lot, Christie looks good, it'll be interesting to see how him and Houstan compare. OSU looks like it's all Liddell and nothing else, so what a lot of people thought.
November 10th, 2021 at 2:28 PM ^
I almost texted my Sparty brothers that this loss is more productive/better for this year's team than last year's win at Duke. That win over a hobbled Duke really set up last year's fall to be bigger than it actually was. Anyway, think M is definitely better but Sparty has lost these types of games many times in the past and then come back to give us 2-3 difficult games. You can see the talent, but the turnovers and shooting will continue to haunt them if they can't clean it up.

akron up 60-59 over osu with 4 min to go
November 9th, 2021 at 7:56 PM ^
OSU down by 1 at home against Akron with 4 minutes to play
November 9th, 2021 at 7:57 PM ^
Agree, XM, on Michigan's season. Juwan really pushes the envelope early in the season-on getting everyone playing time as opposed to ensuring wins. I think that by the time the home stretch of the schedule rolls around Michigan will have the kinks ironed out and will be a formidable force. I give the good guys a 50/50 chance of winning both the conference and the B1G tournament-but more likely the tournament than the regular season. It is very likely that they make the elite 8 and make a serious run at the NC.

IIRC, you are a kansas resident. how do you feel about the jayhawks, and what is the temperature of the general populace concerning their hoops team?
November 9th, 2021 at 8:40 PM ^
XM also a resident of Kansas (Overland Park) two daughters at KU.
Bill Self remains untouchable and they have zero concern of NCAA sanctions.
Of course locals are high on this year‘s team and rightfully so. But the locals are all stunned that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are a 500 team.
Jayhawks will be there usual selves and the only thing That brings K state and Missouri fan together is schadenfreude for KU.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:49 PM ^
so, like water off a duck's tail, this is what kansasans (is that a word?) think of:
KU is charged with five Level I violations (the most serious) stemming from the FBI basketball scandal that emerged in September 2017. The NCAA called the violations "egregious" and "severe." The NCAA says Self is responsible for violation of the coach responsibility bylaw.
November 9th, 2021 at 10:56 PM ^
Hey there, fellow KU parent - my kid's a freshman there this year in the art school. Mostly liking it - their favorite aspect so far seems to be going to KC for punk shows.
Rock chalk?

I have no affinity for anything "Kansas". Most of the born-and-breds, in our area at least, are as harsh as the weather-and pathologically provincial.
It's all the natives have-Kansas basketball...well, they claim the Chiefs too. Otherwise, I don't pay any attention to the "general populace"...interestingly, my circle of friends are all non-natives.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:03 PM ^
Well, I got excited when Akron went up 62-59. Suckfest since.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:05 PM ^
you were saying??
November 9th, 2021 at 8:07 PM ^
Ohhhhhhh boy. Not over yet. Fingers crossed.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:05 PM ^
Liddell fouls on a 3 pointer!
November 9th, 2021 at 8:05 PM ^
osu may lose on a 4 pt play when they were up 3. here we go...
November 9th, 2021 at 8:09 PM ^
Ahhhhhhhh fuck!!!
November 9th, 2021 at 8:10 PM ^
Akron completely fucked up their switching on defense, 2 guys ran to the top of the key, shame.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:12 PM ^
OSU once again, so lucky. They looked very bad.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:17 PM ^
So lucky in basically all ways almost all the time. Yes they get bounced in the first round every now and then and that’s enjoyable. And yes they lose a game in football once a year maybe. But damn doesn’t the worm turn eventually?
November 9th, 2021 at 8:14 PM ^
Soooo uh OSU is not good besides Liddell
November 9th, 2021 at 8:19 PM ^
I don't really know anything about any of these Michigan state players but somehow already hate all of them! They all have punchable faces and are annoying!
November 9th, 2021 at 8:23 PM ^
take heart, sparty is down 3 to kansas.
EDIT: sparty now down by 8. nice. and now a tech on sparty. gosh, so upsetting.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:24 PM ^
I was disappointed to see Ohio State win at the buzzer.
I believe Michigan will win the Big Ten and make the final four.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:34 PM ^
Tiny Tom with the "T"!
November 9th, 2021 at 9:25 PM ^
Angry lil troll ????
Now that's a punchable face???
FYS!!!!!!!
November 9th, 2021 at 8:36 PM ^
Sparty slapping the floor.
November 10th, 2021 at 4:27 AM ^
That’s the signal for the opposition to score!?
November 9th, 2021 at 8:39 PM ^
Maybe Sparty should schedule Middle Tennessee St. to open the season.... oh wait.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:42 PM ^
These clearly aren’t Big Ten refs - they didn’t fall for Izzo’s “woe is me” routine.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:43 PM ^
Sparty is looking overmatched athletically. Looks a lot like last year
November 9th, 2021 at 8:45 PM ^
Clearly I view these non-conference games differently than most. I prefer even our hated rivals to win, especially, these early-season games. This is the prime time to build the conference's resume-which benefits Michigan when it comes to seeding time.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:49 PM ^
Just win and Michigan will get a good seed. We don't need OSU and MSU to win to do that.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:43 PM ^
In general, I cheer for the B1G teams...but not MSU or OSU.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:46 PM ^
I’m not gonna draw too many conclusions from tonight. OSU struggled but they have a lot of new pieces to incorporate. Liddell is a dude. Im just not sure they have enough top end talent to compete for a Big Ten title. Same for Sparty in that regard.
While Michigan has a lot of new pieces to figure out as well, we’ve got talent all over the court this year. Defensively, we should be really really good. Offensively, I’m interested to see who steps up as the 2nd and 3rd scoring options alongside solid production from Hunter.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:52 PM ^
just realized the michigan women's hoops team is playing tonight at home. up one in OT, 59-58 to IUPUI. not a great start, but get through it and get better hopefully.
shooting 37% from the field and only 3 of 20 from 3pt. woof.
November 9th, 2021 at 8:58 PM ^
Up 65-58 now, 0:54 left in overtime...
November 9th, 2021 at 9:00 PM ^
Ladies pulling away in OT.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:01 PM ^
MSU’s shooting is going to cause them to lose some clunkers this year
November 9th, 2021 at 9:01 PM ^
Why is MSU playing in this game? UNC has won 3 national championships and made 1 more in the last 20 years. Shoot, UCONN has won 3 championships since 2000
November 9th, 2021 at 9:08 PM ^
They enjoy getting embarrassed on national TV, apparently.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:08 PM ^
Probably because you had four of the biggest coaching names in college bball history: Roy Williams, Coach K, Izzo and Self. Lots of titles between them.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:14 PM ^
? 4 biggest names in college bball history? Coach K - I will give you. Have you heard of John Wooden, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, and maybe Bob Knight? Putting Self on your 4 biggest names is especially rich.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:35 PM ^
He did say 4 ‘of the’ not the 4 best ever, and I would agree that these 4 will go down amongst the greats, shit three of them already have their names on the floors of blue blood schools. But certainly not better than some of the legends like Wooden.
November 9th, 2021 at 9:44 PM ^
No he didn’t. He edited it. It was ?, and his delayed edit confirms his shame for that pathetic take. He called them ‘the four biggest names in college bball history’. (Did not even say coaching names in his post before I called out his ?)
November 10th, 2021 at 8:48 AM ^
Ah I missed that, fair enough! Then yes I fully stand behind you Indy!
November 9th, 2021 at 9:22 PM ^
As they all fade away...into the shadows of Juwan, Wright, Few and Drew.
