B10 football coaches weigh in on Michigan's 2021 season
Per Isaiah Hole/Wolverines YT channel. Really interesting to see the different type of responses from the likes of Day, Tucker & Franklin compared to Ferentz, Schiano, Allen, Chryst, Locksley & Fitzgerald.
That should be Isaiah Hole/WolverinesWire YT channel.
Hey Ryan, is 27 the same as 100? Or was that just a 2021 thing?
He’s about to hang another 100-day winless streak vs Michigan (his tenth in a row). Lots of bad Days for Ryan.
I like it better when they're anonymous. Allen has a tiny head on a big body.
"What was different about facing Michigan last year?"
Ryan Day: *says a bunch of things without ever answering the question whatsoever.*
B1G, not B10.
(Okay, I'll show myself out .... )
Thought even Franklin was fair in his comments. Day and Tucker are incapable of complimenting Michigan.
I have never really listened to Tucker, but is he one of those guys who can only utter cliched coach grunts?
With regard to not complimenting Michigan, it sounded like the question was what allowed Staee to beat Michigan, as opposed to what made Michigan so good last year, which is closer to the question some of the other coaches were asked.
In Tucker's defense the question was about how they were the only team to beat Michigan so it's logical that he'd talk about how they beat Michigan, ie the things they did well in the game.
But yeah, Day certainly couldn't bring himself to say anything good about about Michigan and I don't blame him. It's a rivalry! Get salty, Ryan. Sulk a bit more.
Yeah, Tucker's question was about MSU and he gave an MSU centric answer. I get that.
I cant say that I thought Frames was unreasonable either. Basically said we always play close games in tough environments, but they had the 2 best players on the field. Seems a fair assessment to me. He wasn't making excuses.
Day on the other hand. Couldn't bring himself to do it. Not a good look.
Day didn't answer the question that was asked. Training to be an NFL head coach or a politician already? Some went through serious explanations. Some just stayed with vague statements, like Tucker. And the less we talk about Mr. Franklin, the better.
Thanks for sharing.
Pot kettle here. Harbaugh is the king of not answering questions directly or with any substance. Which is fine. This is a competitive sport, and we're in a very tough position already, no need to give any freebies. The exception to that was Harbaugh's comment last year about some people being on third thinking they hit a triple. That summarizes Ryan Day completely, and in my opinion was the greatest statement by Harbaugh ever.
To be fair to Day, he couldn't hear the question very well. The person asking was on first base.
Ryan Day……more like Cryan Day! I think Day is a good coach but I just get this feeling he still isn’t putting as much stock on Michigan being able to beat them again which is the mindframe I would prefer him to have.
Also, every time I hear Pat Fitzgerald speak I just like that guy more and more. Same with old Kirk Ferentz.
Go Blue!
Like Fitz a lot. Class act.
Let's hope the country club mentality pervades the Ohio St football team. Rest on the laurels of 2002 to 2020. Do it! Let it consume you.
I live in Delaware Ohio and believe me when I say this, every OSU fan around here (and that's 99%) can't wait for the 2022 season to get started as the vast majority consider 2021 as massive failure.
Fitzgerald is cool sometimes, but is a mega-boomer idiot with some of his opinions as well. Like when asked about why college football attendance is declining, he waved around his cell phone and blamed kids today for looking at their phones during dinner as a reason why no one goes to games anymore.
Kids spend more time on they/them smart apps than ever before. Basically sentient beings.
Fitz doesn't "not" have a point.
Cyan Day*
In the Deathstar that is tOSU he is the exhaust vent.
Day clearly thinks the Michigan win was an aberration. The entitlement attitude is still there.
Heh.
Day and Tucker just talked about what their teams did (me, me, me). I think Franklin was fair in his response. They others gave props to a good team - basically answered the question posed, which was their thoughts about how Michigan played last year.
Day looks like a grown up Eddie Munster.
Day was distracted. All he could think about was gathering more nuts before the season is upon us.
Can he stretch the ones he has through winter?
All reasonable, including Mel who was given a different question than the rest, EXCEPT...Day couldn't say one goddamn thing about Michigan except, "We want to beat them," which, no shit. It would've been easy to toss out something like Frames did about Hutch and Ojabo, or just, "They really put together a nice game plan and executed it," or any other cliche. The only nice thing I can say is that he's making it even easier to hate his team.
Well, let's be fair - JH took a shot at Day and OSU the day before (the 3rd base thing). This has the makings of a bitter feud down the road in the next 4 to 5 years.
One thing Frames indirectly said out loud was that the East and West in this conference just aren’t the same. I’m glad somebody brought it up
The disparity between the East and West should be obvious to anyone with an open mind. 8-0 in the conference championship games says it all
It's going to be a moot point when the "West" includes USC and UCLA, and maybe Oregon and Washington.
Strange days indeed.
That was my main takeaway from this video. Franklin wants everyone to know the west sucks.
All fair answers honestly except Day. He avoided that question like the plague. Tucker answered the question presented to him. No issue with that. Frames is just a tool bag
Jesus, day. Answer the question. All the others were reasonable if not complimentary.
The real Q is whether Thee fans will crucify Day upside down or rightside up if he drops the next one against us in central ohio office park land
He won't get fired even if they lose next season. They'd be insane to fire him.
They're in the CFP discussion every year, he's made the CFP twice and the title game once, he recruits like gangbusters and has far and away the most talent in the conference. Especially on offense. Short of Nick Saban deciding to leave Alabama to come coach OSU, they'd have nothing to gain and everything to lose. You can't realistically ask OSU to be in a much better position on a year in, year out basis than they currently are, and I'm not sure the OSU brass wants to risk making the wrong hire for the first time in over three decades. Stick with what you have as its gotten you to the doorstep of the national title.
I do think some of the position coaches would be on the chopping block, possibly coordinators, but Day would not be. But I do think he would enter the 2023 season on a somewhat warm seat. Not scorching hot, but warm.
He won’t get fired if they lose to us, but he’ll get a lot of flack - enough that he might want to test the NFL waters.
I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you for sharing it! A couple takeaways:
1) I want to take full advantage of home field and beat the crap out of Tucker's team this season.
2) I want to beat that question dodger Ryan Day again, but this time on his home field.
Mel Tucker: "We found a way to win." aka we got lucky and a BS call which is the primary MSU game strategy over the decades.
"We flipped a coin and it came up heads 10 times in a row, just like we planned." Lots of luck, although they did burn us on tempo a number of times. FFS, I hope the defense has worked on tempo. It is like a hockey team giving up 4 goals on bad line changes, and then giving up a 5th and 6th on the same thing. I hate losing to a worse team essentially because of a gimmick.
Ok but for once let’s not let one call determine things. Would be nice to win comfortably.
A call that takes a touchdown off the board is a big deal. But they also went 6-for-6 on video reviews.
Thanks for this. Fitz was the best I think - interesting perspectives as a player and a coach.
Didn't want to listen to Tucker - lots of coach speak. Let's end that guy's luck.
Day sure didn't want to say anything. Maybe he remembered how is idea about hanging 100 worked out.
Thank you for sharing this fun watch. The toughest part of Iowa/Ferentz losing the way they did in the B1G Championship is what Michigan did to them is their winning football wet dream.
Wasn't Iowa ranked top 5 after a week or three of the season?
We were all like...slow down.
