Scholarship Count

Jim_S who has a recruiting database and service and also posts on Rivals gave me the go ahead to post his take on the current scholarship situation. I know TTB (Magnus) does a good job of this too. It will be interesting to read both of them. I am sure between the two of them it will give everyone a fairly good idea of where we stand.

"Below I list 92 players on scholarship. This includes 84 recruited athletes, 7 walk-ons currently on scholarship and one walk-on I project to be on scholarship next year. Of the walk-ons, I have a hard time not seeing Tru Wilson and Jordan Glasgow retain their scholarships and Will Hart be awarded a scholarship, so 87 is in my view the current number of "firm" scholarships we have for the 2019 season, which puts us at at least 2 over the limit and at most 7 over the limit. I highly doubt that we will pull scholarships from all the other walk-ons currently on scholarship, so my "best guess" is that we will need to have recruited scholarship player attrition of at least four or five players in order to reach the 85 limit."

Thanks umbig11! OL attrition for PT would not surprise given the incoming class of 6 mostly highly-touted guys and actually having depth and experience there, but I'm hopeful it's coming not from the two-deep but further down the depth chart when you say PT.  Hope it's not somebody like Paea who's been flipped around by the staff a couple times. TE would also not surprise based on offensive scheme change and a stacked room there.

Will be interesting to see what a season of the Gattis offense does to position groups like TE in terms of attrition.

I don't understand why many people assume TE will not be a part of the offense going forward. Here are Alabama's top two TE stats the past five years:

2018:

Player: Rec/Yards/TD's

Irv Snith Jr: 44/710/7

Hale Hentges: 4/34/3

2017:

Irv Smith Jr: 14/128/3

Hale Hentges: 7/75/3

2016:

OJ Howard: 45/595/3

Miller Forristall: 5/73/0

2015:

OJ Howard: 38/602/2

Ty Flourney-Smith: 3/48/0

2014:

OJ Howard: 17/260/0

Brian Vogler: 6/27/1

They tend to feature one TE and the down years are when they are young, but then those guys develop into legit TE targets.

Not sure I understand. For one, Gattis was only at Alabama for one year and was at PSU from 2014-2017. Are you assuming this will look like Bama's offense for other reasons?

Also, not assuming the TE won't be ffeatured heavily, but the profile of the TE we recruit may change based on offensive style. I don't think we'll be seeing the three tight-end max protect formations and it seems like from the spring guys like All who are glorified receivers right now got a lot of run. All speculation until we see the offense in action. It's also possible the TE features less playing time as one guy's talents fit better and there's less reps available with a single TE in the field at a time more frequently.

I had heard speculation that Carpenter would be the center of the future, but Rumler has said that he is going to be slotted in there. MLive had an article on him with this:

“I’m going to start out at guard and get comfortable there,” Rumler told MLive on Wednesday. “And once I get older, I’m going to try and make the transition to center.”

Michigan is pretty much set at center, at least until Ruiz graduates or goes to the NFL. The next guy on the depth chart is Spanellis, who has been playing the position for a couple years and still has a couple years left.

Meanwhile, both Bredeson and Onwenu will be gone after 2019, meaning someone is going to have to fill both those spots in 2020, when Ruiz and/or Spanellis will still be around to play center. So it makes some sense to have Rumler learn guard, because he could potentially start there in 2020.

Carpenter, on the other hand, looks like a guard and most of what I've heard about him has him heading to guard.

I have been pondering this. I could easily believe that there could be some scholarship players on Michigan's team who fit the following criteria.

  1. Have a guaranteed scholarship
  2. Have kept up academically
  3. Healthy physically, no medical issues
  4. Out of State
  5. Will not play in NFL, uncertain prospects for playing elsewhere in college
  6. Enjoy friendships with their teammates
  7. Like being at UofM, Ann Arbor, and their degree program

If someone fits this description, I could easily see them continuing on the team, continuing their education, knowing full well they are buried and unlikely to see the field. They have the cost of room and board, tuition, books covered, get to go to various countries at no personal cost (Italy and France in the past, South Africa soon,) and get the fringe benefits of being a Michigan player. If you have a no cut contract, and do the work, why leave?

I mean, you can go to a lesser school and play, but then you aren't a Michigan grad, don't get the Michigan football team trips, probably end up on a losing team with no bowl game. For some guys, being on the bench with a scholarship isn't all bad.

"get nudged towards the door." That's what I was wondering about. What kind of nudge? How hard of a nudge? When does the nudge come? Just as an example, if I were Peters, I might go to South Africa, and declare a transfer when I get back. I mean, why declare before the trip? Might as well go, enjoy time with your friends, and then head on out the door.

Must credit Brandon Peters when/ if he leaves.

Graduate of M, did not complain, competed.

Did it the right way.  He will still make the pros.

I was at the Rutgers Homecoming game in ‘17 when Peters came in for O’Korn.  We (the crowd) went nuts for Peters out of shear frustration and he easily won the game with some very basic/competent play at QB.  Probably his greatest moment as a UM player.  I wish him well.
