Tuesday Recruitin' Steps Out Of A Large Shadow Comment Count

Jon Daniel Runyan

I missed this last week, but it's a must-read; MaxPreps' Joseph Santoliquito wrote an excellent feature on Jon Daniel Runyan (you may know him as Jon Runyan Jr.) becoming his own man on and off the field:

"Playing football is something I liked, but something that I didn't really love until the last few years I'd say," Jon Daniel admitted. "I've had a lot of people tell me that I'm not my father. That's motivated me. I know who I am. Growing up, I did want to play football because my dad played. It's nothing my parents pushed me to do. It's something I wanted to do. I think it's why I put more pressure on myself than my parents do. I want to be the best. The goal one day is to play in the NFL. To do that, my father always tells me, you have to put everything into it."

Football is not all Jon Daniel plunges added effort into. He maintains a 3.0 GPA at Prep, one of the most academically demanding schools in the Philadelphia area. He's done it through hard work, diligence and with dyslexia, which his father also has.

In his formative years, Jon Daniel had comprehension challenges; auditory processing challenges. In grade school, teachers wanted to place limits on him, telling the Runyans that Jon Daniel couldn't handle a high academic environment.

Jon and Loretta ended that.

You're highly encouraged to read the whole thing.

As for commit updates from last weekend, Brandon Brown has you covered with a free roundup at The Wolverine. Standouts included Alex Malzone, who completed 7/9 passes for 119 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT in a blowout win that was called at halftime due to lightning, and Mike Weber, who had a rather efficient 90 yards and a score on just two carries in a comfortable win for Cass Tech.

Finding A Fit For Wheatley

247's Steve Lorenz posted an update on 2015 TE/DE Tyrone Wheatley Jr., who's yet to decide on an official visit schedule or a decision date; it appears Michigan is taking a slightly different tack in recruiting him recently ($):

The conversations with the Wolverines have been consistent, and are more about building a relationship. One newer tidbit is that Michigan is recruiting him as an athlete, leaving open the possibility that he could play defense down the road.

That makes a fair amount of sense given the limited class size and commitment of TE Chris Clark, especially since Michigan doesn't have a ton of depth at defensive end once Frank Clark and Brennen Beyer graduate after this season.

That Went Poorly

I apologize in advance for this section; sadly, I have yet to figure out how to control recruiting news so it fits my liking, and therefore this week there's lot of stuff like this, for example, on elite 2016 OL Ben Bredeson ($):

Notre Dame has held Bredeson's attention since they offered in June, but their stock is rising after Saturday's visit.

"You always hear about the tradition and the fan base, but once you get to see it in person it is an entirely new story," Bredeson said. "I was lucky enough to be able to experience it, especially for a big game like Michigan. I got to see the best that Notre Dame had to offer for game day. I'm going to go around to other schools for games, but it will be hard to beat what Notre Dame had."

Hnnnnngh. Here's four-star 2016 WR Austin Mack, who also holds a Michigan offer and a great deal of interest from that end, after visiting South Bend for last weekend's game ($):

"I got to talk with Coach Elston before and after the game," Mack said. "After the game, he had a funny comment and asked if I would actually still be considering Michigan after that game. Jaylon (Smith) was standing right there too and he was agreeing with him."

"I talk with Jaylon a lot," Mack said. "He's a great guy to look up to for pretty much everything. He knows how to handle everything thrown at him."

Mack plans to decide at a camp next June, so Michigan still has plenty of time to overcome... that. But there is that, and it's probably not very good.

More 2016 Football Recruiting

Michigan offered 2016 MD WDE Rahshaun Smith, the #51 overall prospect on the 247 Composite, per Rivals' Adam Friedman. Smith holds offers from a laundry list of national powerhouses, and at this early juncture his Crystal Ball favors Oklahoma and Florida State.

Four-star 2016 NJ ATH Ahmir Mitchell told 247's Ryan Bartow that Rutgers currently leads among his his top three schools, with Florida State and Michigan following the in-state squad ($).

Sam Webb penned a free feature on 2016 Cass Tech CB LaVert Hill in which the Technicial defensive coordinator says "he's going to be the best" to come out a program that's produced the likes of Jourdan Lewis, Damon Webb, and many other top cornerback recruits.

Other than Holtz and now perhaps Kelly, ND has been pathetic for decades despite great recruiting.   God help us if we end up like ND.

The thing about Hoke and RR before him is that we go into games and just look like we don't know what we're doing.   Bo/Moeller/Carr would drop a big game here and there, but we were almost always in it.  I've probably blocked other games out, but the only game during those eras I can remember feeling truly outmatched was FSU at home with Teague and I think Warrick Dunn.

I was at the FSU game and it did not feel like a mismatch until the 4th quarter.

Only since RR and Hoke have I been blessed to witness games that were obvious mismatches by the middle of the first quarter.

I'm tired of ND people acting like Saturday wiped out all history of Michigan against them.  Last I checked, 2009-11 still happened; 2013 did in fact happen.  Should we bring up 2006?  How about 1997?

pretty sure both teams scored points in all those games youre referencing and both teams always looked somewhat competitive in all those games - unfortunately michigan got their doors blown off this past weekend and failed to score a point, so i have no problem with those nd coaches and recruits saying those things, jaylon smith deserves to talk and laugh after that game

So add 2003 and 2007 to the list: 38-0 good guys 2x. 2006 was 47-21, hardly competitive.

You're right that they earned the right to brag this year and it will leave a worse stain because of it being the last game indefinitely but we've embarassed ND several times.

I'm still trying to figure out how Hoke continues to have success on the recruiting trail. It's so easy for his rivals to negatively recruit against him with facts. Fact: Hoke is on the hot seat. Fact: He's hasn't sent any impact players to the NFL. Fact: His teams don't seam to improve much at all. Fact: He has a career winning percentage just above .500. Fact: He's never won a conference Championship. Fact: He's been to one BCS bowl. Fact: He's incapable of beating a quality program on the road. Fact: His strength as a coach is on the defensive line but it's yet to be a strength of his Michigan teams. Fact: He preaches toughness and Physicalness as the identity he wants for his teams, but most of his teams haven't actually shown it. Fact: He has a hard time forming his thoughts into complete sentences.

Hi son I'm Urban Meyer. I have a 129-26 career coaching record, I've won two national championships, multiple conference championships, multiple coach of the year awards, I've always dominated my rivals at every place I've coached. I've coached a heisman trophy winning quarterback, I've sent numerous players to the NFL including a kid from Utah who starts at quarterback for a playoff team. In the first year at the school I'm at now we went undefeated. I have and plan to continue to beat Michigan. I'm not going anywhere, so come play for me.

Hi son I'm Brain Kelly. I have a 210-72-2 career coaching record. I've won national championships on the Div. 2 level and multiple conference championships at every level I've coached. I've won multiple coach of the year awards. I've turned around every program I've taken over in a short period of time. I turn my quarterbacks into wizards. In my third season here at Notre Dame we went undefeated and made it to the BCS championship game. I coached a player who almost became only the second defensive player to win a heisman. I just beat the shit out of Michigan and I'm not going anywhere, so come play for me.

Hi son I'm Mark Dantonio. I have an 83-47 career coaching record. I've recently turned Michigan State into a national power. My defenses are awesome, and they especially like abusing Michigan. We've owned our rival Michigan by going 5-2 against them and at times making them look like a Div 1-AA program. We've held our own against national powers like OSU (2-3), ND (3-4), and Wisconsin (4-2). I have 42 wins in the last four seasons, including a Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl win. I've sent multiple players to the NFL including the starting QB for the Browns, the backup QB for the Redskins (who should really be the starter), the starting RB for the Steelers, and the future star CB for the Bengals. I've done all of this with lowly ranked recruits at a school with a tradition of falling on their face. I don't plan on going anywhere and apparently either does my defensive coordinator, so come play for me.

The draw of Michigan and the quality honest man Hoke is must really be a powerful thing.

to know, if it's even possible, whether we picked up any recruits we were battling ND for as a direct result of the dual 38-0 beatings we put on them in 2003 and 2007.  I guess I'm skeptical that a bad game by one school in a head to head matchup would send a recruit to the other school.  Perhaps the result simply confirms a previous inclination?

247 crystal ball has someone predicting brian cole to tennessee,  is he already wavering in his commitment  to michigan, or this just a bunch of hogwash, and just a bunch of bander by a blogger

I saw that too and its from a michigan state insider who previously had his pick for cole as mississippi state, so i would take it with about 30 grains of salt and not panicking untill there is actually smoke coming from the "fire". What i would be worried about is a guy like chris clark talking about wanting to take official visits to other schools previously even after he moved up his commitment to make his pledge to the wolverines. that to me is something to look out for but in the end i wouldnt believe those crystal ball predictions unless about 80% of people start making changes for cole

Why 247 lists Michigan St as MIST is beyond me (I mean, I get it, MI is the abbrevation for Michigan, but it's nonsense), not Mississippi State. I think this is a case of he was wrong and is trying to get "points" for predicting something random, and Tennessee has some connections to the Saginaw/Flint area. It's one of the stupid flaws in the CB system, where you just see these guys trying to get points instead of being honest.

These kids don't really care about one game, two weeks from now it will be forgotten. If Michigan is the team they want to play for they will feel that their fellow recruits and themselves will be the ones to turn it around. Look at all of Peppers quotes from last year, he wanted to go somewhere to build something back up.
