Butler Visits, Doesn't Commit

Three-star Lakewood (OH) St. Edward CB Tony Butler, who finally decommitted from Pitt a couple weeks ago, visited campus for a few hours yesterday. While Jim Harbaugh was still in France, Butler spent time with Mike Zordich and his former high school coach, Rick Finotti, and he told Scout's Bill Greene the visit helped Michigan's chances:
"It was helpful spending the time with the person that could be be my position coach some day, rather than talking to a lot of different coaches," he continued. "The visit moved them up with me, and I could see myself in that environment. I feel comfortable there, and think I could fit in well."
While a commitment was in the realm of possibility, that didn't go down, and Butler mentioned that he wants to take all five of his official visits—including one to Michigan. The Wolverines are considered the favorite, so long as they have room and want Butler in the class, but there's a new entry into his recruitment: Clemson, which offered on Tuesday, per 247's Steve Wiltfong. They should receive an official, as well.

Official Visits That May Or May Not Amount To Anything
Top-100 DT Jordan Elliott, a Houston commit who's long stated his intention to see other schools, tweeted his list of official visits Tuesday, and Michigan made the cut along with USC, Alabama, Texas, and LSU. As that list indicates, Elliott won't be an easy pull, but there's been mutual interest between him and Michigan for a while now.
Top-100 CA WR Dylan Crawford is also eyeing an official, per Rivals' Blair Angulo ($):
"I still don't have any dates or anything like that, so I'm still trying to get all the information and get in contact with the coaches to find out what the best time is to get out there," Crawford said. "I'm trying to set visits with Miami and Michigan, for sure. I haven't visited the new Michigan staff, so I'd like to do that.
"I have a great relationship with those guys. Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and coach (Tim) Drevno have been by our school and we have a great relationship."
Crawford is expected to remain in Pac-12 country, though the presumed early favorite, USC, may not have room for him at wide receiver by the time he makes a decision.
Top-100 GA ATH Mecole Hardman told TMI's Josh Newkirk he plans to take an official to Ann Arbor, but first the coaches have to show more interest ($):
‘“I plan on taking an official (to Michigan),” he said. “But I really don’t talk to the coaches like I want to. I am going to try to get in contact with them. I want to try to build a relationship with them and see how everything goes.”
However, he says U-M must start showing some more interest soon to make up ground in his recruitment.
“I just want to hear interest,” he said. “I want to hear that they want me in their program. Everybody wants to feel wanted. Just the need of feeling wanted.”
Hardman's top group is four SEC powers and Miami (YTM), and he plans to make a silent commitment—which could come at any time—before actually announcing it on Signing Day. I'd be surprised if this visit actually materialized.
In other visit plans that should be met with low expectations, five-star CA OLB and USC commit Mique Juarez told 247's Ryan Bartow that Michigan is on his list of official visits, then didn't mention M among the schools currently talking to him ($).
Four-star TX OT Jean Delance isn't sure if he'll take officials before making a decision, but if he does, Michigan will be one of the destinations, per Bartow ($). I'm not sure Michigan would even have room for him right now, though that might not be of much concern; the Wolverines appear to have only an outside shot at landing him anyway.
That's "THE Julian Jordan" To You
Ambry Thomas (left) at Sound Mind Sound Body. [Bill Rapai]
247's Steve Lorenz reports that Michigan will host a contingent of Detroit King prospects for the BBQ at the Big House on August 2nd ($):
Wolverine247 has confirmed that 2017 Top150 CB Ambry Thomas, 2016 Top100 CB Lavert Hill, 2018 QB El Julian Jordan and 2019 linebacker Tyrece Woods are currently expected to attend the event, a holdover that has stuck with Michigan's off-season recruiting plans since the Rich Rodriguez era.
Notably absent from that list: four-star WR Donnie Corley. Lorenz also mentions that despite the Dennis Norfleet situation, the new coaching staff has made a "great, great impression" on King's coaches. Repairing that relationship would be huge for Michigan's in-state recruiting.
Etc.
Michigan offered 2018 Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter's Prep twin brothers Jayson and Justin Ademilola last week, and they look to be in very good shape; according to Tim Sullivan, the two were planning a trip to Ann Arbor even before receiving their offers ($):
"I called Coach up," [Jayson] Ademilola explained. "I'm visiting August 2, so I just wanted to touch base. I sent them my transcripts a couple weeks ago, because they wanted to see what my grades were like. First he said was they were waiting for me to call, he said, 'we're going to offer both of you guys a full scholarship offer to the University of Michigan before you come up to visit.'
"I was pretty just happy. Me and my brother both like Michigan a lot. How Coach Partridge - a recruiting coordinator at Michigan - used to be a coach in New Jersey is cool. We were just really happy and excited to hear it."
There's obviously a long way to go here, but M looks good early.
ESPN's Jason Crabtree spoke to several coaches, under the veil of anonymity, to get their thoughts on prospects at The Opening. Rashan Gary got the highest praise—"our staff believes he's the highest impact recruit to come out in the last five years," said one Big Ten assistant—and Michael Onwenu also earned several mentions:
Michigan offensive guard commitment Michael Onwenu and Kentucky center pledge Drake Jackson were also mentioned by several coaches. A Pac 12 coach said "both of those guys are really, really good."
This stuff is relatively informative since anonymous college coaches are under absolutely no obligation to praise prospects who won't attend their school.
In an article on the top uncommitted Midwest prospects, Rivals' Josh Helmholdt said two schools seem to be standing out for four-star KS DE Xavier Kelly ($):
This race is really wide open and a lot can happen in the six months between now and when Kelly plans to decide. However, Alabama and Michigan definitely look like the strongest contenders here and he has visited each in the last month.
It had to be Alabama, didn't it?
We can probably bid happy trails to four-star CA CB David Long, who wants to decide—likely between Stanford and Washington—in the next month, which he told 247's Lars Hanson will probably prevent him from taking an official to Ann Arbor ($):
"I really like Notre Dame and Michigan but I don't see myself being able to get out to those two programs," he said. "I wouldn't exclude UCLA or Notre Dame out of that bunch, although I haven't visited Notre Dame."
He gone.
2018 and 2019 recruits...wow.
the odds of getting Rashan Gary?
60/40? 50/50? I'm getting less and less confident.
I wonder what Magnus thinks.
Is there a reason you're getting less and less confident? Because he's drawing major interest from other top programs? I know, that's very uncommon for the #1 overall prospect.

That's true... but given how much of a head start we had on Gary's recruitment its natural that we would lose some ground. Like uncle Olaf says, show me a hot woman and I'll find you a guy who's tired of boning her.
I still like our chances, but I don't think the guy is off base for thinking our chances are not improving.
Magnus doesn't interview recruits.
Why would his opinion on a percentage matter to you?
Just curious.
he is more in tune with recruiting than anybody else on this board. . .
How so?
More than Ace?
Magnus may view HUDL sites and write his personal opinions of high school football players, but he doesn't know who has offers from where or where a player is trending unless he hears it third hand.
he doesn't really respond. Which is fine. It's not his job. I would ask Ace but he's busy.
Magnus responds and interacts. .
I've always wondered about this "situation" because I see it in other places as well.
People need another source to make them feel (for lack of a better word) fulfilled. Happens in fantasy sports quite often. A person will call into a radio show because he/she doesn't know who to pick for their utility spot that week. They need to ask somebody, anybody, in order to get a second opinion no matter how completely wrong it will likely be so they can decide in their own head. Do they need someone to blaim if it goes wrong?
In this case though there is no right or wrong really... so I don't understand why people even ask questions like this. I mean to be fair you just asked a random internet commentor - who has no knowledge of the subject (not a knock, literally nobody does even the so called "experts") - for a percentage of what he FEELS a 17 year old kid will do regarding where he will sign to attend school 6 months from now. I mean the question itself is borderline (completely?) insane, so I mean knock yourself out I guess. I don't even know. I just think it's stupid. No offense to you personally.
For not caring, you've invested a lot of time in dissuading others from asking Magnus his opinion.
Oh no I defintely do care about people being disingenuous.
I don't care why people need another opinion - even if it is baseless - to make decisions for themselves.
I hear ya... but what decision is being made from this opinion? I guess I assumed it was simple killing time at work waiting for the day to end discussion on a sports message board.
Give me a percentage on what I find out my dog did to my house when I get home tonight.
Does the dog have good hips? Pad level?
Call your significant other for that info.
"I don't care why people need another opinion - even if it is baseless - to make decisions for themselves."
Huh? What a bizarre series of posts. The first poster simply asked if Magnus could jump in with his opinion, since he is more knowledgeable about recruiting than the poster at least, given that Magnus operates a site that provides good info on recruiting and roster analysis (even if the hot chick pics are an unnecessary distraction for some of us). Even if the info IS third hand, it could be third hand info he is unaware of so that it still has value. He didn't cite Magnus as an absolute authority on Gary's thinking, which no one but Gary can provide--yet you act as if the poster is ready to sign up for a Magnus cult and tithe away all his worldly goods. Beyond this, most people get that in making decisions it is actually better to get an expert opinion than blunder around in ignorance.
To illustrate this, let's apply your statement above to other situations.
You and the poster are both general practitioners. The poster is concerned that a patient may have a heart condition but wants to consult a cardiologist. Your reply:
"I don't care why people need another opinion - even if it is baseless - to make decisions for themselves."
You and the poster are in an unknown city. You're heading downtown, but you don't want to get lost in that bad area nearby. You are asked, "Should we consult a map?" Your reply:
"I don't care why people need another opinion - even if it is baseless - to make decisions for themselves."
See crazy this sounds?
My initial reason why I asked Magnus to chime in is that since he does know a ton more about recruiting than I do, and he has always given great information on this board. I also was thinking that he possibly did speak to Ace or Brian or whoever to possibly give an idea of what the kids thoughts were. Or after following tons of recruits seeing this play out like a Sean Bradford, or Dashawn Hand, or Kevin Newsome that he could say this feels a lot like Player X or Player Y.
I didn't think someone was going to psychoanalyze the hell out of me. . .
This blog attracts a lot of quality fans and informative members of the fan base. Generally speaking, most people here I have found to be pleasant, and egar to engage in casual Michigan based conversation. This being said every group will always have a dick in the mix.

I'd go with ??%-??%.
until signing day is a viable strategy. They'll make sure they have room to take Gary and maybe one or two more, but they can't wait that long to fill positional needs. I suspect you might be right about them waiting for some of those names now. Once official visits start, there will be potential commitments they aren't going to turn down.
It's probably a moot point. Imo, Gary is the only one of those players who'll wait that long.

Well, I just read the comment section for the first time. That was an interesting discussion.
Anyway, I would give Michigan the plurality of chances right now. I think Michigan is in the lead, but Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are potential destinations. Personally, from what I've seen and heard, I do not think he will end up at a school that primarily runs a 3-4, so that probably removes Alabama and Georgia. People have heard bad vibes about Gary with Ohio State, but they've turned up the heat with Larry Johnson, and you can't really argue with his success. Auburn has been doing well with player development in recent years, too.
So...I think Michigan leads. I would probably say 35% right now. I don't really think Michigan is the best choice, though. We simply don't have the history of developing those types of players.
I don't really think Michigan is the best choice, though. We simply don't have the history of developing those types of players.Does player development history really factor into the conversation with a new coaching staff, though? Or are you taking into account Harbaugh's record with developing DT's at Stanford as well, which could very well not be great, I wouldn't know off-hand.
I believe it does. There's often a trickle-down effect for a school from the expectations, the other players, the coaches, etc. Michigan's defensive line coach is Greg Mattison, who was part of the previous staff. Stanford has 1 current DT in the NFL, and that's 2015 fifth-rounder David Parry.
Regardless, this equation isn't all about Michigan. Ohio State has a better history of producing defensive linemen recently, and their DL coach, Larry Johnson, is one of the best in the business, if not THE best. Meanwhile, Auburn has sent defensive tackles Nick Fairley (1st), Pat Sims (3rd), Angelo Blackson (4th), Sen'Derrick Marks (2nd), and Gabe Wright (4th) to the NFL since 2008, not to mention DE/OLB types like Dee Ford and Corey Lemonier.
Thank you for your input! I appreciate your efforts and greatly respect your opinion.
If we were gonna get him, I would have thought he would have committed by now. I think we are still in the hangover of season past. Until we can show improvement on the field, these guys will flirt with us and go elsewhere. One day..soon (!)...it will turn for us.
Go Blue!
I agree with this. I suppose if we have a really successful season this year, and Gary stil has an open mind - even with that I'd put the odds, at best, around 33.3 (repeating of course).
Gary will be making his decision on signing day. He was not gonna commit before that.
Some people here are so clueless about recruiting. Gary has always said he will commit at the UA game or right around signing day. There has been no change in that so why would that hurt Michigan's chances.
Because M's history with late commits sucks eggs is why.
Regarding Gary and Kelly, I hate when it's down to us and an SEC West school($$$). It's like going into a boxing match with one hand tied behind your back.
the completion for these high schoolers is much stiffer for the bama' s with coach Harbaugh and staff.
Gary is fifty, fifty just like everybody else. Would be a nice get though. Based on his high potential and all the praise he's getting.
