Goodbye, oh ye of many numbers

Not a surprise, even with the late slide in production:

"I would like to thank my family, coaches and teammates for their support," Funchess said in a statement. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and I am prepared to take the next step in my journey."

Funchess has some mouths to feed and should get drafted high despite the indifferent performance this year. He has a size/speed combo reminiscent of Mike Evans and someone's going to take a shot at him in the late first round.

Funchess exhibited a lack of heart that I don't want anywhere near the Lions. He was as disappointing of star as I have ever seen at Michigan. If Gallon had his measurables he would have been the greatest player in Michigan history.

Give me Jeremy Gallon anyday over Funchess. Heart and determination matter at the NFL level. Funchess has neither.

He seemed to have tons of potential, but the production on the field wasn't there.  Too many drops and he seemed to not get very open much.  Also, his blocking could have been much better.  The question is whether this was due to lack of ability or lack of effort.  I've been firmly in the lack of effort camp for a while.  So, was that because he's not a hard worker or was just tired of the lousy offense and packed it in?  Whatever it was, he's going to have to convince the NFL people that he can be a productive player in the League before they invest a high draft pick on him.  But, I hope he does very well and makes Michigan proud.

I put him in the lack of effort category too. And while I wish that he does well in the NFL, it's going to piss me off one way or the other. If he does well, I will lament the fact that he couldn't have put in more effort while at UM. If he does not do well, it will make me think he still doesn't get it, doesn't want to put in the work, and wasted his immense talents.

I definitely didn't form the same fanhood bond with him that I usually do with high profile Michigan players. It's more of a Jamal Crawford type Michigan bond.

I see Alshon Jeffery potential - think about Jeffery's last year in college with no QB, gained weight, slipped to the 2nd round.

Of course Jeffery's hands have been ridiculous at times in the NFL - so we'll see.

Good luck to him.  Doesn't make much sense for him to stick around.  He'll probably surprise some people, especially if he can show he can stretch the field again.

I wish him well in the NFL or wherever his future takes him. Frankly, though, I just can't see him as a first round pick given his body of work at Michigan... even with a fabulous combine. You still need to be able to prove you can catch the ball consistently against reasonably good competition.

Being from Indy, I'd like to see the Colts take him (if he falls enough in the draft - we need OL early and often) to replace a possibly retiring Reggie Wayne. Best of luck to him wherever he lands, though! The kid has serious potential!

It was unfortunate to not be able see his full potential this season, but I know a team is going to get a real talented player. There was some things that would be good for him to work on one more year, but I understand his decision. Good Luck Funchess.

Taking the GRIII route. Could use an extra year of polishing up those skills but their minds are in the league. It's best for all parties to part ways when that's the case.

Good luck Funchess!

Funchess is not a 1st rounder. Not with his questionable hands and effort. The crappy QB play can only account for so much. The INT vs Minny where he alligator-armed it was truly appalling.

He doesn't run great routes, has decent-but-not great speed,  questionable hands, is a nondescript blocker, and does not give great effort.  Much of this can be fixed, but the effort part is a serious problem.

I see him as a mid-round guy who could with emotional maturation and coaching become an All Pro someday. But I doubt it. The kid lacks what Jeremy Gallon had in spades. It's unfortunate Funchess has the talent that Gallon deserves. What a waste.

So we wish him well but as of today the guy will do nothing in the nfl. I expect little to zero impact as a rook. Perhaps if he lands in right spot he can become much more in time. As of today, I simply don't see it. It is no surprise he's leaving but also clearly could use another year. A host of kids with less talent have made similar choice so just hope it works out. Go Blue.

Say what you want negative or positive, but the genie is out of the bottle. Any head coaching change is a crap shoot.

Mr. Funchess - thanks for your efforts on behalf of the Michigan football program. I, for one, am sorry to see you leave early. Best of luck in your career.

Who in the world advises these kids? I need a system like the NBA where they can see what pro scouts think of them before they enter. It's a crime to let kids like him go pro and waste what they had at Michigan or at any college

He doesn't run sharp routes, he doesn't get much separation, he drops easy passes, and he doesn't block. His physical tools will get him drafted but if he doesn't put in some serious work he'll be a huge bust.

My opinion should of stayed another year thought he had a rough year this year and could use more development.

This guy had so much potential I feel he only touched the surface at M.
