Greg Frey reported on campus at FSU (Tomahawk Nation, Land of 10, etc).
Tomahawk Nation, Land of 10, and Noles247 are all reporting that Greg Frey has driven to Tallahassee after the Outback Bowl to meet with Willie Taggart.
The sites are indicating that the deal looks to be finalized today for him to join the FSU staff

not missed, based on early comments

Yes. This wouldn't be happening if Jim wasn't okay with him leaving, so we aren't taking some major hit here. He's a solid recruiter, but when we went back to mostly gap schemes Frey took a back seat here.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:49 PM ^
What do you mean? If another team wants to throw some more money at him and/or give him a bigger role, he's gonna take it, regardless of what Harbaugh wants.

If FSU makes an attractive offer, I don't think there's much Jim could say to keep him here.

Now if only Taggart could take the other glorified Oline Coach with him in Drevno. Ugh.

I mean, that's completely disingenuous. The run game dramatically picked up about halfway through the season.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Unfortunately the improvement against the soft underbelly of the B1G had not as much to do with Frey and more to do with running a more familiar scheme.
Good luck to him.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Not so sure that's because of Frey though. I could be completely wrong here but my understanding for the run game improving was that the team went away from what Frey is known for (zone schemes?) and moved back to a power run game principles.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:23 PM ^
Totally valid, but the OL was doing pretty well in the run game for the 2nd half of the season (and not just the soft underbelly) after a dismall start. They did not finish well in the bowl game, but either way I was just saying it's disingenuous to pretend they did nothing right all year,

Right cause we had pretty stiff competition to open the season.

of finding OL and turn them to NFL player like his first tenure at Michigan, Indiana and WVU. Whatever is happening this season, I'm not sure if it's on Frey.
January 2nd, 2018 at 6:04 PM ^
it's not on Frey. Unless of course he's been secretly coaching the QBs, the receivers, and the playcalling.
Oh, he's probably at fault for the punting too. /s

how do you get -9234 points? That's amazing.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:39 PM ^
It is definitely possible, and someone just a couple months ago managed to post the necessary posts to subtract over 2500 points from their own total with only help from the board itself. Subtraction that large requires some special intervention, of course, not that I would know.

As an odd philosophical match between Drevno and Frey...

a zone blocking guru? THat was scrapped midway through the season to go to straight power? I agree, not a good fit.

This has been long-rumored. Wouldn't be surprised that he's gone. I do think people putting the bulk of the blame on him for the offensive line issues are reaching a bit. He never seemed like Michigan totally bought into a single form of run-blocking, and for zone to succeed you sorta have to rep it for a long time and really ingrain it into your team. Trying to do it in a year is going to lead to mixed results, at best.
I do wonder how the offensive line coaching ultimately plays out. It feels like if Drevno is still here, they might break up his duties and find someone who only focuses on the line instead of this weird "you take tackles and TEs, I'll take interior" thing they may have had going on this year.

Creating a free run at the QB between the Guard and Tackle?
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:45 PM ^
Take the whole offensive staff with you!
I'm waiting urgently for Harbaugh to put the hammer down on them. He was visibly upset with the decisions they were making yesterday.

Meritocracy?
Yeah, sure...
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:34 PM ^
I don't get this take. Jay has really done a decent job since he has been here. He seems to be a decent recruiter and his positions were the least of UM's troubles the past couple of years. I guess having the name Harbaugh isn't such a great thing when things are going bad.
January 2nd, 2018 at 7:00 PM ^
One can't claim to operate on the basis of a meritocracy and hire their inexperienced son who, I don't think ever played college football, for $250,000+/year. Every job he's ever had was a gift (Oregon State due to JH's Riley connection and the Ravens due to his uncle). His job on the Ravens was in stats (not a position coach). By contrast, the son of a good friend of mine played ball in the Ivy League and managed to get a job on his own as an NFL scout. He's 25 and making $60K and absolutely working his ass off.
Believe me, Jay's spot on the staff and the amount he's making is not lost on those who have played at UM (a number of ex-players have brought it up with me). Most companies/organizations would never allow this sort of nepotism. It sends the wrong signal. If Harbaugh wants his son to make that much dough be could pay for it himself.
You don't think Mike Hart wouldn't take the RB coach at UM for a quarter million a year?

year which falls clearly in his domain.
Would one expect him to be able to coach that at a high level given he has neither been a RB nor coached RB's before?
He should be coaching at a MAC school at this point of his career at best.

Harbaugh is 8-8 in his last 16 games at UM.
You don't think he has issues on his staff? Who taught DPJ to field punts over his shoulder on the seven yard line? To try to field another with his teeth on the ten?
The unbridled cult of personality that slappies like you have constructed surrounding this staff would be amusing if it wasn't so damn pathetic.
How many times did UM QB's get slobbernockered because RB's didn't pick up blocks this year? But, yeah, all is well with hiring amateurs at premium rates...
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
I'd rather have Jay Harbaugh not with the program in general.

Lets find some one that can develop a cohesive Oline. Watching 3 different QBs piss their pants all year was not enjoyable. Pretty hard to keep your eyes downfield when you're getting fuckin lit up every pass play.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:15 PM ^
passing game problems" is getting really old. Yes, the pass pro could have been much better. But it wasn't nearly as terrible as you make it sound. There were plenty of pass plays where all 3 QB's had enough time to throw, and they either 1) held the ball too long and got sacked, 2) couldn't find any open receiver, 3) threw the ball off target, 4) threw an interception, or 5) gave up and ran for a loss or short gain. And by the way, it would have been nice if the running backs and TE's helped out on the pass blocking a lot more. Higdon missed guys on at least two plays yesterday leading to sacks.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:25 PM ^
These things are interrelated. If it had only been one thing, you could have somewhat schemed around that (some would be harder to scheme around than others). But the combination of OL play, lack WR experience/separation, trouble in backs/TE blocking, spotty QB play added up to something you couldn't do much about.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:32 PM ^
Its getting super fucking old. It doesnt change whats been going on, you can say its all everything, but 3 shellshocked QBs ~ I mean I'm taking about 3 QBS! because they all got fucking blown up out of games ~ didn't happen because they were coached to be waffling soft cocks. They have been getting destroyed by humungous hits, to the point that it was cruel to call half the plays.
January 2nd, 2018 at 3:48 PM ^
Any chance Drevno is going with him? Frey has a better track record of producing elite tackle prospects, would rather he be around over Drevno given the need for next year.
Also pretty much kills any outside shot of landing Petit-Frere which should contribute to the shitty recruiting year at is the cherry on top of this turd football year.
