Another Great Don Brown Interview --- Praises D. McCaffrey
https://michigan.247sports.com/Bolt/WATCH-Michigan-defensive-coordinato…
Thought you guys would enjoy this. Don Brown so animated in this interview. He's so much more entertaining and informative to listen to than anyone else on the staff. He absolutely praises Dylan McCaffrey during this, saying that he's been doing an unbelievable job as the scout team QB and is all business in his approach.
Brown was so excited about McCaffrey, that when asked about Brandon Peters, he just continued to talk about Dylan McCaffrey....
Our future with Peters, McCaffrey, Milton and Doyle looks extremely bright at the QB position. Brighter than it's been in a long time.

Should also note that Pep's first interview in seemingly months is the 2nd half of the video in the link.
Pretty sure I heard Angelique mutter how Don Brown is much funner to talk to :p

Pep is so quiet and low key, the second half is almost a let down, the energy in the room is so reduced.

how awesome Don Brown is? I'm my own boss now but what I would have given to have a guy like that be my coach or supervisor or boss. I have come to realize that the primary reason Brown is so damn successful as a DC is not schematic...it's his ability to lead, communicate and teach.

I like the Peters-McCaffrey 1-2 punch through 2022 or whenever DMC graduates. I haven't seen enough of Milton and Doyle to feel strongly yet. I know Milton has a disgusting huge arm but no polish and I know next to nothing about Doyle.
Hopefully we can sign Michael Johnson in the 19 class and Harrison Bailey in 2020. Then it's a pipeline that's really pumping.

The great thing about getting a guy like Milton with all the physical abilities is he won't (shouldn't, unless catastrophe ensues) be relied to play right away. His first couple years in the program will be great for him to build foundation and learn the offense. Also it will be great for him to learn behind Peters and McCaffrey, two all americans in hs... not to mention Jim Harbaugh.
I haven't looked into '19 or '20 with regards to QB prospects but I'll take a look at those guys. Wasn't Johnson's dad supposed to come coach here and then didn't?
November 1st, 2017 at 2:24 PM ^
Yeah. He was going to be the 10th assistant but the NCAA delayed that rule by a year.
It's a stupid domino for just one recruit but I kind of hope Taggart goes to Florida and his staff scatters and we hire Michael Johnson Sr. after all. Then Junior is a shoo-in to Michigan (again).

Depending on how Peters/DMC play and how long they stay we may not even see Milton in real game action til he's a RS Junior/Senior.. I'm cool with that.
November 1st, 2017 at 4:52 PM ^
I wouldn't overlook him. He's got size, some mobility and a nice arm. The eye test suggests Doyle has real potential has a Harbaugh-esque pro style pocket passer.
So much for my arm chair two cents worth.

Regardless, either him or Milton won't have to play early so they've have plenty of time to develop. Future prospects at the QB position are damn solid.

I hear something mentioned about McCaffery it is always very positive about how good he is. Just needs to put some muscle on his frame and he could be a lights out QB. Watched him play several times in high school and can tell you he is the real deal. I think he will give Peters a good run for the starting job next year.
I think next year we are finally going to start seeing the championship level QB play we have been missing for a while. Let's get the WR's to step up and line continue to improve and our offense might start being dangerous again and be able to help out our defense.

I would prefer Wilton to stay for depth - which he might do to work toward a grad degree - as I fully expect Malzone to transfer once he gets his degree (this summer?). That would leave us with just DCaff and Frosh at backup QB which isn’t ideal.

I'd like to have Speight on the roster, but ready to move on from him. Made same mistakes he made in 2016. He just didn't seem to develop from when he first played.
Now watch Peters. My guess is he'll be a totally different, as in better, QB than we saw against Rutgers.

Yes, he could play worse. But he's the future and I'm willing to accept he'll make some mistakes as a RS Freshman.
November 1st, 2017 at 3:49 PM ^
Wilton will not turn pro, but if he wants to play next year it will have to be at another school or else accept he will be 3rd on the depth chart and not see the field. He has reached his ceiling and it's time for Michigan to go with the QB's who can raise the level of play at the position and lead UM to championships.
November 1st, 2017 at 5:50 PM ^
We do not know what Speight will do, but it would not shock me if he stayed. After all, who's got it better than us?

That's considered in my comment. Like I said, if Peters is the starter for the rest of the season, he will be the quarterback that the staff wants to win the starting job for next year, this offseason. Peters closing out this year means that he is playing well enough to A) move the offense more reliably than JOK over the next two games, and B) warrant not disrupting if Wilton becomes available in a few weeks. At that point, plus bowl practices, Peters will have the upper hand on Wilton.
As another commenter said, I would like to have Wilt as a backup next fall, that would be a high floor for a backup QB. However, I could see Wilton transferring somewhere closer to home as he sees the writing on the wall. UVA will have an open QB job this offseason. I could see him and Bunting transferring somewhere together (I don't know anything here, so don't run with this as a rumor). Once Peters has success in games, and multiple game experiences, Wilton's experience advantage has been diminished to the point where you go with the guy with superior talent, which is clearly Peters.

While they're crazy competitive.
Can't help but think with the family okay money-wise that they'd prefer he get a degree, maybe even 5th year and masters.
Therefore the extra year and red-shirt on McCaffrey this year is huge. By the time he starts I also hope there is an unstoppable wall of beef around him.
I think how Peters finishes this year will matter more in the fans eyes than Harbaughs. I do think how the team views him and his performance will slightly override a full meritocracy.
If you have 2 QB's you have none.
I'd rather have 3 QB's than one terrible one though, and I think the future it bright.

Why will Harbaugh not listen to me, an anonymous internet poster?!
November 1st, 2017 at 2:23 PM ^
I am looking forward to McCaffrey taking over as the starter in a few years, playing well, and then seing a stream of threads to the effect of "OMG Harbaugh really screwed that up, should have put McCaffrey in against Purdue back in 2017."
November 1st, 2017 at 2:58 PM ^
on WTKA over the QB decision has gotten intolerable. People just won't let it rest. Hopefully, it will die down really soon.
November 1st, 2017 at 3:48 PM ^
It will likely die down when UM loses another game or Peters fails. As long as UM continues to win with Peters playing well the second guessing will continue. If UM somehow manages to win out the decision to play Okorn over Peters likely cost the team the MSU game and a spot in the playoffs. Big IF there but its potentially looming, lets hope so.
November 1st, 2017 at 5:47 PM ^
You are waiting for, and hoping that, criticisms of coaches' qb decisions to die down? Lol.
