We're Roasting Bacon on March 6 to Save the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase
UPDATE: The VIP+Shirt level is now available.
This is what it sounds like. A comedy roast, by professional roasters, bloggers, and radiomen, of John U. Bacon, online, live, at 8:30 PM EST of March 6, 2021, with all proceeds going to the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, because if we don’t we probably won’t have it anymore.
If you want to see it, it’s $10 for the first 150 people and $15 after.
Also there’s a VIP hangout after.
Right, we’ll also do a VIP hangout/Q&A with Bacon and the roasters after the show for those who want to give a bit more.
Also a Shirt
And oh right, there’s a shirt option on the Eventbrite too. We’re still getting the design ready but it’s based on this:
I’ll have a post when we have it ready. We’ll run the shirts the way we do for HTTV: I’ll email you a link you can take to put in your order and then it will track through Underground Printing.
TIERS
ARGH there’s an error on the signup that will get fixed this morning in Pacific Time, but this is the plan:
-
$50: Gets you into the show + the t-shirt + the VIP chat after the show.
-
$30: Gets you into the show + the t-shirt
-
$15: Gets you into the show
-
$10: Same as the $15 for the first 150 people who sign up.
The error is there’s a $25 show+VIP option on there right now.

The Story
It began when my best friend sent me a tweet.
Please donate to help The Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase survive the pandemic. This club is my home away from home and I wouldn’t be the comic I am without it. Anything helpshttps://t.co/YLXFFIPohd

I read it over six times, the way you read news that someone you very much were not done with was going to die. I mean, we just spent all fall trying to make sure Ann Arbor institutions we love would still exist at the other side of this. I clicked around to be sure it was real. Then I sent it to Jason Sklar, because I knew he’d be even more horrified.
He was. He got Randy. We bounced around ideas. A show. It’s got to be comedy, because duh. What can we do that’s funny, mispronounce the names of basketball players from Detroit? Deep cut State basketball jokes? Make fun of Harbaugh? Not the time. Make fun of Beilein? Hmmm, no he’s too nice. Brian? No, needs to be famous enough for people to care. Sam? Nobody can hate on Sam. Needs a heart deep enough to let us take shots at him for charity, a hockey player’s ribcage to survive it, and a face that everyone wants to …Omigod I’ve got it.
The Sklars productively asked Jeff Ross, because who doesn’t respect a home comedy club. I texted Bacon, who chose to reply mere minutes before his Friday show. It was a very polite conversation:
So I called in, wormed my way past Miz, and issued a challenge. Somehow Sam Webb got blamed for it (16:30):
The upshot is Bacon said yes.
So we’re doing this. Saturday March 6, 8:30 PM eastern. I’m still putting the panel together a bit but the lineup will be at least as good as the above and probably way better. UPDATE: Bruce Madej and Holly Anderson too!

Roasted Bacon? Sounds yummy.

Seth, can you update this post when the $50 option shows up on the eventbrite?

Brilliant !
John U Bacon has leached off of Michigan for years for his personal wealth, claiming to be an 'insider / fan' and yet his books have purposefully exposed any possible hint of Michigan folly, to Michigan's detriment & his wealth.
What a traitor !
ROAST-ing him is an excellent idea.
Save the Comedy Club!
PS - Somebody roast his horrific, pathetic Boston marathon gimmick -- Please!
Go Blue.

How is Scott Bell not part of this?

You should also just sell the shirts! I may not be able to make the event, but I will definitely buy a t-shirt

Go Blue.

Will do.

Some of those roasts can be pretty politically incorrect. This might just be the final straw for a comedy club in Ann Arbor.
boom roasted

That was my first thought, Jeff Ross in Ann Arbor?
But I think this is a great idea.
February 18th, 2021 at 10:35 AM ^
Wow, how many underage girls did you need to land Jeff Ross?

Hot take - Involve Ace in this roast and proceeds will be 4x.
February 18th, 2021 at 2:23 PM ^
lol nice
Ace for sure could not take any type of roast.

I imagine Seth's roast will bomb harder than the Great Halifax Explosion

Seriously, from what I've heard from comedians talking during the pandemic is that Zoom shows are really hard - you don't get to hear the laughs from the audience, and so the timing is thrown off. A roast may work best, since all the people listed, from Jeff Ross to Holly Anderson, can be on to give that live reaction to the speaker. Great job for trying and best of luck.
Will there be a replay option? I can't make it that night but would still like to donate and hear it.
Wondering about a replay option as well.
I'm happy to buy a ticket if there is an option to watch a recorded version. Very slim chance I'll be back home by the time this thing starts.

FYI to Brian, Seth, etc.: Ace has blocked tons of people (hundreds? thousands?) from viewing your tweets about this and other things on the MGoBlog twitter. I think I liked an Ant Wright tweet one time years ago to earn my blocking.
Seems like this is really shitty business. Blocking potential customers because of some weird twitter feud from years ago.

Anyone remember Laugh Track? At the Michigan Union, I think on Wednesday nights. Admission $1 for students. Bob Sagat, Dave Coulier and Jeff Daniels all performed there, along with lower tier comedians and plenty of students. Of course it being the 80s no one carded you either. Great idea Seth, happy to support comedy in Ann Arbor!

Love this place! Don't want to see it go.
Hoping for later airing / access. I paid my money, followed the prompts, and got bupkis..I don’t mind the money: it’s a donation for a good cause. Plus, chances are good That failure to connect was my fault. Still, it would be nice to see it sometime.
