One Frame At A Time: Michigan State
My goodness, the levels to this one. You have Tarik Black's initial flex, the theatrical shock at the taunting flag, and the slow turn to Josh Gattis, who Black somehow senses is right behind him. Then Jim Harbaugh emerges from the depths of the sideline and, well, he's not pleased. Gattis appears more resigned to the whims of the refs. This isn't a GIF; it's a three-act play.
[After THE JUMP: speaking of tragedies, MSU tried to football.]
THE FULL ALBUM
I overdid the post-ND GIFs post, which was a memory-eating monster, so instead of cramming 20-30 embeds into this one, I'm going to link everything outside the top ten. There's so much good stuff, though, that I still wanted to rank beyond ten. Finally, the people have spoken, and the voting stays.
THE TOP 20(-ISH)
20. Hutchinson Dispatches Runner, Towel
19. Brian Lewerke Four-Yard Rush
18. Lavert Hill PBU/Foreshadowing
17. Harbaugh/Patterson Celebration
16. Mason Drills Panasiuk + Panasiuk Walk of Shame
15. Ambry Thomas Pick
14. Nico Collins TD + Nico Collins Truck
13. Cornelius Johnson Oh Wide Open
12. The State of the Rivalry
11. Stormtrooper Victory Dance
10. Wait, Is That...
...a yellow Yoshi?
9. Paul at Home
The attention to detail on the pants is magnificent.
Also: Paul takes the field and Paul celebrates with the students.
8. Shatter Machine
That's quite a price to pay for zero yards.
7. Cass Tech DPJ
This is what his high school games looked like. This guy posted the Bunyan pose shot, something FOX failed to show or replay, which is criminal.
6. Punt Shatter Machine
The Hudson-Partridge hug is the cherry on top here.
5. Boss Comin'
Boss must've looked serious.
4. Sadtonio
Yeah, there's more. And more. Also Dantonio getting lost in the matrix.
3. Bye
McGrone's jersey number matching Michigan's point total is extremely good, in my opinion.
2. FLEX GONE RIGHT
Great. Teams. Taunt.
FRAMES OF THE GAME: FLEX GONE WRONG
Poor Tarik.

Yeah, whoever said Black's penalty was because he didn't give the ball immediately to the official is full of shit. He flexes for about a half second, then immediately flips the ball to the official.
Yes I get there's an official running up in the background calling for the ball. You see this all day every Saturday, the players do a thing then flip it to another official other than the one right next to them. The penalty call was atrocious.
November 19th, 2019 at 2:58 PM ^
Seriously one of the worst calls I have ever seen. I really don’t get it unless the ref has bias. It was not directed at any player. It was quick and in motion and did not by any pertinent measure delay the ball transfer.
Not much different than a 1st down or fist pump or much of anything. That could be a game changer and Harbaugh is correct it needs to be understood and explained.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
You will not find a more polite flex in college football this season. Referee wanted to make it about himself rather than the game.
We need Artificial Intelligence reffing these games as soon as possible.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:44 PM ^
Yeah, AI is probably flawless ?
November 19th, 2019 at 5:37 PM ^
No one has ever, nor will anyone in the future ever, ever listen to a grown man who uses emojis.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:57 PM ^
You want Skynet? That's how you get Skynet....
November 19th, 2019 at 3:38 PM ^
I don't know if anybody has mentioned this, but just three plays later, Sean McKeon catches a 27 yard pass on third and 20, jumps up and makes a first down signal while holding the ball, and tosses the ball to the back judge.
If Black's penalty was for holding the ball and making a shape with his arms, then McKeon should have been penalized for the exact same issue--holding the ball and making a shape with his arms. Since he wasn't, then Black's penalty was either (a) because he made an illegal shape with his arms and McKeon made a legal shape with his arms, (b) a bad call on Black, or (c) a bad no-call on McKeon.
The other possibility is that maybe there's something that would cause the officials to be quicker to call Black for a taunting penalty than McKeon, but I can't think of anything.
November 19th, 2019 at 4:09 PM ^
I remember that and my stomach dropped when he made the first down arm shape, thinking that it was another flaggable arm shape.
November 19th, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
Funny thing was Bell running up to him and pushing his arm down.
November 19th, 2019 at 2:47 PM ^
Cass Tech DPJ needs to include the subsequent shot of Harbaugh saying "Wow!"
November 19th, 2019 at 2:48 PM ^
I will fight anyone not voting for Boss Comin'. That was hysterical.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:07 PM ^
It was hysterical, yes, but Cass Tech DPJ was a thing of beauty
November 19th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
The Hudson-Partridge hug is the cherry on top.
Even better: just before the hug, Hudson mimes a punt, and Partridge mines a block.
November 19th, 2019 at 7:26 PM ^
I think you misinterpreted that. He points up asking for the jump hip bump, but the dude in the visor thought Hudson meant him. It was obviously meant for Partridge. That is my favorite part of that gif and why it got my vote.
November 19th, 2019 at 7:34 PM ^
I just loved everything about it, they had to have 1] worked on that all week 2] saw it on film or both. They both knew it was going to happen.
November 19th, 2019 at 2:55 PM ^
On the Black .gif, I enjoy the Big Ten chain gang's reaction to the ref also. Even that guy is like "WTF?"
November 19th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
If you go broader than that just look at the look of puzzlement on everybody's face. Everybody freezes like an alien spacecraft just landed and then Harbaugh emerges seemingly out of nowhere just pissed at everybody in the general vicinity. Great, great gif.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:25 PM ^
Actually, my take is that Jim is kind of chill, thinking "Hey, what's going on?" and then learns the devastating news.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
I stand corrected. That is more accurate after watching it again.
November 19th, 2019 at 4:46 PM ^
Newsome's face cracks me up too. Confusion and then disgust.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:20 PM ^
He was mad he had to walk all that way and now was gonna have to walk partway back.
November 19th, 2019 at 2:56 PM ^
If nothing else, Dantonio has made Michigan value Paul again. I always thought it was hilarious that hideous trophy never saw the light of day at either school. You had to be a hardcore fan to even know it existed.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
Dantonio didn't make us value Paul again. It's for the first time. Playing dress up with it is fun.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:26 PM ^
I always thought it was hilarious that hideous trophy never saw the light of day at either school.
Sparty always paraded him around. We were the ones who kept it in the locker room.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Anything showing a Sadtonio. I especially like the Happybaugh/Sadtonio split.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
How did they get the pants on Paul Bunyan? Velcro?
November 19th, 2019 at 3:25 PM ^
Paul Bunyan puts his pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else.
November 19th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
If you're thinking the base prevents normal pants donning, Paul (and his axe) comes off the base.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:41 PM ^
thank you!
November 19th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
Paul would look great with a big ass ear of corn under those maize pants.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:19 PM ^
can i get a show of e-hands on who is in favor of getting rid of that stupid banner and putting one of these great shots (or other great ones from ND, maryland, etc) up instead?
November 19th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
YES! My choice is DPJ in flight, across the length of the banner.
November 19th, 2019 at 3:39 PM ^
I'm also not fond of the recent obsession with Pit Bull.
November 19th, 2019 at 6:12 PM ^

November 19th, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
I voted for CoJo Oh Wide Open. I'm hoping to see a LOT more of that in future games (this season and beyond).
November 19th, 2019 at 3:34 PM ^
Sadtonio all day. Glad to see him eating shit finally haha!
November 19th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
Actually what happened to the two state players that roughed their own punter?? A definite Sparty Nooo moment!!
November 19th, 2019 at 3:36 PM ^
So many great choices. I picked McGrone waving goodbye. Such epic disrespekt...
November 19th, 2019 at 3:38 PM ^
I would like to see Sadtonio, There's More. And more. together!! Just played as a loop!
November 19th, 2019 at 4:22 PM ^
Runyan said he took Panasiuk for a ride 20 yards downfield. Anyone have a link to that?
November 19th, 2019 at 4:23 PM ^
The Hutchinson towel toss is underrated
November 19th, 2019 at 4:43 PM ^
I haven’t had a WTF moment like that since Karan Higdon fell forward and got an offensive holding call. Refs are really killing this game.
November 19th, 2019 at 8:09 PM ^
Phantom DPI vs ND and phantom OPI vs Penn State?
November 19th, 2019 at 4:49 PM ^
Side note: the photo on this post makes me smile. Bros, nerds, coeds of different shapes and sizes and colors.
That's the Michigan Difference.
November 19th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
On the longer Charbonnet run, Mason destroys a guy at the line, gets up and leaps over Charbonnet and knocks down two MSU players.
Edit: so many awesomeness in this play. Bredeson and Runyan blow out Panasuik 2 yards off the LOS and Runyan pancakes him. Bredeson combos downfield and goes and pancakes a LB. Ruiz reaches the DT (with a help from his slant) and seals him away. Mason scares a LB into pancaking himself and flips over him. Black comes from across the field to lay a mean crack on the safety. Charbonnet trucks the FS. And then Mason comes flying in at the end to knock two more MSU defenders down.
Also, Levert probably could have scored but chose to flex instead. I'm ok with this.
November 19th, 2019 at 6:10 PM ^
Great find - reminds me of Jehu Chesson going bowling against ND.
November 20th, 2019 at 4:24 AM ^
Awesome! Thanks for posting that!
November 20th, 2019 at 11:46 AM ^
If Mason doesn't make to the NFL as a FB, he destined for a legendary career as a pro wrestler. That was classic "clearing the ring" Ol' JR style. First a Lou Thesz press on the initial guy, then once he rolls out of the ring, he goes for the double lariat on the next two guys. The only thing missing was Mason running over to the ring ropes and thrashing against them while flexing or primal screaming.
I'll say it, Ben Mason = "The Ultimate Warrior II"
November 20th, 2019 at 5:58 PM ^
Saw that live and was relieved there was no penalty for that bit at the end.
November 19th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
It looks like Hill flexes with one arm and then immediately regrets it and tried to turn it into some robotic helmet slapping routine to avoid a flag.
