MGoPodcast 11.3: Twelve Angry Men
It's the bye week, and that means hoops preview edition. Except we have to laugh about MSU first, duh.

[After THE JUMP: A dozen done dirty]
1. Backcourt & Sparty No!
starts at 1:00
The Sparty No!ment: give up a Vinny Testaverde Techmo Bowl first down, get a gift PI call, unnecessary fire drill field goal they make but there's a 12th guy on the field, misses the second by lots, complains about officiating: CALL 9-1-2! Shape of the program could change radically. Up-tempo? Turnovers? Posting? Auto-benching no more? Who are we? X's team, obviously. X should learn a left hook. The two is a ???? but we're guessing it's Franz despite being huge for the two because that seems the most promising lineup. DDJ and Nunez had disappointing starts for guys with supposedly great shots. Bajema is a Caris-ian X factor.
2. Frontcourt
starts at 32:45
What's Livers, and what happens when he tries to basketball more because he seems to be a pretty good basketball player. His pull-up is a good bad shot. His defense is statistically Matthews-like but not Matthews-like. Michigan needs him on the court as much as possible. The four is Brandon Johns or Livers, pending a big leap from Brandon Johns that could mean a lot for this team. Certainly he's an athlete, numbers shot up, is jacked, decent shooter in high school, what does Juwan want to do with a GRIII type? If it's rebounding and athleticism Johns is in business. Colin Castleton: Reuvers-style four? Certainly a Wagner-style five when Teske is off the floor, which is like never. Second to Bol Bol in high school at swatting. What do you want Teske's foul rate to be? They also have a 6'10" guy from Columbia (not THAT Columbia).
3. Big Ten Hoops Outlook
starts at 59:46
Hot takes of the week. The conference looks weird: big one and everyone else. Michigan State gets back Winston and Tillman, the end. Aaron Henry looks like he's going to be a player too. Torvik has a mess after that: Purdue (#7 nationally), return Haarms, no Carsen Edwards, Eastern as a PG..this is way overrating Purdue? Turgeon's coaching is now underrated; time to take the Terps seriously. Illinois: if Dosunmu isn't one of the best players in the conf it's an upset. OSU has a point guard. Torvik has PSU #19 in the country but uh… Wisconsin's scorer is…oh we're going to hate this team. Michigan shouldn't be behind a team replacing its entire offense and a team that's like How do you offense? Next team on this list is Rutgers after a disaster of an offseason—Torvik loves Geo Baker maybe? Indiana bad but they added Joey Brunk. His Hoop-Lens on/off splits are incredible:
4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie Mac
starts at 1:36:15
The John L. Smith special. El Assico ends in the most El Assico way possible after they build weird scores with 2's and 3's. Minnesota lucky not to be 0-3 against three cupcakes. OSU murderates Indiana, who loses Penix, OSU looks complete. Penn State plays an MSU game with Pitt, as Pitt does. Narduzzi went for a field goal down 7, 4th and goal from the one, burned a timeout….WTF!?! Missed it of course. Pitt also outgained them. Maryland's offense fizzles out behind a bad OL. Purdue bloops out to TCU.

I am here for this lineup:
The two is a ???? but we're guessing it's Teske despite being huge for the two because that seems the most promising lineup.
Probably meant to type Franz, but I'm already talking myself into SG Teske.

The Patriots were, by far, the worst team in TSB. Tecmo Steve Grogan was the OG arm punter.

Seth, a minor correction - the song from Sesame Street is called “Pinball Number Count,” and was performed by The Pointer Sisters (an underrated group who crisscrossed country and R&B). The segments came with these incredible psychedelic visuals, and some excellent work on the Fender Rhodes piano and steel drums.

thanks

Basketball is too nuanced for most to assess well. This is an unscripted game that requires split-second after split-second adjustments by everyone. This team will be a very interesting challenge for the newly assembled coaching staff. At this writing I am guessing that the defense will be adequate but I do not know where the scoring is going to come from.
September 16th, 2019 at 8:33 AM ^
I hope Howard does well so we can keep getting basketball content from Brian in September. If JH does poorly, you'll have a hard time getting Brian to talk basketball in February.

It is tough to blame him. When our teams shit the bed, it is hard to stay aggressively passionate.
Michigan basketball will be fine though. It is tough for me to see them anywhere but top 3 in the conference. Too much great defense, and Livers will explode IMO.
September 16th, 2019 at 10:17 PM ^
Right, but...this is his job.
September 16th, 2019 at 8:41 AM ^
I think the OTHER Columbia may be Colombia, but I could be missing something. Considerable amount of latent talent on this hoops squad; will be a great early test of the new staff to see what they do with it. Practices start shortly, right?

Ace made a great point that I hadn't heard anywhere else. After MSU finally decided to kick the FG, they could have spiked the ball again and then get set up.
September 16th, 2019 at 10:24 AM ^
Are you allowed to spike the ball when the clock isn't running? I've never seen that. Seems like that could be grounding. They could obviously chuck it out of bounds over a receivers head.
September 16th, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
I guess we'd have to ask the rules committee. I assumed whatever exception allowed for spiking didn't necessitate that the clock was running. But maybe it does.
I am sure that in that moment of hesitation they had no chance to properly communicate to spike the ball. They were prepared to run a different play before he settled on going for the field goal. So it's probably moot.
September 16th, 2019 at 12:48 PM ^
Even if it is grounding, it's a spot foul and loss of down. So it would have been 3rd and 11 which shouldn't have made a difference.
September 16th, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
5 yards seemed to make a big difference to carrot top. Who knows if 2 or 3 would have caused him problems. Probably him standing around thinking about it for a few minutes was the biggest issue on the second kick.
September 16th, 2019 at 10:55 PM ^
I don't know why you would need a running clock to make a spike legal.
September 16th, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
Really great podcast. Excited that Johns can take the next step and I think we're underrated again this year

Twelve angry men.
I see what you did there. :-)
Maybe that was obvious.. but I'm slow and just got it.
September 16th, 2019 at 11:43 AM ^
The jury is still out on how many people got it.
September 16th, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
That Sparty game was perfect for a day when Michigan wasn't playing. I needed my fix, and I got more than I could have ever asked for. At least TWELVE TIMES what I would have expected.
September 17th, 2019 at 6:53 AM ^
Dude, this can't have been your first Sparty No! if you've been around here since 12/04/2008.
September 16th, 2019 at 2:44 PM ^
re Franz v Mo comparisons, I expect Franz to be the better all-around baller. Entering my 3rd decade as a baseball coach and I've repeatedly seen the younger/est sibling(s) be the better player - chalk it up to the "chasing" effect, i.e., trying to keep up with your older sibling despite being younger/smaller.
September 17th, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
Note to Ace and Jamie: the other shanked punt you were remembering was in 2016 Michigan at Northwestern (same game as the Dileo slide). NW is punting out of its own end zone, and a seven yard shank results in Michigan first down at the 10. Borges couldn’t coordinate M into the end zone, so he settles for a Gibbons-3.
