WSB commit throws 10th no-hitter of the season.

The Freep is reporting that Meghan Beaubien, a sophomore pitcher at Monroe St. Catholic Central, threw a no-no in the semis against Pinconning yesterday, striking out 16, which is her average. She is 28-3 on the season and is the Michigan Gatorade player of the year. Pinconning coach, Fred Yanoski was impressed. "We knew she was good coming in. Her off-speed was great, and she pitched each hitter differently each time around, so it was very tough to adjust to." Can't wait to see her in the Maize and Blue. Edit: changed recruit to commit.

I've actually met her as her mother is our regional business analyst, handling much of the invoicing and billing for the work done by our contract overhead and underground crews, and like most of us there, the kids have been in the building at some point to visit.

Very impressive indeed. I believe she is the Michigan Gatorade Player Of The Year and, if I remember correctly, she holds the Monroe County record for career strikeouts.

Yep, Leah Crockett from New York is coming in next season. Not as heralded as Beaubien, and probably not in line to get much playing time next season if any (more of a longer term prospect), but you never know. The catcher is Alex Sobczak of Farmington Hills Mercy who will probably start at catcher next season IMO.

Great player and I've heard she also helps out with a ton of softball camps for younger kids in the area. She'll make a great member of the Michigan family.

Softball recruiting, nice change of pace. Not quite as huge of a deal as it sounds because D1 pitchers usually dominate high school especially in michigan leagues. I know in my younger years we had a pitcher who went to michigan state and she threw quite a few no-no's in high school and our church slow-pitch league just plain wasn't fair. However 10 in one season is still pretty damn impressive

you can bet Coach Hutch is in attendance.  My brother-in-law (he's on the Caledonia HS softball staff) told me he saw Hutch watching intently during their win over Farmington Hills Mercy on Thursday.  He said he also saw MSU's coach there, talking Hutch's ears off.

Just speculation on my part, but Caledonia has a freshman who bears watching as a potential Michigan recruit in both softball and basketball.  She's that good already as a 9th-grader.  Caledonia, BTW, is in the Division 1 Finals today vs. Warren Regina---GO CAL!!!

Thanks for the info. I hope that Caledonia player turns out to be a good one, but I can just about guarantee that Hutch's attention was on Alex Sobczak of Mercy, who has signed with Michigan. She played third base all season, but switched to catcher in the tourney because that's where she will play (and likely start) at Michigan next season. One of the best offensive prospects in the history of the state.

(or anyone else here on MGoBlog) going to any of the State Finals today?  I'm not, but that Caledonia game was scheduled to start about 15 minutes ago.  With the off-and-on rain throughout the state today, I don't know if they are on schedule with the Championships, but any possible delays wouldn't surprise me at all, as radar showed an hour or so ago that there was rain in the Lansing area.

I'll not post the name of that Caledonia freshman, but if you're there, I'm sure it'll be easy to figure out who she is.

Yeah, it was ridiculously easy to figure that out with a simple Google search. Which is why I couldn't understand why he didn't post her name.

In any case, she is one of the top basketball prospects in Michigan in the 2018 class, but I haven't heard (yet) of any Michigan interest in her. Seems like she might be more likely to play softball in college.

it is Samantha Gehrls that I was referring to earlier.  I decided not to refer to her by name simply because of what you mentioned, Raoul: there hasn't been any public mention of Michigan recruiting her for either sport.

Based on what my brother-in-law has told me about which sport she might pursue in college, though, it's really a toss-up at this stage whether she continues on in softball or in basketball at the college level.  At this early in her high school career, though, she looks like she has the ability and drive to pursue either (or even both) successfully.

One other thing, and you probably already know this: while, yes, she's early in high school, recruiting-wise, this isn't early at all. Michigan already has two 2018 softball commits, and the trend especially in softball (more so than women's basketball) is toward very early commitments. That doesn't mean she can't take her time if she wants, but I'll bet she already has a number of schools recruiting and some offers as well.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago in a different softball thread, but she led her team to the district championship by pitching two perfect games in one day. The team she faced in the final put up 20 runs in the semifinal, and word was she struck out every batter she faced.

Presumably she's facing very good competition in the state tourney, so I'm happy to hear that she is just as dominant. I think she could be Jordan Taylor good at Michigan, maybe even better.

By the way, I will have a 2016 season preview type thing (in website form) up in not too long.

Very exciting news, thanks for posting!  A few years down the road before she'll be wearing Maize & Blue, but even so.  The improvement in offenses notwithstanding, softball is still a sport where one or two elite pitchers make a huge difference.  Knowing we've got the potential for one coming in down the line is huge.

Beaubien just hit a home run in her first at bat of the championship game to put her team up 2-0. This is like if you took Lauren Haeger and put her in Michigan division 3 high school softball.

Just a question. Why include the "w" in wsb? Why shorten it at all?? Softball is known to be a woman's game. It's like saying we have a men's football recruit.
