Gut punch. Feel so bad for him.   Very thankful he came back this year and make such a contribution.  Hope he gets a chance to play a little more with a deep run.  More important of course, hope it heals right.

Query: under the special COVID eligibility rules, could he play another season if he wanted to? I realize he probably doesn’t want to delay things any longer, but I’m curious if that’s an option.

Fuck me, just thinking about the postseason being canceled last year and then not being able to play again this year... so shitty that these things happened for his final two upperclassman years at UM.

At least he played in a NCAA title game, won a BTT and got to cut down the nets after beating Sharty this year. Great career

In some way, this reminds me of when Cincinnati’s Kenyon Martin broke his leg during his conference tournament in March 2000. He’d been The Sporting News Player of the Year for a team that was 28-2 before the post-season and was expected to be a one seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Because of Kenyon Martin's injury, Cincinnati, then coached by Bob Huggins, fell to a 2-seed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament and after beating UNC-Wilmington in its first game, lost its second-round game to 7-seed Tulsa and its coach Bill Self.

The difference here is that Isaiah Livers played through the injury for several weeks without realizing that he was making it progressively worse, until it became too late for him to continue. It’s reasonable to think that his injury was the major reason for Michigan losing three of its past five games. (I'll accept that a better play call for the final play of the Ohio State game yesterday might've changed those results.)

We can only wonder how Michigan's fortunes might've changed had Livers gone for an MRI just before Michigan's season was paused from January 23 through February 13 and had used that time for rehab.

It’s also hardly a surprise that due to Livers’ injury and the lack of a suitable replacement for him, none of the early predictors expect Michigan to advance to the Final Four and there might be some who expect Michigan to go out before for the Sweet Sixteen. Sad ending to what had been a special season before March.

Last year, a writer for The Sporting News speculated about what might’ve occurred had Martin not have broken his leg and had Cincinnati gone to win the national championship. LINK The team that won the 2000 NCAA championship shall not be mentioned here.
