Wisconsin - A closer look

Submitted by ijohnb on
Only real "quality win" is Minnesota on the road. Michigan State at home was somewhat deceiving I believe as MSU was in free fall mode at the time. Purdue was impressive in the decisiveness of the win, but they followed it up just sneaking by Indiana much as we did. Indiana put up 28 points against the Badgers as did Minnesota, so their defense is likely not as strong as the Purdue shutout would indicate. Wisconsin, though rock solid in the trenches, prefers to stay in the trenches, and has always been susceptible to fast paced, speed based offenses. Wisconsin is a tough place to play and "Senior day" never helps things as it ussually breeds an inspirational performance. However, Michigan was able to move the ball very consistently against Wisconsin in the second half last year and Koger was very productive. Further, I just don't see Wisconsin as a team that will be able to spread us out with a lot of different looks, hopefully leading to our linebackers developing a comfort level and the safeties being able to play more of a contain style of football. Lastly, given the disparity in Purdue's ability to compete with UW and UM, it may be virtually impossible for Wisconsin to not be over-confident coming into this game. A week ago, I thought this game spelled doom, but upon further review, this game may allow Michigan to rely on their few strengths and kind of "hang around" until crunch time. This defense struggles in a lot of areas, but I kind of think that the throwback, run heavy, pro-sets used almost exclusively by the Badgers may actually be a welcomed breather. Go Blue.

Wisconsin's performances are definitely mixed. They, like Purdue, are a tough team to figure out. Ever since the Molkless Indiana game I have felt the same: this team could win, or lose, any game it plays.

Seeing a team that is not going spread us out is a welcome change. Wisco is not going to try to throw the ball all over - their style of pounding the ball worries me a lot less than a spread team.

does throw a lot more than those of the past. Lets also remember that UW loves the tight end more than 1997 Brian Griese loved Jerame Tuman after faking the stretch play to Clarence and heading out on a naked boot. I was at the 2005 fiasco, when our D was on the field the whole game because we couldn't run the ball. Wisco couldn't move the ball on us at all unless they were throwing screen passes to their tight end (Owen Daniels?). It was brutal. Lets hope our linebackers and saftties can cover their tight ends.... oh, wait a minute....Lets hope we can outscore them.

That the conclusion of your analysis is correct and that Wisconsin's one dimensional, traditional tendencies continue. I hate the fucking Badgers! We are due for a win on the road. This Saturday seems as good of a game to get it.

The badgers are like every other year. Run,run, run behind a bunch of lardasses. They have no speed and Bielema is an overrated douchebag. Our offense should be able to score 50 on these clowns. There really couldn't be an easier team to gameplan against. GO BLUE!
