because Alvarez wouldn't pay them. That could always be an issue when you promote a football coach to AD. He might have strong ideas about what coaches should be paid based on his own experience, rather than the current landscape.

ehhhh

the western half the of the country is different then the east in this way. If you drew a line from California's southern border, you'd hit South Carolina while it's northern border would hit New Jersey. When your political units operate on that level of scale, your whole concept of "closeness" becomes shifted. Regional subcultures out there are far less defined... there's more of a general sense of "westerness", anywhere with dramatic mountain vistas be they in a desert or a rainforest can feel like home. Parts of Colorado are closer to Michigan than they are to the coast and yet the average Coloradan likely feels far more affinity with a Californian than a Michigander, meanwhile the Michigander is unlikely to have much in common a New Yorker in spite of being geographic near-neighbors.

One of the things that ties the west together, and which might go a ways in explaining Gary Andersen's decision, is LDS presence. Oregon has 7 times the number of Mormons Wisconsin does in spite of having a far smaller population. Hell, Corvallis (pop. 55,000) has the same number of LDS churches as Madison (pop. 250,000). Cultural fit, blahblahblah

Thing is, Wisconsin knows that just as much as we do, and they might have timing on their side. If they've got a few candidates that a relatively even in their eyes, they might give an offer with a deadline attached that might be problematic give our (Harbaugh) timeline. Not that this would work, and I'm sure they wouldn't do this to a candidate high on our board.  But if you were the OC at Ohio State and Wisconsin gave you an exploding offer while U of M said "wait til we hear from Harbaugh in January" you'd certainly have to think about it.

I agree UM is a better job. However, when it comes to someone like a top coordinator, I think it is extremely likely Wisconsin could snatch up someone Michigan had their eyes on while we wait for Harbaugh to decide. If both Michigan and Wisconsin offer? Well yeah, one most likely chooses Michigan. However, so long as we are waiting on an answer from Harbaugh, a hot young coordinator or coach looking to move up isn't going to sit around and wait for a potential offer from Michigan if Wisco comes calling now. I agree it's unlikely this has an impact, but in the case of a guy like Herman, it definitely might.

Well, I will say that I would not have expected Gary Andersen to leave Wisconsin any time soon, and especially not for Oregon State. That is pretty shocking.

Someone mentioned Pelini above - I thought it had been reported that he took the Youngstown State job, which if true nullifies the prospect of Wisconsin making their game with Nebraska a rivalry via an epic troll move in hiring Pelini.
