Will a 6-1 start next year unite this family?

Submitted by lilpenny1316 on
I started pouring over next years schedule and thanks to a relatively easy non-conference schedule, especially if J. Clausen goes pro, it does not take much imagination for us to be 6-1 or possibly even 7-0 heading into the game at Penn State. Will that finally mend some wounds and move us towards reconciliation with each other by being bowl eligible so early, or will the curse of being 'MICHIGAN' lead to people saying that these are games we should win every year? If that won't do it, what do you think will make us "All in for RichRod?"

We've lost 7 games in a row to BCS competition and you're asking about a hypothetical 6-1 start next year? I'll be ecstatic if we're just improving game by game throughout the entire season next year.

I'm alread "All in" for this team. I am just focussing on the season at hand now which is the recruiting season. A good finish to that would be great.

Completely agree - RR will go a long way toward regaining my full confidence in him if he has a strong finish in recruiting. That is what I am worried about now, but what will impact future seasons: the potential vicious cycle of bad seasons + resulting bad recruiting classes = more bad seasons. Please dont let our MIchigan slip into this spiral.

I don't think you'll see most fans "all in for Rich Rod" next year unless we're in serious contention for the conference title next year, and beat two of ND, MSU, and OSU (and if there's a loss there, it had better be close). So, a 6-1 start would be encouraging, but I think, particularly after this year, a lot of people will sit back and wait to see the final record. 8-4 will help, 9-3 would probably get everyone to relax, and 10-2 probably gets people all-in. More likely, I think it'll take a few years for people to get all-in, as next year may see us at 8-4 or 9-3, but not contending for the title, etc. With that slow but steady progress, all-in will take longer for many. Me? I'm all-in now.

RR will have his opportunity next year but unless the team gets at least 9 regular season wins I don't see him staying in A2 any longer. Even at 9-3 he would still have a sub 500 record as the Wolverines coach. There is too much discontent around the program to let that continue. I think we'll see some definite coaching changes this off season and hope they can get the D turned around. If not it'll most likely be happy tails for all involved and another 2 years of rebuilding. It's going to be a long next decade for M fans.

It's hard to say for sure what will happen next year, but I see 2 - 10. I think this team will regress in terms of wins and losses. Connecticut will be a very upper class team next year with a senior quarterback. I don't see us winning at Notre dame. Our two wins probably come in the non-conference with Bowling Green and UMass. We have to travel to Indiana next season, that's probably a loss. Who else can we beat on our schedule? This team only improved very marginally this season. Why would we expect any big improvement next year? Basically we switched out Utah from last season for a guaranteed win against Delware State. We managed to erase a loss against Toledo by beating both MAC teams we played instead of losing to only one. Even some of the results were similar late in the season from this season to last, such as the Purdue game. Last year we lost to Purdue 48-42. This year we lost 38-36. Last year Illinois dominated us. This year they also dominated us. Where is the improvement. Our starting quarterback has regressed into a turnover machine. Sometimes quarterbacks get better, sometimes they do not, but how can you forecast real improvement in the QB position? Maybe a couple of our new recruits can turn into solid starters right away, like Marlin Jackson and Leon Hall were, and solidify the extremely pourous secondary, but you can't reasonably forecast that I don't think.

So you think a true freshmen QB that turns the ball over more as he faces better competition is a reason that he won't progress at all next year? That is an interesting take on Forcier. Or maybe, and I know this is crazy, but hear me out, maybe a QB jumping from high school to college football and asked to start from day 1 would get better after an entire offseason of practices, weight training, and film watching. I know it is unheard of, but maybe college football is not only tougher on the body but tougher on the mind when you jump from high school to college. Although I am sure you are right - QBs never get better from freshman to sophomore year.

Possible, but HIGHLY unprobable. It would take some of the strangest strings of events I can even imagine for us to go totally winless outside of the two tomato cans. Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana are all winnable, not necessarily locks, but winnable to a chance that I have no problem saying that we WILL win one of those games. I can't quite say we will win 2/3 (although I believe we will), but I cannot come up with such a horrific string of events that we'd lose all three. I do not even want to think of such a thing at this current juncture, instead, I'll stay the course and focus on the 1,000 points of light. EDIT: I need to study opposing offenses/defenses next season before I can go too much further. Those won't be clear for a few more months, hence the rather weak predictions from me.

but didn't we essentially come within one play of beating Iowa and MSU on the road this year? I'm not saying we beat them, but I venture to say Michigan will be favored against UConn, UMass, BG, MSU and probably Indiana. I wouldn't count on 6-1, but 5-2 seems reasonable if there's the usual year-to-year improvement. Sigh -- I'm just not in a mood to wait until September.

This year they started 4-1 and ended 1-6 Starting 6-1 but finishing 1-4 or whatever will still be taxing on the unbelievers.

Given this year, a good start against a week schedule will still leave a lot of people with questions/doubts. The start is important, but the end more so. RR has to show improvement as the season goes on and beat Big 10 teams/finish in the top 1/2 to 1/3 of the league. I expect these things to happen as next years team shouldn't have to start the number of inexperienced players that his first teams have, but only a successful year, not a successful start, will quell the skeptics.

i'm as optimistic as the next fan about 2010. however, let's not forget how awful our defense was this season. if we can get improvement on this side of the ball to about a ranking in the 50's nationally for pts and total yards against then we have a shot. nd is very winnable if they lose weis, jimmy and tate. psu loses clark, maybe royster and several impact players on defense. the rest of the big ten shouldn't scare us at all. i actually think, along with osu, msu will be our toughest game. cousins had a rough last game but has a good deal of potential and they're young running backs are very talented. i set the baseline before this year at 6 wins and i'm setting this at 7.5 wins for next season (not counting the bowl game). yes, i realize you can't win 0.5 games. however, 7 wins just seems too low and 8 seems like to big of a number right now. i'll prob push this to 8 though as i inevitably buy in to all the offseason hype.

I was on the 6-6 and approaching 7-5, although I never quite got there, during the 4-0 start. So not quite that good/pessimistic during the high point. Trade ND for Purdue and I'd been just about spot on during the preseason. My thoughts on WMU/MSU were close enough to toss up that you could count those as switched as well, but I don't feel like my initial thoughts were too far off. And in fairness, I think 2 other people took 5-7 in the preseason thread.

Good post. My only qualm with what you have stated here is that I believe PSU has been a bit of a recruiting juggernaut the last few years and will likely be able to reload and still be a team that is, in total, more talented than ours. Otherwise though, spot on.

I'm a fan of Michigan football. My allegiance does not change simply because my team wins or loses each week. It's clear to me that Rich Rod is recruiting well, is addressing the fact that defensive recruiting from 2005-2007 was a complete farce, and is developing a VERY, VERY good team that will return Michigan to the top levels of college football. I'm fully in and cannot wait for the team to be successful. For those who waver simply because a young team of 18-22 year olds with obvious deficiencies didn't do as well as Tom Hagan demands they do every week, well, I don't know what to tell you. It's easy to be a Michigan fan when the team is 10-2 and everything is going well. If you are a real fan of this team, though, your faith does not waver when the machine is being re-built. GO BLUE.

We have to go through this painful period in order to REALLY succeed. The changes being implemented are not merely cosmetic, but HUGE. And they are laying the foundation for success on a deep level. I am licking my chops looking forward to what this will bring to the UM - OSU game, even next year. If we could play as well as we did last Saturday, the future is indeed bright enough for me!

...of a national title will be a disapointment. This is MEEECHIGAN goddamnit! We must run the table, we must go undefeated, we must beat up on ND, Sparty and tOSU and we must wipe the shit-eating grin off Urban Meyer's face in the Title Game with Devin Gardner's jockstrap. By the end of next year RichRod will have had 3 full years and 2 full recruiting classes to get it done, wasn't this why he was hired? Don't even get me started on Paul Johnson! And I don't want to hear about the defensive cupboard being bare - this is the spread and shred! We don't need a damn defense if we're putting up 45+ like we were supposed to. All I'm saying is if he can't do it this year with 19 freshman who have had all summer to learn the system, he'd for goddamn sure better do it next year! We are Michigan, we are elite and elite programs don't have "down years"...I don't want to hear this 6-1 bullshit! *sarcasm (for those who cannot "interpret")

Edit: to jg1221 (missed the right reply button) Some sleight of hand: "If you are a real fan of this team, though, your faith does not waver when the machine is being re-built." Sorry, but I think this is BS. You are deceitfully conflating love of Michigan football with support for RR or being fully in. The two are not the same. I love Michigan football. That does not waver. My faith in the direction of the program can waiver without my level of 'fanhood' lowering. Remember that Thomas Jefferson said "DIssent is the highest form of patriotism". It is because I love this program that I question where it is going. If "fully in" means blind allegiance, then I'm out. This goes for Michigan football or whatever else.

Watched the 2nd half of UConn/ND, and Huskies looked pretty scrappy. Most of their team returns, right? This game scares me - they will be looking to knock us off in the stadium opener. I don't have this one in the "sure win" column. GO BLUE!!

November 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 AM ^

When UConn was announced as our opener for next season, at least half the MGoWorld went on a Bill-Martin-scheduling-sucks tirade. Do people really think this is a Baby Seal U type game? Did people really want some team like Florida or USC to come in just because we were opening a newly renovated stadium?? I just don't get it. Opening the season in 2010 with a loss.... I don't even want to think about people's reactions to that. UConn in the opener next year is no gimme by any stretch of the imagination.

msoccer10

November 23rd, 2009 at 12:44 PM ^

was because UConn looks like Baby seal to people who don't know much about football because they lack a history of success in football. But people who know think we could easily lose that game. It is high risk, low reward. I am still happy they didn't get a cream puff, but I agree, a lose would be a horrible way to start what will probably be a make or break year for Rodriguez.

GBOD79

November 23rd, 2009 at 9:22 PM ^

While it is true that we could easily lose the UConn game history is on RR's side. He has absolutely owned UConn in the head to head contests. So we do have that going for us. I think we also have a better team next year with more athletic ability. It should be a close game but it is winnable for us.

StephenRKass

November 23rd, 2009 at 11:14 AM ^

That kind of start would be great. But it seems to me that people are either already "all in," and willing to be patient, or they're not. Personally, I'm all in. I want to see RR have two to three more years to get things going. Regarding next year, I would be happy with 8 - 4, thrilled with 9 - 3, satisfied with 7 - 5. Also regarding next year, I would like to see at least a couple quality wins. A bigger issue than the record next year is the quality of the recruiting class. We have got to have solid recruits in the secondary and in the linebacking corps. If the in-coming class is solid, or better, great, it would seem only fair for us to wait until the 2011 campaign to give a substantive "grade" to RR. By 2011, RR will have had sufficient time to have his schemes, athletes, etc., in place. A second issue next year is the coaching on the defensive side. I feel strongly that GERG needs a minimum of one more year. If there is one area I would consider changing, it would be Hopson and the linebackers. But, regardless, the revolving door and the constant change wreak havor on the team. We forget that with the recent previous transitions (Bo to Moeller, Moeller to Carr,) you brought up someone who knew the system, knew the athletes, and who didn't bring wholesale change. The kind of changes we signed up for with RR were necessary for Michigan football to stay relevant and to compete on the national stage in this century. I am pretty irritated with all the fans who expect instant success, and instant gratification. We have been spoiled by success, and expect it to continue no matter what. It will continue, but it will take a while. It would be the worst disaster possible to gut the current coaching crew. No one in their right mind of any worthwhile caliber would even consider coming to Michigan if we fired RR or Gerg at this point. We would lose athletes, be behind in recruiting, and go down the path of Nebraska and ND. There is one other factor which I think State of Michigan homers fail to understand. Despite your love for your Alma Mater, Michigan is not the most wonderful destination on the planet, geographically or academically. We are competing for kids who can go to USC or UCLA, or stay in the south where they came from, or in the states of Ohio or Pennsylvania, if that is their home. Between the economy, and the snow and cold and grey and wet, and the proximity to Detroit, we are already operating from a disadvantage. UM has the advantage of the institutional success in football, it's facilities, it's stadium. We are still operating from a position of strength. Firing the coaches would imhe, decimate this strength.

you need to be OUT! I will always support the team. I did as I watched Carr continually misuse talent resulting in worse records than should have been. I supported the team as I watched Lloyd ignor DB and LB recruiting for the most part toward the end of his tenure. I supported the team as I watched Lloyd deemphasize the off season program. I have no question about the direction the program is headed it is just headed there with an extremely young roster that is down serious numbers in scholarship players. Should we have beat Illinois- probably and if Roundtree makes a cut and scores them Illinois' back up QB is in and win #6 is in the book. Should we have beat Purdue-probably and a bad pitch changed momentum. Then a missed extra point chipped away at the confidence a little more. That's the adventures of youth and inexperience. RR has had one recruiting class of his own. Lets see how he closes this one. He has brought in speed we have never seen and is setting the program up nicely for the future. Remember, Patience is a virtue, and if we are not back in the bowl picture next year I'll begin to have the same questions?

Arizona Blue

November 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 PM ^

there is a difference between following the program like a lemming and being all in. All in is rational support and patience in the program. all in is not blindly praising every possible aspect of the team like an ignorant fool. in a similar situation, analogous of course, the United States government does not revoke your citizenship if you do not blindly support its leaders. I believe it is perfectly legitimate, and I am fairly confident most would agree, to question the direction of the team and look to seek insight into why the team has struggled as of late (there is a difference between questioning and pure malicious dissent.) I do not think that it is fair to go ballistic every time something bad happens and to hold the team to a higher standard than they are physically and mentally capable of. I am all in. Rich Rod will get it done, and if he doesn't, I will be humbled in my personal miscalculation.

A 6-1 start in 2010 will be like a 4-0 start in 2009: a good thing as far as it goes, but not enough. Let's consider the perspective. During the Bo-Mo-Carr era, Michigan at least contended for the Big Ten title almost every year, and won at least a share of it about half the time. During that era, Michigan won fewer than 8 games only twice—and remember, until 2006 they had only 12 chances in which to do it, counting the bowl game, as opposed to 13 chances today. So if you're a Michigan fan, a season with 7 wins or less is poor; an 8-win season is disappointing; a 9-win season is merely average, and a 10-or-better season is good. During the Bo-Mo-Carr era, Michigan was hardly ever an underdog at home, and it was favored most of the time on the road. It was the very rare game that you didn't believe Michigan had a good chance to win. With that in mind, I'd say that Rodriguez needs to get to 9 wins (including a bowl game), with at least two wins over major rivals (ND, MSU, PSU, OSU), to silence his critics next year. I am not saying that anything less than that gets him fired, but if he wants to silence most of his critics, that's what he needs to do. For what it's worth, I think 6-6 and a bowl invite is the minimum result next year that gets Rodriguez back in 2011, but he'd be on awfully thin ice without at least a couple of more wins.

College football has changed, a lot, since the Bo era. You didn't have teams like TCU, Boise State, Hawaii (a few years ago), or whichever the flavor of the year team is competing head to head with the powerhouses. To judge Rich Rod (or any coach in the present) against standards of the past is brutally unfair.
