Why do you hate MSU more than OSU?

Submitted by MonkeyMan on

I have read these boards for at least 3+ years and I can definitely say that the majority of folks here hate MSU more than OSU:

There are far more threads bashing MSU than OSU

When MSU plays OSU, more people want OSU to win

I am wondering why? As far as I can see OSU has done far more damage to UM than MSU has done over the years:

OSU has cost UM many great bowl game bids, Big 10 championships, rankings

OSU takes many great recruits that might have gone to UM (MSU doesn't seem to have had much of a chance with these kids)

OSU has thoroughly humiliated UM in many games (esp. RR and Hoke)

Some here will say "because its an in-state conference rivalry" but there are many of these in CFB that do NOT produce this level of hate: Miami/FL State, Northwestern/Illinois, Baylor/Texas, Cal/Stanford, Washington/WSU, etc.

I live in C-bus and don't understand why MSU is hated so much- enlighten me.

Many of my relatives and friends went to MSU so the rivalry is more personal to me. Losing to MSU is a fucking nightmare. The gloating by MSU fans after a win makes me nearly homicidal.

Mark Dantonio. That is the sole reason I hate MSU more. I grew up hating Woody and the Bucknuts and MSU was an afterthought.

I admit that now I hate MD and MSU more now. I just don't get as worked up about Tressel or Urban because they generally keep their mouths shut.

I do respect OSU, not so much for MSU.

I don't.  Most Michigan fans don't.  Staee is little brother, an annoyance, but not deserving of actual hate.

Ohio is the debil.  They deserve all the hate.

Can we reserve hatred for things really deserving of hatred? I am a Michigan grad and life long fan, and I live in East Lansing (actually neighbors of Dantanio and Izzo). I have to put up with State BS all the time. But I distinguish between my dislike of MSU fans who hate Michigan and beings truly worthy of hatred (I'll let you fill in the blank as to who that as). Please keep sports in perspective. It's a pimple on the butt of what is truly important in our world.

I don't think most people on here root for OSU over MSU unless it benefits us like 2015. I can't speak about last year because I was at the IU game while it was going on, but most people at Michigan Stadium were asking for updates about the MSU and OSU game because MSU had kept it close, but of course pissed it away with a dumb 2 point conversion. But seriously, MSU is more of a nuisance than hate. OSU I just can't stand. No matter what they've had our number the last 15 years and it's been real old since about oh...2006. We had the game last year, they played awful until the 4th quarter and still managed to win. Fucking tired of it.

Every single MSU game I've been to, the MSU fans in the area are louts and mouth breathers, but not so much with the trash talking. Every single time I go to an OSU/UM game in A2, there is an obnoxious group of OSU fans determined to ruin the game with their trash talk...all game long. Everybody tells them to shut the fuck up, but they persist. Coincidence that it's only OSU? I think not.  They need a good humbling...or several.

If you've only been here around 3 years that might explain it.  Sparty has really only been competitive with UM the past 9 years or so.  I know that might seem like a long time for some younger folks, but relatively speaking UM has been pretty dominant over MSU for most of our history.  So, MSUs relatively recent success has been more of an annoyance than anything...something we all knew would end soon, but probably generated a lot of talk.

OSU on the other hand has been our biggest rival since the early 1900s.  UM/OSU is a rivalry that is as rich in college football as it gets.  I'd guess the overwhelmingly vast majority of UM fans dislike OSU more than Sparty because at the end of the day OSU is better than MSU historically and we traditional compete more over recruits with OSU than we do with MSU as well as have a more even rivalry with OSU than MSU.

Never understood the MSU hate since growing up they were always second fiddle. But being around OSU fans and listening to their trash day in and day out has caused me to develop an unrealistic hatred towards them.

I lived in Lansing and most of my family and HS friends are MSU fans/alumn. trash talk gets old fast when you hear it as often as I do. I only know one OSU fan and he's actually much more laid back and rational than the MSU fans in my life.

Good people but in football we're not respected, liked or looked at with anything but contempt. They all unequivocally know we are the enemy, they don't like us - the buckeye contingent universally hate us and think we take their coaches and players. It makes you stand behind the Big Blue with unparalleled conviction. We should not sell them our tickets. Now our focus is clear ... no 2 or 3 rivalries - just One - the greatest rivalry in sport - Beat the Bucks!

OSU - hate with the intensity of a million suns.

ND - hate with the intensity of a thousand suns.

MSU - hate with the intensity of a burning couch.

Up until about 10 yrs. ago, no one gave MSU much thought, until the week of the game. Then Mike Hart created the "little brother" meme. Then Michigan hired RR and Hoke, and MSU flipped the order of the Universe on its head.

Most of us have been annoyed greatly by that development and have been waiting for the natural order to be restored.

Enter Harbaugh.

Two years ago, Dantonio completed his compact with Satan and forestalled the inevitable.

Last year, the planets realigned, dogs and cats stopped living together in harmony and the game's outcome was as it should always be.

This is fair. This is fate. So let it be written. So let it be done.

but it's gone back down to manageable levels given our recent win and their self-destruction.

OSU however has been winning far too much lately and have repeatedly pulled toilet-seat shaped horseshoes out of their ass to win games they shouldn't have in the last 5 years.

I'm sick of OSU, and I'm tired of those 50 something flamboyant buckeye fans that always have 1st row seats regardless of stadium or venue and dress and act like they're trying out for the Raiders over the hill cheer squad.  Particularly that one guy that seems to have an ESPN contract for all the face time his ugly mug gets at every buckeye game.

Yep... dislike for OSU transcends the faltering upstarts from MSU.  But MSU has certainly made it closer in recent memory.

MSU's run of success was jaw-clinchingly annoying. It was like a guy who is winning at poker because he got lucky with some cards--except he doesn't know he's winning because he's lucky. The gap-toothed bugger, just laughing away, insulting you all along. Losing to Michigan State always felt wrong in the sense that 2+2 doesn't equal five--like it should not happen. Ohio State, on the other hand, is losing to evil. Here you almost certainly have some SEC-level operations, picking up and disposing of kids in questionable ways. You have a coach who is about the opposite of Harbaugh on the family spectrum. Yet despite all that, it doesn't feel wrong like it does with MSU. Ohio State has long been a football powerhouse, and that changes things. I wouldn't call it 'respect,' because I really see evil in that program, but it's an acknowledgement of a fairly objective reality. Losing to inept is frustrating, but at least in my case, it often leaks into genuine sympathy. There will come a moment of realization when their deeply-held fears emerge, when they finally sees the world as it is, and it is so crushing. In some context, I think we are all like them. Evil, of course, is what you must hate the most. You hate it through your daily practice of the good, and you hate it especially when it triumphs. It is not just a compulsion, it is a calling--a duty. To stand for what is beautiful and right against a scarlet horror squeezing the land.

I upvoted the poster because I don't get all the down votes just for asking a semi-on-topic question in the middle of the off season.

I have different negative feelings for each program.  Ohio State is our great rival, and losing to them in any form or fashion sticks in my craw for months (and we've been eating A LOT of craw lately).  But, I also think you can't have a great rivalry without a great rival.  I respect what Coachs Tressel and Meyer have done with that program (cheating in recruiting for sure, but no more than most, and less than the SEC norm).  The thing about OSU that bugs me more than they simply have been better the last 15 years is the virulent hatred Bucknut fans have for Michigan in particular, and anyone who gets in OSU's way in general.  Even people from Ohio who sorta like Ohio State have commented on it.  C'mon guys!  Does the Michigan Marching Band really have to take extra precautions to keep itself safe when they go to OSU home games?  (Which someone who was a member of the band in the 80s described to me.)  Woody Hayes started that (and the incident with the Clemson player was the culmination of his pathology), and the fans really took it to heart.  The thing I admired about Tressel is that he started nudging the program away from identifying itself as "we hate Michigan" and towards "we are Ohio State."  The program has been a lot classier than the fan base for a while now, but even the OSU fans are starting to pick up on it.  I'm glad.

Little brother, on the other hand, has a rot spreading from within the program, the football team in particular.  Before the era of DISRESPEKT, I actually cheered for MSU when they weren't playing Michigan.  (We're all Detroit Tiger fans after all.) However, the current regime has decided they want to define themselves as "we hate Michigan," and to give them "credit," the football program has been classless jerks about it more consistently than even Ohio State.  This is the team that personifies the term "sore winner," and I want Harbaugh and company to beat them not because that would be an accomplishment (whereas beating OSU would be), but because I want them to shut up and go away.  And because I can't mention this often enough, those styrofoam hoplite "helmets" the MSU fans wear make them look like Marvin Martian.  I laugh every time I see it.

Analogies: If this were the Cold War, Michigan in the U.S.; OSU is the Soviet Union, and MSU is Cuba.  If this were World War 1, Michigan is Austria-Hungary; Ohio State is the Russian Empire, and Little Brother is Serbia.

and most of my relatives went to MSU and/or are diehard MSU fans. In a perfect world, I would pull for my alma mater, and also MSU except when they are playing Michigan. But Sparties make that impossible. Their hate and ridiculous narcissistic conspiracy-theories are extremely off-putting.

I have also lived in Ohio (though not Columbus). The OSU fans were extremely annoying, but, at least  in my experience, you could dialogue with them, and there was a level of mutual respect.

OSU is our biggest rival, no doubt. But for me, for now, I hate MSU more. Maybe if Sparty can take a giant chill pill that would change for me some day.

I'll take false premises for $1000 Alex.

(MSU has been getting a lot more talk on the board this year because of the Larry Nassar awfulness and Kathy Klage's role in the coverup, together with a tremendous spike in serious crime among the football players.  That does not raise MSU up as a rival - if anything, it diminishes them.)

I had an encounter with some Michigan State fans that pretty much encompasses the type of hate I have for them. I was in Florida visiting my elderly father. He was wearing a block M baseball cap. We were sitting outside at a restaurant and a middle aged couple with State gear on walked past us, but not before the man said, "Michigan sucks!" It was clearly directed at my father, who is in his mid 80's and somewhat out of it. They chuckled as they passed. It was that perfect storm of stupidity, misplaced arrogance and classlessness that epitomizes State fans. This was a few years ago, when they were riding high.

I don't hate State more than Ohio State.  I have family that went to State and beating State is extremely important to me but I don't hate them.  I hate Dantonio but deep down I am thankful that State finally has a coach worth hating.

In my humble opinion, we as a whole definitely hate OSU more, but there's also a level of, dare I say, fear and respect that comes with it. Yes we despise them and I hope they lose anything they compete in, and same goes for sparty. Yet in no way, shape or form do I have any fear or respect of msu. For me it's mostly due to the past decade or so: the constant little brother whining, the massive cheap shots and dirty games (I'll never forget Narduzzi's comment of "we wanted 60 mins of unnecessary roughness") and most of all, the way they've acted since they beat us a few times (thank God for last year). No mattter how much the program was elevated and started to gain national relevance/respect, the "we get no respect" little brother BS never stopped. Oh and I live in Grand Rapids, so there's quite a few sparties. Luckily they've receded a bit since last season. Either way, Fck 'em both

To be fair I hate all of our main rival programs equally, and when MSU and OSU play each other I pray for some kind of rule to be broken that causes the officials to declare the game to be a loss for both teams.

Some on this board would wish for a meteorite to strike the stadium that the game is being played at. I try to not be that heartless. They can both still go to hell.

Are MSU guys and gals. And they are all pretty good people. As adults, we are past the point where the outcome becomes personal bashing, like it does/did when I was much younger. There is always good-natured ribbing and things like that.

As much as we all talk shit about the RCMB, those people are more of the outlier. I have had generally good experiences with MSU fans.

OSU fans on the other hand? Yeesh.

The people that annoy me are the zealots. Not sure which program has more.

The MSU 'Disrespekt', the general jerk attitude of Dantonio (Where's the threat? Where are all the wolverines? stoking the little brother BS so he looks like a victim), and the idiocy about Wal-mart Wolverines annoys me as just people being an ass.

As to their success, I think Dantonio has done a good job. He came intoa  program that was a mess and rebuilt it. I'm not happy with all of his methods, but he did a good job.

They might be in deep shit now though. The scandal, plus having to compete with Harbaugh and Meyer seem to have really hurt their recruiting. Its not a hopeless situation, but its a difficult one. And one without a Hoke or Rod that one can use to get a program inspiring victory.

To me, peak Little Brother was Coach Hoke's last game in East Landfill.  Michigan was out-manned and out-coached, and everyone knew it.  As expected, the Spartans won easily, and they ran the score up with a meaningless final TD.

But wait, says Sparty to himself, that looked a little tacky on national TV.  How can we spin this?  OH!  We'll say that is was because some Michigan player (21 yrs old or younger) brought a spke on to the field (even though we didn't notice it at the time) and offended our tender feelings (of a grone-ass man in his 50s who has played the DISRESPEKT card every chance he got).  Yeah sure, let's throw some kid from the other team under the bus just because we don't want to look like the classless jerks which we are in fact, and use the most transparently BS lie to do it.

Bonus points because Coach Hoke played along and apologized for it.  Gee Brady, why don't you apologize for blocking their blitzing linebackers while you're at it?

I want to be able to cheer for Sparty when he's not playing Michigan (fellow Tigers and Lions fans and all that), but as long as they are going to act that way, I want their humiliation to continue and expand.

Of success is nothing to scoff at.

I get annoyed at the Michigan fans who talk about the 1940s and 1950s as though that stuff matters. The all-time record includes victories against Central Michigan Teachers Union and colleges who probably had their janitors playing the games.

Look at things from both sides. I have had a ton of joy watching Michigan football as a 31-year old. But I sure as shit would love to have watched Michigan do what State has done in the last decade. It is criminal that this program has not played in the BTC or won a championship since 2004.
