Wermers, Boren & Family Values

Submitted by Raback Omaba on
Like many of you, I am part of the Michigan Football Establishment. I grew up a Michigan football fan on the west side of Ann Arbor. I was there when Mercury Hayes beat Virginia. I was there when Charles Woodson put a red rose between his teeth signifying our trip to the Rose Bowl, which would eventually clinch a national championship over Ryan Leaf and his Cougars in the mild SoCal sun. I attended UofM, studying for a degree in Economics from 03-08 (1 senior victory lap), concurrent with Mike Hart, Jake Long and Chad Henne's great tenure at the U. While they didn't beat our hated rival once, they made us proud to be Wolverines. I know Lloyd Carr personally - He was a neighbor of mine on the west side of Ann Arbor. A class act, there's no other way to put it. I have two younger brothers who used to have the honor of playing catch with Coach Carr in our front yard. That being said, it was increasingly apparent at the end of Coach Carr's tenure that a change was needed - I must admit, the App State loss was really the "straw that broke the camel's back." While I didn't want to see him fired, I felt that it was his time to go gracefully, and that he did. I wanted Les Miles - A solid coach, and a Michigan Man. It was inevitable - He had to be our next fearless leader. I wasn't crazy about our other alternatives - Brian Kelly, Schiano - they just didn't do it for me. Then came RichRod....spread offense and all. I was psyched. I knew that his reputation would put us over the top in the Big Ten, and eventually, in the BCS. I was ECSTATIC that he would be our next coach. As a Michigan homer, I gave him the benefit of the doubt....through everything. Boren, Mallet, Manningham, Arrington, the WVU Buyout - there was alot to be mad/suspicious about - but even then, although I had my doubts, I still gave him the benefit of the doubt because I couldn't begin to think that our program was headed in the wrong direction. Even through the media assault, through the 3-9 season, I gave him the benefit of the doubt - he's proven himself everywhere, all he needs are his pieces to the puzzle. It's easy to think that RichRod is ruining our program - Everything you hear about "erosion of family values", from guys like Boren and Wermers, especially after a 3-9 season, makes you wonder....is he driving Michigan Football into ground??? WE ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION - I currently know several sources close to the program (part of the program.) This is what they said: Rich Rodriguez runs a VERY HARD program - He does not take 80%, 90%, 95%, even 100% - If you are not giving 120%, then you are not welcome in Ann Arbor, no matter how talented you are. His training (Barwis) is extremely physically and mentally difficult. It will break you down. He is committed to keeping the football program a family - but a winning family at that. He looks at Football as a business, but as a business of winning. He is committed to winning. Bottom Line. He will take nothing less and will not compromise on his program. Wermers was lazy. He did not want to work. My "sources" have told me that Wermers did not engage in watching film or bettering himself for the team - He was lazy as hell. So please don't put any creedance into the "erosion of family values" thing. We WILL be USC in three years. I heard this from the horse's mouth. I will not lie. We will be back

What I mean to say is, the OP doesn't push it any further than his lunch allows. As opposed to saying Rodriguez is not classy and we shouldn't want a coach that swears because other coaches don't and it's bad and etc., the only statement the OP supports as anything but personal opinion (and even then, he's only supporting the rest as OTHERS personal opinions) is that in regards to the team, Wermers was lazy. It's far to specific to be deeply insulting hearsay that we should automatically discredit. We all know what coaches are like at public events. We have seen them. We may have been there. In this case, having a personal source, and not trying to trump it up beyond EXACTLY where it applies (To Wermers only, and only during training for the football team), has quite a bit of credence. If I say, "I saw a red car leaving the scene of a crime at noon", why would you doubt that? However, if I say, "I saw a red car leaving the scene of the crime at noon, and that means that you shouldn't trust the suspect, because he said his red car wasn't there, and it looks the same to me", then that'd be good reason to discredit my statement. The OP tries to gain no leverage with his story, nor does he comment or reference outside of exactly what he was told, nor does he indicate that it's more than opinion. "THEY SAID he was lazy", not "He was lazy". I have ZERO reason to doubt that they said it.

Alot of good posts on insider info since Wermers comments came out. Good to know that Rod has the respect of his players, the program is on right track, and players are busting their ass. Can't wait for this season; it's going to be one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

The last guy that felt the hell fire and brimstone I believe was a guy who said his brother in law had dinner with RR and heard him swearing.......yeah that's it, swearing......and talked about what a problem he had with that. I think most people's problem with his post was, regardless whether it was true or not, who the hell cares if your head coach swears! I know he tried to say it was in front of alumni or something but I think there is more to it than just: we let it go if it's good info and hang people if it isn't. For me, I am going to assume that people here tell the truth until they give me reason to think otherwise. This source seems credible whether their names are revealed or not. It is also something I believed before I even read this post (which isn't to say that I only lend credence to likeminded sentiments) so it doesn't seem to me like this guys is telling anything but the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, I can live with that. It's the liars and people who come on here and pass along 10th hand gossip as though it was gospel that gets my nickers in a twist.

I feel compelled to join the legion of those thanking you for this post. It is great to see that some on the team think that Wermers' real issue was laziness and inability to fulfill the demands of the conditioning program. As for people slagging Wermers on the way out, he deserves it for his comments. And I agree with a postsr's comment that Threet shouldn't be compared to Boren or Wermers because he left in a lot classier way. I don't agree, though, that Threet has a chance in hell of succeeding with a major college program. Threet's motion is too low and many of his passes will get blocked if he stays in the pocket; sadly, he lacks the speed to throw outside the pocket. This is not a great combination. Throwing passes with a motion like Dan Quisenberry worked in the days of Daryle Lamonica, but it doesn't even work in major college now. I wish him well, though, and I hope he gets his degree.

and did just fine in college. And before you say that he was a runner, of course, but look at his last year- he passed for over 3000 yards and 25 TD's. John Navarre had more passes blocked for a 6'5 guy than I thought was possible, but he had a good college career as well. So did Graham Harrell, who has a 3'4 throwing motion. So did many others. Time will tell on Threet, but to write him off entirely based on last year is ill-informed.

That my sources were not going out of their way to spite Wermers. I often ask them about the direction of the program, sometimes in a pessimistic tone, and they responded to my query about the Wermers departure. It's not like they went out of their way to tell me the guy was lazy. The responded in order to shoot down any doubt that I had. I often do this in order to shore up my own insecurities and curiosity about the program's direction. We are headed to the top, I can assure you of that.

About halfway through I really thought you were setting up for the following template of posting: a) I love Michigan bc of xyz b) History of my love for Michigan c) I am a supporter of Rich Rod even though I wanted Les Miles first d) Mallett, Boren, 3-9 other stuff was bad but ultimately i still had faith e) Buuuuuuut. OMG THIS IS RIDICULOUS (because of Event X, that may or may not have just happened) ITS RAINING FROGS WE ARE ALL GOING TO BURN!!! A huge thank you for proving my initial concern wrong!

This isn't surprising to hear. If you want to work hard to be the best, Michigan is the school for you. If you want to rest on your talented laurels, go somewhere else.

in spring of 1968, when bo took over the program, there were some 140 players on the team, when the first game of the '68 season was played, there were 75. let's not get too worked up about wermers et al... people can get so worried about the michigan tradition being ruined, but the fact that people are leaving the program actually IS keeping with tradition, except with bo, it was much much worse.

Just making sure my tracks are covered so I can continue to post insider information throughout the season..plus, I don't want to hurt anyone for a harmless comment. You know how the internet gets......it can blow up in your face.

Maybe they could get hurt. Better to be paranoid, I suppose. And the door needs to stay open. You are the kind of poster who really has something valuable to add which we couldn't access on our own. Although, I'm still curious about my orig question, which I will not repost. (culture of a particular HS, & whether all room together.)
