welp- for most of us cord cutters, its over

Submitted by MonkeyMan on December 8th, 2019 at 11:44 AM

I don't have cable, so yesterday was it. I don't regret it at all but there are a few games I miss.

Its amazing how many things there are to do in life when there is no football. Sometimes I wonder if I should just quit it altogether.

I turned 60 years old this year. Do people watch less football as they age?

Cut the cord, dropped out of all my fantasy football leagues and eliminated social media. It’s amazing how many “bad days” I’ve dropped from my life.

Also, FYI, OSU fans would never cut the cord. They just care about it more than we do.

You’re right. I was intending the traditional social media channels (fb, insta, twitter, snap, etc). Maybe not being active on those has kept me behind the times on what’s considered social media. I don’t follow mgo posters. I don’t see pictures of you all doing great things and eating fantastic food, but you’re right that I am socializing and receive solace in shared pains/joys here.

I am in my early forties, and while I still watch quite a bit of football, it's more difficult to watch as many games as intently as I have a family that also keeps me busy, but the one thing that I have seen drop significantly in the last decade is actual in-person attendance. I still go to a few games each year, but at one point years ago (and before I had kids), I went to every home game and even some away games.

Michigan football is basically 50 hours of viewing a year. I can always make time for it.

September thru December Saturday and Sundays are the best 30-35 days of the year

I'm 72, attended Michigan as an undergrad and was at Bo's first big Michigan win in "69. M football is in my blood but I'm much less emotionally invested in it. Experiencing the disappointments, renewed hopes as the summers pass followed by a return to disappointment by mid-season and the crushing losses to osu wasn't worth it. I also enjoy reading and writing about CFB.

My son, also an M Dental School grad lives in Saline. We share a love of M football and season tickets so, it's a nice way for us to stay connected. I find it interesting following the emotional ups and downs of posters at and owners of mgo. I understand all of it. Been there, done that.

I have some cable - just enough to allow me to sign-in and stream live. Two things: the game productions since the early days of ABC and Kieth Jackson have nearly become unwatchable if you love to watch the technical aspects of the game and I do. FBS CFB is broken WRT to competetiveness across all 130 teams. It's top heavy and has become so for a number of reasons, not the least of which is impermissible benefits being paid to student athletes by well entrenched mechanisms not necessarily overtly or admittedly known by coaches or ADs. They persist, are anti-competitive and have been like that since the early 1900s, much worse, IMO, now because of the distortion it creates in what should be a normal distribution of CFB teams.

The other thing that wears on me about CFB is conference alignment being drive not by the competitiveness of a region's teams - the conference make-up - but rather TV viewership and the revenue generated therefrom, among other things not related to enhancing regional and national competition.

So, I have a lot of different activities I enjoy outside football and have found a measure of balance as I've aged but I still have that Michigan football blood in me and for the most part it runs hot.

I don't think it's age, I think it's a pavlovian response to being exposed repeatedly to punishment.

I turned 30 this year.  My interest in sports altogether has plummeted, and it has perfectly coincided with a craptastic decade from the Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Michigan Football.

Interestingly enough, Michigan Basketball is the one sport I care more about now than I did as a child

You raise a good point.  This will be the third consecutive year that nobody in my family watches the CFP.  It has no interest to us.

I’m 52, and I’ve had two kids (now aged 8 and 6) a lot later in life than I’d recommend, so I’m less likely to be anchored to the couch on game days now than I was before.  With one of their best friends being born on New Year’s Day, it’s pretty likely that I miss bowl games as often as our NFL prospects do due to birthday party commitments.

And I don’t really miss it.  Michigan football hasn’t made (or wrecked) my weekend since App State in 2007, if I’m honest.  I’ve watched the past two horsefuckings by OSU at my in-laws’ house in Ohio (they’re not Buckeye fans, so there’s at least that), but I declined to pay money to watch the Peach Bowl in person because if the players weren’t interested in showing up I couldn’t rationalize doing it myself.  If I’m able to catch this year’s bowl game on TV I’ll try to, especially if they end up getting ‘Bama like everyone seems to think.

I'm 52.  I don't think it's age, for me.  Rather, it's the number of commercials.  It's just not nearly as enjoyable as it used to be.  If I were to keep a diary of how I'm feeling every minute of a game, it would be filled with entries saying, "Bored, impatient, frustrated."  It didn't used to be this way.

Yes,  I watch less football the older I get. As many have stated, the elite programs have created such imbalance, that college football is less of a priority.  I still follow, but watch less.

I have cable for a few channels.  I watch The Olympic Channel and golf channel.  But that’s about it. These two channels make me happy so I’ll continue to subscribe.

With the good games in Ann Arbor this year, I ended up cutting the cord for most of the season. It's amazing how much better I feel being separated from the rest of college football.

Funny.  My YouTube TV subscription lapsed Wednesday.  I'm going to wait until the Christmas break to restart it to watch the bowl game.  Not watching football yesterday freed me to cook a wonderful surf and turf meal for my family and spend a few hours listening to music.  Sports is bad for us and our mental health

I watch as much college football as I can.  I don’t care if it’s the Cheez-it bowl or a late night Mountain West game.  I don’t love my cable bill but whatever.

This is 100 percent the issue the NCAA and teams face going forward. Fan apathy and disengagement (where even Alabama doesn’t consistently sell out).

A playoff like the lower divisions would a) maintain fan focus; b) engage tv/cord cutters; c) like basketball make the NCAA and teams/bowls a ton of money.

Only 4 fan bases currently engaged. NCAA missing out on billions. Would be fun to watch the matchups.

I'm 22 and right now I don't see any point in paying for cable in the foreseeable future. I can reddit stream every live sports event I want, get access to almost every movie/tv show either via my netflix subscription or by typing in "watch ___ online free" to google, and not pay out the nose or deal with cable companys' awful customer service.

I'm a bit older and watch more college football than ever. No NFL anymore though. My kids are older and my son watches college football with me, so good bonding time. I get my projects/chores done in the winter/spring/summer so the fall is mostly free.

I've substituted tv watching for videogames and mostly PC lately. Kids absorb my day, evening comes and I usually hop on my flight simulator to relax instead of tv. I'll watch a 30min show with my wife then she reads, I play a game. Rarely watch sports, only time I do is Michigan football and occasionally Michigan basketball. If my parents visit I watch sports a little more because my dad wants to.

I love college football too much to ever cut the cord.  Work and family keeps me very busy.  I need the release and can't imagine not having it.  I have mini panic attacks when our DirecTV goes out in the college football season.  This is how I know.  I truly believe my life would be worse if I cut the cord.  My wife loves watching her shows too.

I know I do. As I've gotten older(and I am older than you), and hopefully, somewhat more mature, lots of things are fading away in their importance and other things are taking their place.

I find myself watching less and less...Of course Michigan choking at season end every year for the last 15 years has something to do with it and its the same 4-6 teams EVERY year so Ive lost interest>..I used to watch EVERY bowl game but the last 10 years I dont really tune in till NY6 or New Years day bowl games the rest are just GARBAGE seeing as pretty much every team makes a bowl game now..

I stopped paying for television a couple years ago. No ragrets. Not even one letter. Same with social media. At first I thought it was enhancing my life, but after a while it became pretty obvious that it's designed as a replacement for your life.
