Way OT - 2016 is the 25th anniversary of Pearl Jam "Ten" release

Submitted by trueblue262 on

First time I saw Pearl Jam was at the Crisler Arena so there's my "Michigan connection" to posting this.

Probably really showing my age here, but I'm sure I'm not the only Pearl Jam fan around this board. This band is by far my favorite all-time band to listen to, and see in concert. I just can't believe ...... 25 years?? That's crazy in itself. But anyway, they are playing at Wrigley field in August that I have made it very clear to my wife that this would be an excellent date night!

I don't think they've ever put outa true stinker.  I get the chronology mixed up but I usually put Yield and Vs as my top two.  No Code, Pearl Jam, Backspacer...lots of great stuff mixed in there.

Shifting back on topic a bit, I always thought Faithful or Hail, Hail would make for a pretty great hype video.

I love about half the songs on No Code (Hail Hail, Off He Goes, Lukin) and really can't stand the other half. Yield was the same way (love No Way, Given to Fly). I stopped paying attention to them after Yield.

I was talking about Vs recently with a friend and we both think it's an underrated PJ album. However, I listened to it a few weeks ago and it's completely split between "singles" and "non-singles". The difference is stark....doesn't make it better or worse but interesting

One thing I love about Pearl Jam concerts is that the focus is always on the music. If you're looking for lights and fire, it isn't the show for you. One of the best things I ever witnessed live was Eddie coming out and performing a few songs solo in front of a sparse crowd before the opening act (which was Sonic Youth BTW). Love me some Pearl Jam.

The main draw was Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with Smashing Pumpkins backing them up.  The real opening act was a bunch of flanneled guys from Seattle.  "Alive" was just starting to get heavy rotation on MTV.  When we got picked up by my friend's dad's after the show, I remember saying "those guys were pretty good".

FWIW, Billy Corrigan was either drunk or high and got booed off stage.

Caught PJ at Joe Louis last year.  Still pretty damn good.

I'll go back to being an AARP member now...

Fuck yeah.  Ten had a profound effect on me.  Masterpiece. I've probably listened to it more than any other album.  I still have the disk and its scratched all to hell.

On a side note, I  downloaded an iTunes version of "Alive" and it makes me crazy because the solo/breakdown at the end is different from the original.  Anyone else have that problem?

I think its the same length but its a different cut/recording.  I'm pretty sure this is the real original version - the one I'm used to (from 3:15 onwards) ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGiTPgvKktM

The end of the iTunes version is different.  Maybe it is an alt version or radio edit. I gotta figure it out because it's really unsatisfying!

early 30s and u got into them around the age of 12. I've seen them live a bunch and still think they're the best live band on the planet. Yet, I can't listen to Ten like I used to. Outside of Oceans and maybe one other I find it....cheesy. I can't explain it but I think it's the only album where opponents are correct about Ed purposefully singing deeper than needed. He has a deep voice but you hear a completely different guy starting with VS and it becomes more natural over time. Still, I'll always love it as NO ALBUM to this day hit me like Ten hit me and they were about to put out their 3rd album before I got into them (lucky me). Ten gave me a visceral, maniacal passion that no album has since. I just grew out of it.

Probably my favorite album of the 90s. Nirvana gets all the credit for killing hair bands, but Pearl Jam was the foundation of grunge. Gossard and McCready are great guitarists who are sometimes overlooked. I enjoy Vedder lyrics, even if I can't understand them.

My senior year Yellow Ledbetter came on the radio during weight lifting. I sang every single word not really paying attention to everyone around me. I eventually snaped out of it and noticed people were looking at me like, "wtf?". It was 2011. Nobody even knew who the band was.

Saw them open up for Smashing Pumpkins and RHCP in EL in October 91. They were still selling Mookie Blaylock tees at that show. After watching Eddie climb around in the rafters, I knew this band was something special. Can't wait to catch a couple of shows on this tour.

1) I bought Ten, on cassette, at Wherehouse Records (we used to have record stores, kiddies!) on South U in September 1991. It was $5.99 and I bought it b/c I was/am a big Soundgarden fan, knew PJ was part of Temple of the Dog. I hadn't heard one song off of Ten. The deal-clincher: I got a free Mookie Blaylock t-shirt with purchase. Definitely a bargain.

2) I had tix to go see PJ at the Blind Pig in November. I did not go, because I had done zero work for a paper due the next day. So I spent my night/morning in the fish bowl, and missed an intimate show by a big band. Even better, I got a C+ (or maybe worse; I forget) on the paper.

The lesson? Either blow of your home work completely or get it done ahead of time. Plan your partying appropriately.

My first album I bought of PJ's was Yield (still my favorite) around 2000? or so. I recall hearing Release for the first time, though and just being blown away. I really became a big fan of theirs starting in 2002 and have gone to 9 shows since. I first saw them at the United Center that year and what song do they open with? Release. Rarely have I ever felt such a feeling of wonderment. What an amazing powerful band. They seem to have tapered off with the last few albums but still remain one of my absolute favorite bands.

I got a DUI (that's what they call it in Maryland) to "Alive".  I had it cranked up so loud while leaving a bar that the cops heard it from inside my car even with the windows shut and followed me.

I was not doing anything wrong, but I had a headlight out.  That's all they needed to stop me.  As my old friend Timmy "The Rat" used to say:  "Only break one law at a time."

Cost me a bunch of time and money.  Plus I was not allowed to drink for a long period of time in the peak of summer.  O'Douls is a poor substitute for the real thing.

I still look over my shoulder nervously every time that song comes on the radio.
