W Soccer upsets Penn State in historic win

Michigan is off to a great start to the 2019 season. Second year head coach Jennifer Klein got her 2nd career win over a ranked team last Friday on the road at #13 Washington State. Tonight was a much bigger test.

#23 Penn State. Ignore the ranking because they're premier program in B1G Women's Soccer. National title in 2015, the most B1G titles by a mile.

PSU has played a tough schedule to start the season and entered tonight on a 2 game losing streak with both losses coming at Jeffrey Field. PSU hadn't ever lost 3 in a row at home in their entire program history.

Michigan got off to a great start in this one when Sarah Stratigakis delivered a great ball in the box to leading scorer Meredith Haakenson who buried it to put Michigan up 1-0 just 10 minutes in.

The rest of the game it was a tight squeeze. Michigan did not play to not lose. Challenging for most of the game to go up 2-0 and much of the 2nd half was played in the PSU end of the field. Michigan goalie Hillary Beall--named the program's first B1G Goalkeeper of the Week last week--was phenomenal again tonight.

She made a diving save in the second half that looked to be a sure PSU equalizer goal.

Michigan held all the way and the Wolverines picked an enormous upset win, beating Penn State 1-0.

Prior to tonight, Michigan against Penn State was-

  • 4-23-7 in the All-Time series
  • 1-12-4 at Jeffrey Field
  • 0-15-3 against PSU when Michigan is NR
  • 0-2-0 against ranked teams in B1G Openers

The first win over the Nittany Lions since 2013. The second EVER win at Jeffrey Field. Back-to-back road wins at ranked opponents. Penn State has lost 3 straight home games for the first time ever.

Michigan is now 6-2-0 and 1-0-0 in the B1G.

Michigan will travel down to the hole that is columbus on Sunday for a 2pm game at Ohio State where the Wolverines will try to make it back-to-back wins over the Buckeyes.

Normally I would put up the Superbad soccer gif, but this is worthy of excitement.  Smashing stuff that on the pitch from the side I support.  That's how you say it, right?
