W Lax shocks #16 PSU on buzzer beater for biggest win in program history

What an unbelievable day for both Michigan Women's and Men's Lacrosse.

As you know in the thread from earlier, the Men upset #14 Penn State earlier today with a 10-9 OT victory on the road.

Well, it was a doubleheader today over there in Sad Valley as the Michigan Women faced the #16 Nittany Lions.

Was an unbelievable sequence to end the game.

PSU raced out to a 6-0 lead but Michigan climbed back to make it 6-4 and just hung around all game from the point on.

PSU's lead got trimmed eventually to 9-8 when Molly Garrett scored, and then she tied the game at 9-9 with another goal. PSU took a 10-9 lead but Lilly Grass tied it with 2 minutes to go.

PSU scored with 27 seconds left to take an 11-10 lead, with their team celebrating like they had already won the game. Apparently they didn't watch the Men's game earlier. PSU retained the ball due to a foul after the goal but Michigan forced a turnover and Catherine Granito scored in transition to tie the game with 6.2 seconds left.

And then, on the ensuing draw..........pandemonium. Maggie Kane off the draw grabbed the ball and raced down field, got the shot off in time and SCORED with 0.0 remaining!!

Michigan upsets #16 Penn State, 12-11. The biggest win in program history BY FAR.

The season ends with a 7-10 record, 2-4 in the B1G.

First win in program history over a ranked team, the most wins in a single season in the program's 5 year history. And for the first time.........real and tangible progress. Wins over Ohio State and not just competing with ranked teams like Navy, Johns Hopkins and Penn State but beating Penn State.

Props to Warde Manuel for both of these hires. Today has been one hell of a building block to go into next season.

Meanwhile on ESPNU, Johns Hopkins and Maryland are entering triple overtime in the biggest rivalry in all of lacrosse!

Edit: Maryland wins, 8-7!

That means that if Michigan had won against Johns Hopkins last week (lost on a last minute shot), then Michigan would have been playing in the Big Ten Tournament next week.

WD -- thanks so much for posting.  I enjoy knowing about this sport and the others, but wouldn't follow but for posting on the site.  Heck of an ending

But PSUs ummm “strategy” the last 10 seconds was so dumb in retrospect it makes our 2015 MSU punt strategy look like something designed by US Grant.
