Very OT - LA Lakers trade D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets (Caris LeVert)

Submitted by BoFlex on

In an completely unexpected move, the Lakers give SG D'Angelo Russell and C Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets and in return recieve Net's C Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick:

Lakers are trading Tim Mozgov and D'Angelo Russell to Nets for Brook Lopez and 27th pick Thursday, sources say.

Also according to Woj, the Lakers making the moves to entice Pacers' Paul George and Cavs' LeBron James as FAs in 2018:

For the Lakers, this is longer-term play to clear space for Paul George and LeBron James pursuit. Lonzo Ball on way at No.2 https://t.co/KxfdEuAUO0

I wonder what this means for former Wolverine and 1st rounder SG Caris LeVert on the Nets. Caris spent a large portion of his rookie season coming back from injury, but ended the season with an average of 10pt/2ast/4rbs on 24 minutes after the All-Star Break. It really looked like the Nets were committed to starting and developing LeVert for the long-haul.

Currently the Nets' backcourt consists of:

  • PG: Jeremy Lin, Isaiah Whitehead, Spencer Dinwiddle
  • SG: D'Angelo Russell, Sean Kilpatrick, Caris LeVert, Randy Foye, Archie Goodwin, KJ McDaniels

Are Piston fans the most delusional fans in Michigan? Recent examples being the 89' Pistons over current GS and then some Pistons fans thinking they can aqcuire superstars with Drummond, Jackson and some picks.

Rank them for me if you will: Wings, Pistons, Tigers, Lions

My Perception (from most to least)

1.Pistons

2.Tigers

3.Lions

4.Wings

Interesting enough is that I would rank them the same by sport for Boston.

I guess I assumed that the Nets would move D'Angelo back to his natural 2 position and start him next to Jeremy Lin at the point. The Nets coach, Kenny Atkinson, really pushed for Lin last offseason, and they signed him to a $36 million/3-year contract. I doubt Atkinson benches Lin. Lin had an injury-plagued season last year, but he ended the season averaging like 15/5/4 on 24 minutes (injury-restricted). More importantly I think the Nets went like 12-12 those games after going like 8-50 the rest of the season.

This looks like the Lakers adding ammo to either trade up from 27 and 28, or putting together a package for Paul George.  There are rumors the front office had just about had it with Russel, but if the Lakers dont score big in free agency next year they are going to look awfully stupid trading off a good sound shooting guard with Major potential for unused cap space.

I don't think the Nets have given up on Caris as much as they wanted to get someone they can trade for a better pick at some point. Russell was fine in LA but from the bit I read he wasn't viewed as a franchise player and the Lakers needed cap space to go after FAs. I wouldn't be surprised in Russell was moved again soon.

I'm assuming you feel that way because of his dad.

For me, it's hard to hate on Lonzo too much. It's not his fault that his dad is out there running his mouth to anyone that will put a camera in front of his face. By all accounts, Lonzo seems like a decent enough guy. He just happens to have a loud-mouthed jackass for a father who's own athletic career was a failure, so now he has to live his dreams through his kids.

I wish Lonzo well wherever he ends up, but I would not mind seeing LaVar getting beaten down a peg or two. I have this vision in my head of him trying to sit in on practices or tell the front office what they should be doing, and then he proceeds to get his ass thrown off the premises.

This just gives the Nets three starter-quality members of the backcourt: Lin (who is a pure PG), Russell (who is more of a PG/SG type) and LeVert (who's a SG/SF). There will be plenty of minutes for all of them.

Well the Nets starting SG last year was Randy Foye (who was awful), but their "6th man" was SG Sean Kilpatrick who was decent overall just a little inconsistent. So if I had to predict the minutes distribution, I'd say Lin and D'Angelo would both get starter minutes (30-35), Kilpatrick continues as the 6th man (15-20), which would leave about another 15-20 minutes for the other 6 guards.

The Nets are really high on Levert. He's much more central to their long term plans than Lin or Kilpatrick are (the reason Kilpatrick got so many minutes is that Caris was on a minute restriction when he started to play in Dec/Jan). They want to play 5 out and he gives them length to switch pick and rolls and the potential to both space the floor and beat guys off the dribble. They're not trying to win now, so Levert will get starter-level minutes as long as he's healthy..

the Nets have Caris as their long term starting SG who can slide down to SF if needed. He already runs PnR like a savvy vet, can get to the rim, play defense and once his shooting is back to the level at Michigan, he'll be great. He's literally the only player the Nets view as a long term player going forward. They like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson but he can't really shoot the ball which muck up the spacing. Same with Sean Kilpatrick. Solid player but isn't a shooter though.

to play multiple positions. Caris can play 1-3 based on matchup. Dinwiddie shouldnt be back as he has a team option and sucks balls! good trade for lakers. Actually not bad for nets, as they werent going to resign lopez anyway as they are a dumpster fire.

After his contract expires. He won't be happy with the GM shakeup the Cavs just experienced, has his house in LA, and will be looking to end up on a team with the players to knock Golden State off the top perch.
