UPDATE: Official Soccer Announcement. UM Athletics Press Conference at 11AM

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

Just saw this on twitter; UM will be having a press conference at 11AM. Entirely unsure what the topic will be. They did not announce they'd be having one until 10:35AM.

UPDATE: Yup, you all were right. Soccer game officially has been announced this summer.

No United or Chelsea or City or Liverpool in UCL next year (yes Im projecting WHU to get 4th). Those 4 would pull in triple or quadruple the TV ratings as the four that will be in it from the Premier. Plus who knows if Vardy, Mahrez, Payet, Drinkwater etc will even be on LC or WHU.

I had thought there was some buzz about this a few days ago, but it probably was buried somewhere in the tournament threads - the last half of the week in any given week in March is a terrible time to make announcements around here. Well, if you're announcing something unpopular, then it is an awesome time to make the announcement.

Either way, there's someone here in this building with their Chelsea gear up in celebration, so that's how I was reminded anyway.

The term "soccer" is short for "Association rules," a reference to the English FA (Football Association) that cane up with the rules of the game, differentiating it from rugby etc, in the 19th Century. Back in the day, the game played per FA rules were "soccer" games. Its not an American term.

Anyone who has paid attention to these ICC matches before: are the starting 11 generally close to that of a normal league match? I don't expect Ronaldo to go a full 90 or anything, but don't want to see a field full of reserves out there either.

Hard to tell.   When the Big House hosted Man United vs. Real Madrid a few years ago, Christiano Ronaldo, Bale, Wayne Rooney, etc. all played.  Usually, I would expect to see a lot of the 1st teamers, but I wouldn't expect them to go the full 90, but with Euro 2016 this summer, players may sit out more of the club friendlies.

Euro finals are July 10th (Copa ends June 26th), so there's a chance some of the stars will play.

That being said, as this is one of the few competitive breaks in the year for most players, I wouldn't expect a full 90 from everyone. Mostly fringe players and those working back into starting rotation.

100% fact that there is a game in Ann Arbor versus somewhere in Texas (either Dallas or Houston) as ESPN preferred because he said so.

No link available, heard this directly from his team via work...

BTW, for those who are USMNT fans as well, Matt Miazga is exactly the type of player that sees time in these games. He's one of the brightest young American talents in the world, so hopefully he's healthy and in the mix for this game (He plays for Chelsea).
