UM games that you watch over and over

Submitted by Eastside Maize on April 25th, 2021 at 2:26 AM

I was sleeping soundly, but I woke up and can’t go back to sleep. I would love to make the 2 backed beast, alas I’m solo tonight. I started surfing YouTube and now I’m watching the 2013 Sweet 16 matchup vs Kansas...arguably the most exciting Michigan game in recent history. What UM game, regardless of sport, can you watch over and over?

PSU 1997. The greatest throttling in UM history.  Made all the sweeter with the later news that erstwhile good guy JoPa was actually living a charade. Game also had the greatest hit in UM history, which, unfortunately, ended two careers, and is absolutely ungodly to witness.

I was at that game.

Some impressions of the game:

I had 2 tickets from the DC alumni association.  My wife (girlfriend at the time) got sick and could not go.  I was just going to bag it . . . why schlep 3 hours in the rain by myself to see a game we are supposed to lose in a hostile environment? . . . but I decided at the last minute, WTF.  One of the best decisions I ever made.

Game time was at 3:30 on a gloomy, misty, cloudy day.  A real Big Ten football day.  Clocks had already been set back so it was getting dark already.  I was late so I had to listen to our first series on the radio.  It was a good drive, but ended only in a field goal.  When I got close to the stadium, I could see it lit up in the distance.  It looked like a battleship floating in the middle of the ocean in a storm.  It was eerie, yet stunning.

When I made it into the stadium, Penn State was starting their first drive.  I entered the stadium at field level just in time to see McQueary "The Rooster" and his trick play blown up for a big loss, up close and personal.  After that, Michigan just unloaded.  We stopped every PSU drive and scored on all of our drives in the first half.  It looked like an NFL team against a high school team.

I sat in the upper deck which was new at the time.  The other deck was not built yet, so you could see Mount Nittany in the distance.  When it got into the middle of the 3rd quarter, what I vividly remember is the endless stream of taillights in the darkness, all leaving town in the dimming shadow of Mount Nittany.  Penn State had quit.  We Michigan fans started our own version of the Penn State cheer:  "Where is . . . Penn State?, Where is . . . Penn State?"

When the game was over, the team came over to the Michigan section near the end zone to celebrate with us.  That small section of fans was louder than the entire Big House on many football Saturdays.

After the game about 50 of us gathered around a guy with a portable TV to watch the end of the Nebraska-Missouri game.  Missouri was winning late in the fourth quarter.  We went nuts, up until the famous illegal kick that was recovered by Nebraska to force OT.  Once it went to OT we knew the writing was on the wall.  Game, Nebraska.

The game was broadcast on ABC and ESPN was doing a mini Judgement Day "Game Day" from Penn State.  (FSU and UNC were the other undefeated Judgement Day contestants).  Beno Cook was doing the PSU broadcast.  Earlier in the day, he stated that Michigan should not even bother to show up, just send the band.  So we went over to the broadcast booth and let him have it good.  He was clearly embarrassed by his earlier statements.  To calm us down, he informed us that he would be voting us #1 the next day, despite Nebraska's OT win and FSU's win.

I hit the bars after that, careful not to show too much of my Michigan sweatshirt under my coat.  But my cat-that-ate-the-canary grin gave me away all night.  I did not leave until so late that I had to find a flea-bag roadside motel near Harrisburg because I just could not stay awake any longer.

Slept like a baby that night.

I remember enjoying that game more than any other Michigan hoops game. That Florida blowout was two hours of sheer bliss. Getting back to the final four for the first time in so long, in such a dominant fashion, was just ecstatic. By the end I was hoarse from yelling with joy. There have been lots of other compelling games, football and basketball, but that one really sticks.

Sleepy, you left a birdie putt short. You should never do that.

Take the transitive property a step further here. In 2007 Appalachian State lost to Georgia Southern and Wofford. Extra credit to anyone who checks Wofford's schedule for that year.

Anyway, your choice is a good one. That was a very entertaining game. I'm thinking of Adrian Arrington's one-handed catch of a long pass and the play where Mario Manningham reversed course and outran most of Florida's team.

One of my favorites is the 2018 regional final game with FSU. It's great to hear all the Michigan fans in LA.

That is one of my favorite games.  I'm not sure if I can think of a more suprisingly dominant victory (yes, the score was close at the end but as was mentioned below the fumbles). Though seeing RichRod on the sideline, and thinking that the offense reflected a glorious future, is also part of the memory.

I don't watch games in there entirety too much, but I do watch parts. The Kansas game, for sure; the Florida game in the tournament back in 2013 was fun. For football, Denard moments are great, especially against Notre Dame. So many good moments against them.

In recent football: Michigan vs Florida 2016 Citrus Bowl - 2016 was the high water mark for the Harbaugh years (with Hoke's recruits) and this game really set the expectations. Interesting to watch again and listen to what Ed Cunningham thought Michigan teams in the future would be like under Harbaugh.

In retrospect: Hoke couldn't get to the next level with his own recruits (e.g. 2014) and Harbaugh couldn't get to the next level without Hoke's recruits.

I'll be the contrarian here - I don't rewatch games, period.  Doesn't matter if we win or lose (Can't imagine many fans wanting to watch a losing effort).  What's funny is that I can rewatch movies (Galaxy Quest says Hi!), but not sporting events.

Michigan/MSU 2004 (AKA "Braylonfest")

The absolute LOUDEST I've ever heard the Big House get and this was before the luxury boxes and piped in music.  The place was literally shaking during OT and this was with at least 10-15% of the fans gone as many left when the score was 27-10 MSU with 6 minutes to go.  Still get chills watching that one.

I was there. Can confirm the noise.

I was actually supposed to go to a reception after the game, but of course, that would have been assuming - as one might have months before when I accepted the invitation - that the game would have followed a more conventional path. I made it just in time to see people sweeping up the hall after everyone had left. Yes, the couple whose reception it was, though fellow graduates, were not sports people and it took some time for them to understand why attendance (for it was not just me who skipped it) might have been low that evening in Ann Arbor.

2004 was one of those years I had the Go Blue ticket packs before I was invited to get my season tickets. For this game, those tickets were in the second row in section 34 directly adjacent to the student section. Actually had no one in front of us because that was the camera well.

Not only did I get to watch the 4th quarter comeback and every single overtime period in that end zone, I also had gone to that game with the best man from my wedding, an enormous Sparty fan. He had the inflatable helmet and everything. Made the game that much more memorable and often on the replays, I can see us right behind the camera, me losing my mind, and he losing his lunch.

This.  There is nothing greater to watch (on the football side of things) than a dominant performance whether as a team or an individual vs Ohio State.  Sadly, they are very rare these days.  Devin Gardner deserved a big W for his efforts in 2013 right until the play calling let him down at the last moment.

Denard having his way vs Ohio State in 2011 (even if the game was closer than it should have been) is also fun to watch

One of our most underrated wins ever.

For Michigan to win the Rose Bowl in a shootout was just stunning at that time.

You kept expecting Michigan to collapse when they got down a touchdown like they always did in the Rose Bowl, but it never happened.  They just kept punching back until they were the last one standing.

Sadly the last ones we looked good against the teams we really dislike...ND in '19, PSU in '16 & '18, Wiscy the same, and OSU '16.  But, I have to go all the way back to 2011 to see a win against those effers.  I also sadly watch the close losses in '12 & '13 to OSU now and then.

Watching football games from the ‘80s and ‘90s, I’ve noticed how physical Michigan was on both sides of the ball.  The ‘85 UM-Iowa game was on B1G last night, and the Michigan D tackled hard and flew to the ball.  Backs Morris, White, Wilcher and Perryman broke through first contact and fell forward for yards. It was a different type of game then, but I think that physicality is a good thing still, and UM needs more of it.
