Talking Hypothesis Thursday - Your D-I Sport and Second Choice School

Mates,
A hypothetical question for you all.  Not everyone has/had D-I abilities but it's fun to ruminate about.  Accordingly, assume that you are in fact an 18-20 yr old D-I 5*, super-duper, can choose any school athlete.   Assume further that for whatever reason you can't go to U of M - maybe they didn't offer, they don't have your particular sport as a D-I choice, whatever, the ultimate result is that you are not going to U of M.

The questions are as follows:

1.  What sport would you choose to play with your 5* ability?

2.  What is the school you would choose? *

3.  Why?

Have a great day

*If any of you say, 'sparty' it will immediately be given 5 fakes out of 5.

Skiing at Colorado for the mountains just to be different.

Naval Academy and/or Harvard for most any other sport.

Golf at Stanford is favorable for reasons stated above.

Playing near the beach at a junior college is an impressively creative response.  That sound pretty damn good to me also.

1. Baseball

2. Clemson

3. I'd pick baseball because its the 2nd highest average career length (of the 4 major sports), football is #1 but the wear and tear on the body is too high. Secondly, I'd pick Clemson because its a southern school which typically does better at baseball and I think Bakich is building a great program there.

1. Hockey

2. probably go the juniors route but if I HAD going to go to a school, it would probably be Minnesota if I couldn’t go to UM.

3. they’re always loaded. good chance at a conference and national title

1. Chess

2. MIT (always wish I was that smart)

3. Never liked doing sports myself, have never felt any sort of “runner’s high” before, but I can play chess well into the night.

Tough call between baseball and hockey for me. Probably baseball since the top end money is better and a road trip through Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton in February is less than ideal. But I'd really miss skating.

For baseball, Stanford and Vandy would be at the top of the list - good baseball and good academics, and very little chance to have to face UM. The weather's a little more tolerable than the rest of the SEC or Arizona schools, too.

I was recruited (tepidly) by a handful of Division 1 schools for lacrosse but they were nowhere I really wanted to go.  So I went to Michigan and ended up playing a couple of years on the club team. Princeton was the pinnacle back then and it would've been cool to go to school there and play for that program. But, Syracuse has always been a powerhouse and they've always played the most high-flying and fun style, so that also would have been a top destination (although not as strong academically as other big time programs).

Not that I could've played either sport collegiately but I love soccer and volleyball. UCLA seems like it would be a great place to play either one of those sports.

1. Rowing

2. Harvard, though Oxford, Cambridge or other Ivies would still work

3. Why? That plus a Econ/Finance/Math/Statistics major is an express line to the front of a top investment banking job.
