The State Of Our Open Threads: After Ohio State

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Well, as we end our season on a disappointing 5-7 mark, this shall be the final individual entry for "The State Of Our Open Threads" though there will be a season summary coming in the next few weeks with some additional analysis and all that fun stuff. For now, we'll focus on this fucking game.

Contrary to my initial expectations for this one, our reaction was comparatively muted although it was still quite rife with the usual content. We gave 275 "fucks" and 96 "shits" regarding this game, a massive improvement over Maryland but still short of some other performances this year, most notably the 484 "fucks" we gave during the Rutgers game. All in all, however, the total instances of tracked words for this game represent 11.15% of the seasonal total, which isn't bad in a season with 12 games.

How did it make us feel? We were upset, and understandably so. Here's the Mood Chart:

You'll note that a slight alteration was made after the Maryland thread - indeed, "Satisfaction" and "Despondent" tend to represent themselves similarly in this analysis, but I still defend the tool. As for this game, We were in the "Anger" quadrant squarely, right along with four other games. We spent much of the season angry for many good reasons.

For this game, we managed an overall efficiency score of 4.13, which is not a top peformance for this blog, believe it or not. Here's the season graph:

 photo OhioStateEfficiency_zpsad2c1359.png

Our most concentrated spleen was way back at the point where we were slapped 31-0 by ND, and then we had a rough stretch in October, and then these last three games. The score of 4.13 would actually be the sixth best score this year, but then there was also a fair amount of relief expressed in the thread, which perhaps muted the reaction a bit. Also, we are a bit beaten down as fans. Not a bad performance by us, but it gets lost in a season of bad performances, as you can see.

To go along with this, here is the normalized graph for major contributors to the count:

 photo OhioStateNormal_zpsc9e78be8.png

All six major contributors were used at a rate well above the mean for each, but nothing terribly flashy in the sense of how badly we wanted someone fired after Miami (OH), how much shit we experienced during the Utah game, how much we sucked at Northwestern and so forth. We were very measured in our venting, but still more pissed than the mean for being pissed. We call that "The Pissed Mean", which goes right along with "The Pareto Our Our Discontent" (that will be in the season summary).

One thing that does affect things like efficiency and mood scoring, of course, is thread size. The Ohio State thread, which was really two threads (thanks to a rare 2nd half thread this year) was the largest for us by just a little bit:

 photo OhioStateThreadSize_zps16873999.png

Three times this year, we saw posting volume exceed 2,400 posts - Utah, Rutgers and now Ohio State. One of the major confounding factors here is the cessation of a standing LiveBlog and limited availability of other liveblogs (I think traffic is capped on Blyve if you have a free acount), so more posting occurs. In any case, it was an impressive volume all the same.

For your amusement, two of the typical dynamics that are tracked, just so you can see their relationship throughout the year. Somewhat extensive research shows that some of the words tracked trend well together, at least now and again - definitely sometimes but not all the time. Science and all that, right?

So, there's Ohio State. We were pissed, but we're used to it this season. Hopefully, things like this change soon, for our own sake.

These threads used to be fun to read because it measured how well everyone believed in the team. now its just the same old depressing shit every week

In the event anyone was interested, and to highlight just how painful we were to watch on the road for the most part, we averaged 634 tracked instances in road threads compared to 318 in hom threads despite the increased volume. Some of that is due to people who would normally be on the blog being at the games (myself included a couple times, for example), but it is a greater disparity than last year, interestingly enough. Nearly 60% of all the instances counted came from away threads.

My personal trend was as follows:

Approached the game all week with total apathy. Even planned on rooting against a win because - given how messed up the inner workings of our athletic department are - I didn't want any possibility of Hoke returning. (Side note: I watched the game at a M/OSU party and of the 10 Michigan fans, 8 were similarly rooting against a win).

2. Watched the hype video shown on abc immediately before the game (especially the famous scene where they tore down our banner) and said "fuck this, I hate OSU. I hope we win and ruin their damn season."

3. Devin pick on the second play of the game: back to "holy crap are we bad. I can't take any more of this. If this is how it is going to be, hope we lose by 50 and force Hackett to do something as drastic as Harbaugh.

4. Michigan answers with a score: "wow, where was that downfield offense and Gardner running game all season??? Is it possible that this is what we are really capable of? Maybe it just took a bit longer for the youth to get it? Changing OC can often take time to show benefits so perhaps? The OL even looks good. Fuck it, let's make this a game and win. I can even deal with the threat of Hoke coming back, however unlikely, because look - we had a real offensive series against a good team on the road. Go blue, beat OSU". I maintained this attitude until 2 series after the Johnson injury. Then:

5. "Why does our defense always crumble on the second half? Every freaking time. Can't we ever get a key stop. Mattison sucks as much as the rest of them. Oh well, good game for 2.5 quarters. Fire hoke now.

6. Aftermath: frantically refreshing mgoblog and Twitter for any hint at movement on the cc front.

Reading that post was almost scary for me.  If  not for a slight alteration to point 5 I would say it was 100% dead on.  I would have said:  "why does our defense always crumble right before the end of the first half? Every freakin time...etc"  and all the rest of the statement.

And therein lies the summation of this year. Every possible avenue for disappointment was taken.  There were just enough glimpses of the underlying talent to tease you into thinking they were going to break out of it, only to have Lucy pull the football from Charlie Brown every fucking time.  Good riddance to 2014 and yet another historically poor year.

Former Season …

I think we have the talent now to have at least a passable season next year. My only concern is with the quarterback situation.  Who will replace Gardner?  Our backups have not had any real game experience and the few times they have been on the field was less then steller. What really bothers me is Ohios State winning big with a second string quarterback and when he goes down the third string quaerterback comes in and looks good to.  I think they could have sent in the waterboy and still looked good.

In a weird way, and maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment, but the fact that OSU had two, then maybe a third qb ready to roll gives me some hope. Hope in that maybe our next coach can come in and give this team a kick in the ass that has them playing with some hate and attitude and masters the little things necessary to beating the best teams no matter the situation. Someone that will inject a little swagger and testosterone into these guys so we can be Michigan again! (not literally of course!)

I think LSAClassOf2000's analysis is showing a great deal of apathy here from mid-season onward.  WHile the worst results occurred through the Rutgers game (or the expected pounding we took at MSU), I think there might be some lag in there as we all became more accustomed to the fact that Michigan was week this year, even as we were surviving versus Penn St and the M00N game.

I started the game unemotional.

Then Gardner threw the early pick, OSU scored, we punted, OSU returned to the ~30 and got flagged back to the ~M 40.  At this time I had visions of a 63-7 game, and actually started contemplating at what level of beatdown would I turn it off.

Then, unexplicably, Urban declines to try a 49 yard FG, OSU takes a delay of game penalty, and punts into the endzone.  We drive for a TD, and I'm back to allowing myself to root for Michigan w/o the disappointment safety helmet on.

We go up 14-7, and I start to wonder where the team has been all year.  Then we give up the TD before the half, and I start to go back into expectations guarding mode.

I felt bad for Barrett when he went down, but seeing Playskool in the game gave me hope.  Even after we punted to OSU I thought we were in good shape down 28-21 w/ 8:25 to go and OSU at its own 20.

Nope, a limited Playskool leads an 80 yard drive to put the game in very good shape for OSU at 35-21, and then Gardner fumbles a scoop-and-score to balloon the deficit to 42-21.

Hey, weren't we just in this a few moments ago?  I realize this is the last few minutes of 2014 Michigan football, and dutifully root on as Gardner drives down the field to trim the deficit to 42-28.  We fail to recover the onsides kick, and the game is over.

I'm more anaytical than angry at this point as I'm wearing my disappointment safety helmet.

I don't believe the stats because I used the word more Than I wrote it. In fact, I belive that fuck was used by Me more than your calculated number In The ND game. I beleave that your chart should have included times used When our coach was In view or being discussed.

anyone, any fan, anyone posting on this site, who would root for Michigan to lose. I just don't get it, from a diehard's perspective. And I've heard the justifications, and still don't get it. Wanting UM to lose is a pathetic position for an alleged UM supporter.

I would never root against us and even with a few minutes to go yesterday I had an overly optimistic hope we could come back. Ruining buckeye hopes of national championships has given me great pleasure over the years.

Some folks openly expressed a concern that if we beat OSU the higher ups would forget the rest of the year.

Even now folks are on edge wondering.

But believe me, I understand the frustration.

Sadly, I sense a coming showdown between football supporters and those who feel that football detracts from the university's mission. I hope I'm wrong about this.

I do hope we land Harbaugh, but I'd be OK with someone named Stoops (Bob or Mark, I'm not picky) or even Les Miles. My fear is that Harbaugh is still obsessed with the NFL, and that Les Miles is using us as contract leverage. (No, he'd never do that.)

As always, Go Blue! Better times are ahead.
