Stadium Experience Today

Submitted by Black Socks on

For all of you who attended the game - would you kindly contrast the Hackett experience with those in the past?  I am on the West Coast and would have loved to be there.

Thank you.

They literally played it twice, but one time it was cut off, so in actuality, once......

This is the loudest the Big House has ever been (not to mention best appearance for students and recruits), so I don't agree that we've had "enough" of seven nation army: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piEWdXQSgA8

I tend to get very frustrated with people who want the band playing 24/7 because most of them tend to be old alumni who rarely ever do the band cheers aloud anyways, whereas the students, who participate the most, are chided for wanting some pump up music sporadically (I am not advocating for constant music and prefer less than what Brandon had, but still).

That was the loudest the Big House has been.... in the last 7 years.  There was a time, not long ago, when the entire student section screamed at the top of their lungs, continuously, on defense.  Not humming and "oohhh"ing to 7NA. Seriously, everyone used to scream - without the lulls of 7NA.  And while you were screaming you were shaking an empty bottle with coins in it.

7NA is lame because everyone does it and if any college football team can lay claim to it as thir tradition, it is Ohio State, who's been doing it for kickoffs for over a decade.  I'm not a fan of copying OSU.

NFL teams have been playing recorded music during games for decades. Having the school band play was one of the things that made the college game different.

I've always felt the live band made the experience more personal and made me feel more connected to the university. I can go anywhere and hear a recording of "Seven Nation Army" piped into a stadium. Hearing the Michigan Marching Band play "The Victors" or "Temptation" live is something unique to a Michigan game.

I had no service in the stadium, didn't get texts until I stepped out at half time. Overall good experience, at one moment the speakers stopped working and I thought they were stopping the piped in band play, too bad it was only a speaker malfunction. Seven nation army is the only song that gets the crowd fired up, unless it's JH going nuts on the sideline after a terrible call on the punter tackle.

Band speakers didn't appear to be working and lots of scoreboard issues.

However, that punt snap snafu was the loudest I've heard the stadium in a long, long time.

Needed more band music. Too much piped-in. Couldn't tell whether the video voiceover part of the halftime show was an error or not--they drowned out the band (at least on the east side).

The captioning on the screen is often lousy but boy did those Oregon state names pose an obvious challenge today.

Also, the no-bags policy was not carefully enforced. I saw two women who had purses today, both sitting within 10 feet of me.

Seemed to be some grumbling about the cash-only situation at the concessions, and the sound in the bathrooms wasn't piped in loud enough. That was a JRSC issue, not sure about elsewhere.

It was great.

I'm really happy that Hackett had some Seven Nation Army before kickoff. Brandon over did the music, but in moderation it is excellent. It should not be purely the band.

I thought the pom poms looked great and the crowd was definitely louder than any game last year.

That was moderation?

Regarding the pom-poms, I wish they'd show some moderation on those, too. Nothing like the person shaking the damn thing around during play, arm extended fully above their head, which makes them a couple feet taller to see over, and pretty much turns into a flickering maize wall between you and the field. Not to mention the fact that it's annoying as hell to get smacked in the head with them when someone gets excited.

If cry babies to me. Not enough music, to much music, goal post to bright, cash only wtf, 2 ladies had purses right next me. I swear I'm ashamed to say I'm a die hard Michigan fan sometimes after reading these threads. You people need to lighten up and tugged up a bit. Jesus Christ already

I merely noticed that they aren't enforcing the bag policy consistently, not crying over seeing purses. Cash-only was a glitch that took a few fans by surprise, which I know because I saw people asking seaated for cash.

These are observations about the fan experience in MI stadium today, which the OP requested. Its the topic of the thread.

If you read all this stuff as bitter, cranky complaints? That's the way you are choosing to read it, friend.

at the field hockey stadium. Even during the afternoon field hockey games. No porta potties outside Glick. Brandon had them open. People were pissing under the stands today. So minus one point for Hackett. I mean isn't that what my donation is for?

Regarding piped-in music: Besides pregame warm-ups I didn't hear any Eminem. The last few years there has been a ton of "Lose Yourself" played. Still quite a bit of AC/DC though. Overall not as bad but still quite a bit. Probably already mentioned, but I haven't the energy to read all the posts and have yet to watch my recording, but how did that pop Jabrill laid on the WR in the 4th look on TV? I was in section 2, had a poor angle on it, and had about 8 rows stand and block what view I would have had. (No replay at the stadium for that play).

1. So. Much. Rawk. Why on earth does every second have to be filled with noise?

2. Loved that the assholes who have sat in front of us for years and acted like meatheads and picked fights with people every week sold their tickets. To Oregon State fans. But they were cool as hell. Seemed like all the Beavers in the place were good-natured and fun. Wish those dudes would come back every week.

3. I'm not sure how this can be fixed, but I think it's time Athletics took a hard look at the concourses under the sideline structures. It's sheer hell in there between the lines for the bathrooms, the lines for the concession stands, and the fact that it's so damn dark you can't see where you're going. Needs way more lighting, and perhaps a better system to mitigate how people move and queue in there. I've really just had enough of trying to wade my way through there during peak times. Just an unfortunate, unintended design flaw.

Great experience today for the obvious reasons.  And as others have noted, the crowd did seem to adapt to the change of guard.  It wasn't what it was in the old days, but it was certainly better than it has been in the recent years.

There were more stretches of game where you could converse with people instead of nonstop eardrum damaging noise.

Concession prices are actually higher, the 4$ popcorn is now 5$.  Lines everywhere took longer, be it at the gates or to buy concessions but I thought this was sort of positive as there really were 109,000 people there.

I get that we can't go back to the 1970s.  If I could pick one thing to change about today, it wouldn't be to get rid of the RAWK, as annoying as it is.  No, what I would do is create a stadium experience that would focus on 2 key moments: the beginning of the game, and the beginning of the second half, when our team takes the field.  These moments should not be an afterthought that you hardly notice above the RAWK.  These should be highlights of the experience for everyone, players, coaching staff, fans.   Turn off the RAWK and announce when the team is taking the field, with their coach, and the band.  For lessons on what this is supposed to be like, Carl Grapentine.

I'm post-Eisenhower so I though the rawk music was fine but the DJ had a quick trigger finger. It seemed like they cut off a few songs for other songs. Just weird. The hype video was also strange, I thought. I'm ok with throwing in the other M athletics but there was no appropriate climax leading to the banner. I almost missed them running out of the tunnel. The crowd was great for a noon game. I was asked to sit down on a big 3rd down play which sent me into a minor rage but that's all part of the experience at this point.

I didn't like the piped in music between plays, that's where I noticed the DJ quick trigger finger. I'd rather have had it during intermissions, which it was most of the time. Crowd noise was good on 3rd downs, did cause a false start for OSU, overall the crowd was fairly quiet.  They were loud at times when the offense was on the field.

This was like one second before massive clipboard asskicking.... The crowd was booing the refs loudly from where I was at then erupted into cheering once harbaugh started going nuclear jackhammer...... It was kind of glorious.... I really felt like I was at something special for a second :)

Jim was actively getting people to try to get eh crowd into it on third downs in second half.....and was waving for people to quiet down on the big offensive plays ... It worked well, quite a few players helped rile the crowd up as well, but coach deserves credit for getting the hand sitters loud....

To the guys or girls below talking about compression, I wanted to add mu two cents. I was a student 25 years ago. We always crammed down to fit many more students in the lower sections. That was especially true as freshmen and sophomores. I have no idea whether the student section was full or not, it certainly was not many times last year, but even were it full you should expect to see substantial space at the top of the bowl.
