Signing Day Recap / Drinking Thread

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

All in all, a great day!

A few notes:

  1. I have it confirmed that Weber was leaning to Michigan yesterday. OSU hit it hard last night and he woke up "50/50." Michigan got Higdon and he used that as his reason (or excuse - depending your point of view) to chose OSU. Since his announcement he has admitted that Higdon impacted his decision - not competition wise - but because he was told (according to him) that he would be the only back in Michigan's class. That is the reason he told Sam Webb that he basically felt lied to.

I personally call b/s and think he was just looking for a reason one way or another and jumped at the first shot to make an excuse for himself to select either school, but whatever.

Sidenote, I also confirmed that he wanted badly to end the recruiting cycle, then Harbaugh and Wheatley made such an impact, OSU lost Herman and he had no choice but to reconsider. He was nervous about flipping back and never really made a firm decision.

I could not confirm if he knew about Higdon before today like the rest of the world (hard to believe he didn't). No use in crying over spilled milk...moving on.

  2. Multiple reports have the UM staff regrouping and going HARD after Roquan Smith. I like our chances. He's had every opportunity to go to UGA and he hasn't. He lost his coach at UCLA and we're putting on the press. I'm certainly going to keep tabs on this one...it would be a HUGE "get" for us.

  3. As reported, Cole is starting at WR, Wheatley at TE, Washington at CB and Kinnel at FS. Andrew David was asked if he could compete at punter and Baxter basically replied that "I treat it like a relief pitching staff in baseball, I'm not opposed to having one guy for XPs, one for FGs, one for punting and one for KOs." His point was that the best player will play depending on the situation.

Anyway, what we drinking tonight?

Cheers to these guys!!!

Weber should have verbally committed the day before NSD. Why should the coaches ignore a good RB who wants to play here and decommitted from IA to do so? I'm sure Weber would have made another excuse if we would have passed on our sure bet RB and he signed with OSU! I don't blame JH one bit for filling a need!

Out of curiosity, how could Weber think Michigan wasn't targeting other RB's?  I mean, there have been several offers and visits the past few weeks, right?  I wish no ill towards him but since he didn't openly commit and Michigan was knowingly searching then it's plain ignorance to think Michigan wouldn't take a RB while Weber twisted in the wind.

Just my thoughts/ opinion on matter.

Hope he actually gets playing time (unlike Dunn experienced) and matures into a solid citizen.

Signing... maybe, since Michigan had several RB's they offered visited the final few weeks?!   But I would think that guarantee would only come if he gave a 100% verbal, doesn't sound like that was the case as he was back and forth till the end.

I wish him the best, but I think his excuses are just there to deflect the heat (and unjustified) from him going somewhere besides Michigan.

Much in the same way people say give the coach 3-4 years to get his recruits on the field, we have to give our coach at least a damn year to establish a recruiting ground after coming straight from the NFL.

Please stop with the doom and gloom after 3-4 weeks of recruiting and only 2 weeks of allowed in-home and on campus visits.

Had my first Saugatuck Neopolitian Milk Stout (8.5 out of 10)...next, had Tweason Ale from Dogfish Head (7.5 out of 10).

Both firsts.

Not bad. The stout started chocolate, the. Vanilla, then finished strawberry. Interesting, recommend it for a different experience.

Bottom Line: I'm happy with the guys we got and could care less about the ones we didn't get. No ill will towards the guys we didn't get, I just don't see me having much interest in their careers, as I'm really only interested in the guys that go to UMich.

I spent an hour or so mourning Clark and Weber, but after that, I was done. I want players who want to be here. And whatever the reason or excuse, these gentlemen weren't interested. Onward and upward! I also don't care about Marshall after that mini 30 for 30 quality rap video he made about his decision (with six different possible endings ready.) All I could imagine was Bo Schembechler watching a recruit showboat like that. Definitely not Michigan's style. USC couldn't be more perfect for someone with such a flair for the dramatic.

I'm happy with the day's results, for the most part. And I think I did more work on my off day keeping up with my personal NSD cockpit than I would in a normal day at work. No adult beverages for me tonight. Sparkling water and Cran-mango juice. I'm been following all this since 7 am. Will not be attacking my Thursday with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

Drinking some good old American bourbon. It is interesting how many recruits appear to be undecided going into signing day. I used to think most were playing a game to get some attention (still think this was the case with Clark) but it seems many truly do not know until it is time to choose.

Great job by Harbaugh and the staff given the time frame they had to work with. Be excited about what we got today, and what is already in the cupboard. Oh and peace out Jolly Mangina...]V[ Go Blue!

That is the term Baxter used on WTKA today to describe his punt coverage team.  He said he uses a "shield punt" formation and variations off that.  (Of note he refers to the NFL formation as a spread punt).  Said that the punt returner was a potential (scoring) bomb and his guy's job is to get to him and defuse it before he could go off.

Some Legacy Blue. That is in keeping with the HC hire. Big shoes to fill, for everyone.

Raising a glass of '08 Rhys Alpine to this all working out.

Mainly because he didn't get Clark or Marshall. I can't believe the hate for Michigan around the media circles. Why aren't they talking about the disappointing class MSU put together. MSU has had four 11 win seasons and could only recruit the 22nd or 23rd best class. If Michigan had won 11 games each of the last four years we would have at least a top 10 class and maybe top 5. But according to Dantonio, MSU is recruiting strong and getting big time players. So the talking heads leave MSU alone and still claim Harbaugh fell on his face today even though Michigan was in on at least 3 Five Stars and many 4 Stars. Damn the haters. They are going to get theirs. Michigan didn't get those guys but who would have thought they would be in any position to get a 5 Star kid with only 3 weeks recruiting. Amazing.

4-stars than MSU and a higher average recruit ranking than MSU.  (No I am not saying stars are all that matter)

I live far from Michigan so I lurk at RCMB from time to time to get a feel for their fanbase.  They are revelling in their great class and (other than Scott who should be really good) specifically a DE they grabbed out of Utah while mocking Michigan fans for celebrating "stealing a 3-star kid from FAU - who probably didn't have a commitable offer from FSU".  .....Johnson is rated higher than the Utah kid fwiw.

Their utter disregard for Michigan (even if it is just whistling past the graveyard) reminds me of our thoughts on MSU during the first few years during the current "slump" in the rivalry.

Unfortunately for M - MSU recruiting is finally starting to see some bump from the recent on-field success and I highly doubt Dantonio is taking M and Harbaugh as lightly as the fans seem to be.  Harbaugh likes a challenge and should have the tools in the box to beat MSU if he can get development on track.  Recruiting will be better than fine from this point forward.

If Brionte Dunn was good enough to leave early to go pro he would have played at OSU. Your assumption based on star ratings is a huge jump in logic.
