SI article on Forcier
Who is Steve Schiller? I guess I should know since he was our only returning starter last year.
That's not good?
No, it isn't. He's a QB though, so not too big of a deal.
It sounds like that's where he was when he arrived here in January. I wonder what he's improved his bench to now? By fall camp? It'll be interesting to see how much Barwis can get the kid built up.
He said he got up to 190 but then lost 10 or 15 pounds from the flu. Says he's trying to hit 200.
Wow! That's quick progress. Now I just hope he doesn't push himself TOO hard in the weight room.
I think that he was talking about his weight when he said that. Not how much he could bench.
I would bet a lot that he is benching 200 by now. It would be very easy for a D-1 athlete to make the improvement from 135 to 200 in 4 months. Huge gains come quickly when you're first starting a workout routine. The only issue is how much spring practice ate into his S&C.
If he was pressing 45 pounds on each side, that works out to 90 pounds total, not 135, unless he's using some kind of three-sided dumbbells.
Well Gym Rat, the bar weighs 45 lbs as well. 45 x 3 = 135.
45 (bar) + 45 (one side) + 45 (the other side) = 135
D'oh.
(Blame Mike Gittleson for popularizing machine-based workouts, which is what I do. I don't know much about your old-fangled "barbells.")
God made Mike Gittleson, so it must be His fault.
the bar is 45 lbs.
especially if he weighs even around 180. This fall, I did it with 62 1/2 pounds on each side (170 total) while weighing only 125 (wrestling).
Again, we don't know what he's doing on the bench, lots of S&C coaches do different things. There was no talk of reps or sets or speed or rhythm or anything. Secondly, as a wrestler you use strength in a different way, and I'm going to assume this wasn't one of your first times bench pressing.
i knew NOW what he was doing on the bench. I'm just saying, that even coming in, that seems pretty bad.
Even just coming in, 135 on the bench for him is bad. Allow me to clarify here that I already know that's what he started at, and has likely had huge gains since... but I can do that no problem and I weigh about 125.
I'm really hope that wasn't his max.
I'm sure he wasn't talking about a 1-rep max, and even if it was, he's likely much improved by now, and further, it's not terribly important at QB.
Anyone else remember when Kevin Durant couldn't bench 185 pounds once?
Really though, this thread is just depressing, because at 175 pounds, I max out on the bench at 180 or so. Ugh. I can curl like a mofo, though. Too bad that's really not useful in an athletic sense whatsoever.

about my benching max lol. Thanks Sommy! Seriously though, the average person benches their body weight, so you're just fine.
Do you know how many times he was able to do 135? How can you say it's bad? What if he was asked to do 35 reps?
1) Nope.
2) I can say that's bad because that is my opinion, and I felt like stating it. I'm the type to speak my mind regardless of whether it's the popular opinion, or even wrong.
3) Even you have to admit that's a bit extreme and therefore, an unlikely request (considering that Barwis et. al. would know TF's limits).
um...so he's using a weightless bar?
That's not bad for a 7th or 8th grader. Unfortunately, I'm being serious here.
In his defense, he said that when he first got here he was benching with a 45 on each side, not currently (he's been in this weight program for 3 months now) and we also don't know what kind of workouts they are doing. Barwis doesn't strike me as the guy telling his players to do 3 sets of 10 reps on the bench. He may be doing 15 reps at a time or doing lots of sets. At that point, maybe the 45's comment isn't as bad as we think.
A kid does not have to be strong in the traditional sense to throw a rocket pass as a quarterback. In fact, too much muscle bulk actually hampers a quarterback's arm strength. Rest assured that Brett Favre was not exactly a specimen in the weight room.
Tom Seaver never lifted anything heavier than 20 pounds, and he threw a baseball just fine. Of course, football is somewhat different, but the principle holds true.
Now, Tate likely could throw harder with some more arm strength, but it's not as though you have to be a power lifter to throw a football well. That depends much more on mechanics and arm speed, not necessarily arm strength.
Tate will be just fine.
hahah I hope that's a joke
Not bad for your first time ever bench pressing. It'll go up.
I am glad we got this kid and not Newsome or Beaver. This kid is going to bust his ass for us. I love that about him.
Jesus this kid is going to have an incredible amount of pressure when the fall starts; I hope his brother Jason does end up as GA at Michigan to help Tate deal with some of the pressure.
Good article. I am seeing a lot of attention over this kid. I think the biggest question about him will not be his talent level, but how he does under pressure. If he can handle the pressure off of the field I think he will be fine on the field. Side note I read that D Rob ran a 10.29 100.
10.28, actually. Brian had an article on the front page somewhere.
Denard is getting slower with age.
I think a lot of people are discounting Forcier's agility and speed. He has very good football speed for a QB, and a 6th sense for where he is on the field at all times, particularly when he's been scrambling around like crazy.
Yes, his arms sure do look weeny, but how can anyone explain this kid launching rocket passes 60+ yards downfield effortlessly and right on the money?
I do agree that Forcier has to get his strength up and maintain his speed (which Barwis will ensure he does). Unless Forcier hits the weights and makes some serious strength gains this summer, the thing I'm most worried abuot is taking the hits which are sure to come to any spread option quarterback.
Hello, McFarlin. You've been quiet lately.
Magnus, were you the one looking for weight lifting routine ideas for your team a few weeks ago?
If so, one of my friends has just started seriously training for UFC type fights and he has seen crazy results in the like 2 months, something the kids could do over the summer. He basically does workouts using a tractor tire, sledge hammer and some kettle balls. I play college ball and I never got a better workout then I did with him. There was a recent article in Mens Health that had a similar workout.
Again I am not sure if that was you that wrote that, but just did the workout last night and it was pretty intense.
If he added meat carcass punching to that regimen, he might be onto something.
It was me. I might have that Men's Heatlh article - I've just been too busy over the last month to do much magazine reading. I actually tear out those workouts from Men's Health so I can use them myself or implement some of the exercises with my team.
Thanks.
You've inadvertently uncovered the secret to Barwisization.
I weighed 155 in throughout undergrad and was benching 185-200 while training with Thor (don't know if anyone remembers him from the old training staff). Here's the bad news - I was a cheerleader, not a quaterback. No ones hopes were pinned on me to be the savior of M Football. Cue Chet in Aliens: "we're screwed man!"
Can someone explains to me how pectoral muscles are important for throwing a football? Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.
Haven't you seen his film? He throws chest passes, like in basketball.
