Schefter: Harbaugh to NCAA Unlikely

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
Per report on Mike & Mike. From everything he has heard, and would personally want, it's unlikely Harbaugh will leave the NFL

Schefter is very reliable. He's careful not to report rumor.

Crucially, he is sticking to what he knows here. So when he says "Harbaugh to NCAA unlikely," he is saying that as someone who has the best ear to the ground in the sport. Someone fed him info about possible trades; nobody has fed him any info about Harbaugh to Michigan. If that info was out there, he'd have it; it's not being talked about in NFL circles.

Combine that from someone who can be objective and knows the business, for whom the idea of leaving a successful, Super Bowl-caliber NFL career for college is unthinkable, and you get this conclusion.

This doesn't mean that Harbaugh won't come, but it makes a lot of sense.

Okay, picture this:

someone in the 49ers organization tells Schefter that he thinks Harbaugh is going to stay in the NFL.

Because the guy's in the 49ers organization, Schefter gives it some credence.

However, the guy may be putting that word out there for no other reason than to increase Harbaugh's trade value.

Like I said - until this process is over, don't believe anything you hear, read, or see on tv.

Just like it sounds.  He says "hey, I heard [insert info].  Coach/GM says "Oh, really?  Well, did you know about [insert other info about something else].

Not everyone is a fan.  From the article linked below:  "Not everyone is as impressed with Schefter’s rapid reporting. Last month, after Rams quarterback Sam Bradford left a preseason game with an apparent knee injury, Schefter tweeted that initial tests “did not show damage to ACL.” St. Louis Coach Jeff Fisher was promptly asked about the report.

“Oh, you know, I didn’t see Adam in the locker room or the training room today,” he told reporters. “That’s funny. If you see [Schefter] tell him I say hi.

“Yeah, he knows everything,” Fisher added, the sarcasm impossible to miss.

The next day, the news became official: Bradford would miss the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

It seems to me that Harbaugh is playing this one really close to the chest. If there were real signs of him indicating one way or the other you would see many more outlets reporting this. Schefter may end up being right, but I don't think this report is based on anything but conjecture and gut feelings.

I don't think anyone really knows Harbaugh's mind right now except Harbaugh. What Schefter is hearing may just be more of the NFL's echo chamber of so-called "insiders", media people and agents who are inclined to believe that a successful pro coach like Harbaugh would stay in the pros and never go back to the NCAA.

I am so not prepared to hear, "After an exhaustive search, we've come to the conclusion that Hoke embodies everything that we all value and love about Michigan." Not prepared at all.

You could see this coming when the report came out that they might try to trade him.  They know another NFL team will want him so why not look for player compensation to release him early?  Michigan only has a chance if he gets an outright release which appears very unlikely anytime soon.

But John Bacon said that Dave Brandon was the reason we didn't get Harbaugh four years ago!

Oh, that's right, he said it because he wanted Brandon gone for his own reasons.

Whatever Bacon's reasons were, he was 100% correct about David Brandon.  DB was the worst AD in the history of the University of Michigan.  He was personally responsible for holding the program down another four years.  He alienated everyone around him except his rotating roster of employee/sycophants.

Didn't David Brandon himself say that he never considered anybody other than Brady Hoke for the job?

Personally, I think Mr. Brandon was lying when he said that, but it's hard get angry at John Bacon for assuming that Mr. Brandon was actually telling the truth.

If I were to bet, I'd say Harbaugh goes elsewhere.  That said, you have to take any ESPN report with a grain of salt.  They dedicate an entire morning program to the NFL and broadcast NFL games.  Over the past 2-3 days, there has been an apparently organized effort to talk about Harbaugh staying in the NFL.  He may very well do that, and it certainly would be in the interest of ESPN that he do that.  Nothing has happened until it happens.
