Red Wings lose, but clinch playoff birth with Bruins loss. Open Thread

The Red WIngs lost to the Rangers in their final game of the season 3-2. But the Senators beat the Bruins 6-1, so the Wings advance to the playoffs for the 25th straight year.

You have to be kidding. The patriots were garbage for several years. Also, Alabama went through a decent slump, missing bowl games in the 2000, 2002, and 2003 seasons. Your contrarian viewpoint is strictly that and holds no water.

Jdons view is not being a homer and is based on fact. It is the second longest playoff streak in all of sports history.

The streak isn't the 2nd best in all of sports. In fact, it's tied for third in NHL history. I think some Canadian football team is up there also if you want to count all of sports history. Go check the history books, many NHL teams have had very long playoff runs. It's not as hard as one might think if you go check the history of the NHL. If it wasn't for a tie breaker rule one year, the Montreal Canadiens would've made the playoffs 46 years in a row! I'm happy for the Wings and wanted them to continue the streak, because if it reaches 30 or 35, they'll most likely hold the record. Though I would imagine many disagreeing with us being called THE ELITE team in ALL OF SPORTS just because we have this long playoff streak, especially since our last Stanley Cup Championship was almost ten years ago.

Ok, I forgot about the Blackhawks at 28. I knew about Boston at 29. That said, I think most people would say "all of sports" typically refers to mostly American sports and sometimes includes major international sports such as European soccer or Aussie rugby or something. I'm sure you could find some obscure sport in some country where teams have made extremely long streaks. ALL of sports is hyperbole, so spare me the Canadian football team.

The Bruins only won 2 Cups (from the Orr era), while Chicago and St. Louis never won one during their streaks. The Wings won 4 Cups and have made the playoffs in ten straight even after the addition of the salary cap. As we've seen recently, even teams like Boston and LA have missed the playoffs after winning the Cup. Now almost every team is competitive so getting in is not an easy task.

hmm... pats were in 85 superbowl... then 97 (I think)... then the current run...

I think they come close, however they have had some real rock bottoms during that time.

IF the patriots can move on from brady and still win like the lions did with yzerman then I will give them the tip of the hat...

The spurs comment below deserves some respect and they probably are THE Class of sports...

Whoever said alabama is looking at too small of a window...

The Red wings since the mid 80s have won a lot of games, made a lot of playoffs, advanced in a lot of playoffs, done so with generations of players and  through multiple coaches.   I don't think anyone can touch their success over a 30 year period, but hey, thats me...

Yeah, but the point with a team like Alabama is that a championship is infinitely more valuable than a Playoff appearance. The Red Wings have been crazy consistent for a long period of time and are right up there, but if you weigh the performances once there, it's certainly close with a lot of those teams.

I was going to ask if you were 15. Missed by a year.

Let me help. In the past 25 seasons:

Stanley Cups Won - Wings 4, Hawks 3

Stanley Cup Finals - Wings 6, Hawks 4

Better season - Wings 17, Hawks 8

Missed Playoffs - Wings 0, Hawks 10

Avg. Points - Wings 104.6, Hawks 89.8

Hawks have had a great recent run, but it's not even close.

An amazing era of success by RW. Sometimes we lose sight of what a great franchise they've been, and what a fantastic owner Mike Ilitch has been.

Especially during the Jordan years, Chicago fans just gave up on the hawks. They were completely irrelevant.

The best comparison for the Hawks under "Dollar Bill" Wirtz is William Clay Ford and the Lions. He owned the team for 40+ years and never won the cup.

It's amazing how much impact good ownership has on a pro sports team, and how badly poor ownership can screw things up. Rocky has done a great job, just as Ilitch has been fantastic for the Wings (and not bad for the Tigers).

I'm a Wings fan, but I like to see original six teams do well, especially in good hockey towns. You're lucky to be a fan during their remakable rise.

DetriotBlue, it's hard to blame Hawks fans when Bill Wirtz was owner. He was despised, and rightly so.

Even their fans' lack of knowledge can be partially attributed to Wirtz keeping them off regular TV.

They had a lousy product and limited access. As soon as Rocky took over, he took the hawks off pay-per-view, and improved the product on the ice. Now they're crazy for the hawks in Chicago.

Back in the day, I loved watching Wings-Hawks games in old Chicago Stadium. Great atmosphere.

If this were a normal season, I don't think I'd care too much if the streak was broken with the Wings looking pathetic for most of late winter, early spring. But Tampa is not healthy and we will probably be looking for revenge. And Florida is inexperienced, so they are not unbeatable in the playoffs. And obviously whoever gets the 4 seed in our division series is not some juggernaut. I could see the Wings sneaking into the conference finals and then getting pummelled by the Caps or Pens. But in hockey, anything can happen.

With the new rules, don't they play Pens first round? I thought it was top overall plays bottom wild card, then winner of other division plays other wild card, then the runners up from each division play the third place from the opposing division. If that's correct, the 2-seed penguins out of the Met will be playing the 3-seed Wings out of the Atlantic.

Got so sick of all the complaining over every basketball loss and it looks like the same people are coming out of their holes to gripe about the Wings.  Please find another team to "root" for!!!

start a Posbang and see everyone participate. The Red Wings have been my favorite sports team (even more so than Michigan football) since the Demers era. I didn't think they would make it the last month, but they did, and anything can happen in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Most of all, I'm happy for Z, Pav, and Kronner because they're doing the best they can despite age, injury and wear and tear from the extra games borne from the streak. LGRW!!!!

but it has become pretty meaningless lately when they are destined to lose in the first or second round every year.  In fact, I think the streak is one of the reasons they haven't gone through a full and necessary rebuilding process.

I'd much rather they miss the playoffs a couple years and build a team that actually has a chance of competing for a Cup than the mediocre squads they have put on the ice the last 3-5 years.

they have drafted too well over the years to bottom out for top-5 picks. So if they're going to be just below elite anyway, it's better to make the playoffs. They could taken out Chicago a few years ago when they had a 3-1 series lead, and they could have beaten Tampa last year if not for Kronwall's suspension. If you think snout it, making the playoffs every year without Lidstrom and whiffing on Suter is quite impressive. The team depth will be better sooner rather than later. So as long as Holland stops handing out such generous long-term contracts, the future is bright.

They're not going to tank. Especially with a new arena coming in a couple years. Even if they didn't really make significant additions to make them a contender, the worst that would happen is just missing the playoff. And the chances of winning the lottery and moving into the top 5 is minimal. There's not a big difference between the 15-18th pick and the 10th-14th IMO. We can still get high quality players with where we're picking after just making the playoffs (ie Larkin and Mantha).

Need to keep drafting well and attract a top FA every now and then. Not tanking and risk losing solid young players through FA because we suck.
