RCMB Meltdown Alert

Mork confirmed that he will not be making any staff changes this offseason. They are not pelased, to say the least. Some really funny stuff in there. Early highlihgts include:

"This program is in disarray. Totally lost control. Things will be getting worse before getting better. This is a multi year reset project at the minimum. May never get us back to the playoff before he retires.

"Retires is the key word because Hollis isn't going to fire him. A repeat of this year next year and he should be fired. This season was inexcusable. Fucking disaster."

"Checked out mentally. Lost the fire. Saban broke him. Now he rides the gravy train padding his family's fortune until someone at MSU has the balls to pull the plug."

I think there are at least two related issues with that: 1. Recruits from their last couple of (relatively high-ranked) classes haven't been there that long. Assuming they're really better than the players from earlier classes, Dantonio might have one more good run in him. 2. MSU got to 10/11 wins when their 4th- and 5th-year guys were all from the early (and lower-ranked) classes. (It's true that the conference was less competitive then.) - - - Slightly off-topic: People (not necessarily you) started blaming Rodriguez for shaky recruiting almost right away. Obviously coaching had something to do with the start of the MSU losing streak ('08, '09, and '10), but Sparty was winning then with recruits that they snagged from the late Lloyd years.

This is a perfect storm.  I really do think staee will be garbage next year and my worry is not in Dantonio staying, because he is Lloyd Carr, msu version.  When met with a superior opposition he will fail more often than not.

My worry is PJ Fleck.  I was really hoping he would leave Western and get a big time job.  Now, I worry that he is waiting for Dantonio to retire or get fired.  PJ Fleck is the only coach that sparty could land and make me pause, literally the only coach.

Fleck doesn't worry me . . . yet.

I've seen too many hot-name young coaches from smaller schools rise to bigger programs and fall on their faces.  It's one thing to take a middling mid-tier program and bring them to a successful season as Fleck has done, it's a whole different thing to keep it there.  Show me a Chris Peterson who can keep a mid-level program in the 10-win range for several seasons, then I'll be scared.

We won't really know how good Fleck is until he gets a big boy job, or until he at least plays and beats better competition.

We all saw how good Herman really was when Houston beat up on FSU and Oklahoma at the end of last year and beginning of this year. Fleck definitely has the makings of a good coach, but he's beating a bunch of MAC nobodies. His best win this year was against who? Northwestern?

I'll reserve judgment until he proves he can win big at a bigger school, or until WMU knocks off a really good P5 program.

So by all means, fire him.  To me that would be the greatest Sparty NO! moment.

Even though I believe he's a great coach, it still needs to be said that he has enjoyed his success during the biggest stumble that Michigan has ever had.

to some degree Hoke.

But I believe he'll do fine against non Mich & OSU competition with Harbaugh's leftovers, some of whom will be pretty damn good.

OSU is having a spectacular recruiting season the year after they had 13 players drafted.  Remind me again the outlook for Michigan players in this upcoming draft?

This feels like a mjor turning point moment.

If they decide to do nothing and they go down hill fast, obviously this will have been the point where negative momentum could have been arrested and it wasn't, and the legacy of Dantonio takes a major hit. Even if they improve next year, and there are reasons to think they will, especially if Lewerke can be a top-half of the conference type QB (keep in mind that the B1G west loses multiple old hands who started for a long time and successors are uncertain), maybe this will be seen as the point where an opportunity for innovation was lost. Look at Ole Miss, which just hired the coach at Sam Houston State as its OC.

So let me get this straight : Mork takes State to places nobody ever thought possible and now, less than one calendar year removed from the playoffs, they're talking about firing him.

Clearly everyone over there is under 20 years old because 3 wins are closer to their historic norm than 11 are. How soon that gaggle of shitbags forget.

Don't get me wrong, they're not going to go 3-9 every year while Mork is still there, but their days of winning the B1G and beating OSU in the Shoe and UM at all is over.  They'll go back to beating UM once ever 4 or 5 years or so, winning 7 to 9 games a year, and being otherwise irrelevant as the Gods intended.

Harbaugh is not ignoring the local talent for the possibility of getting a few slightly higher rated players. Dantonio is going to struggle recruiting in-state like never before. He'll still find some good players, but those leftovers aren't going to be that great.

I don't like MSU's chances against PSU going forward. There's a big time reversal of the respective talent on those rosters under way. Any year MSU finishes better than 4th in the East will be an upset.

I think it's changed.  A few things led to their rise.

First, Dantonini is a good coach.  That won't change, though this year was dumbfounding.

Second, their defense - it was innovative and coached extremely well.  Even Narduzzi is getting run off the field at Pitt nowadays (and winning with offense).  People have begun to figure out the cover 4 now that everyone is running it.

Third, they got lucky with some great QBs, particularly Cousins and Cook.  Reversion to mean meant that O'Connor was inevitable.  Leveon Bell was also a lucky draw.

Fourth, down Michigan and rest of B1G sans OSU.

Two through Four are gone.

Imo a good coach doesnt go 3-9, maybe a .500 season. Not sure if his players gave up or he is done and getting ready to retire in a cpl of years. Hoke didnt even go 3-9 and we know who the better coach is between the two. I just think Mark caught a break and rode that train with Michigan, psu and osu (one year) being down. What gave him a huge boost was RR era when we went through the major systen overhaul and RR didnt recruit much locally.

the commitment train to UM the next few weeks. If DPJ goes to the good guys and especially if Irving-Bey puts a final nail in the coffin on January 7.

Not even sure how bad their class will finish, but UM in the top tier will cause a meltdown.

I will say Mike D'Antoni is loyal to these "unwanted" assistants.

Don't expect them to be better than 3-9 next year, but won't waste too much time thinking about them or their fans until next October.

What does this have to do DPJ or Harris?
