Purdue's Brohm: Hit on Speight was a clean play

Submitted by Communist Football on

That's what he said on the weekly B1G coaches' teleconference. From Aaron McMann at MLive:

"I didn't see anything egregious about it," Brohm said Tuesday on the Big Ten coaches teleconference. "I thought he made the tackle. I don't think there was a penalty called on it, was there?"...

"Yeah," Brohm said, when asked if it was a clean play. "From my standpoint, that's what it looked like."

Brohm also dismissed the locker-room talk:

"I can tell ya, a lot of visiting locker rooms across the country, it's not like your changing at the Marriott hotel," Brohm said. "They're normal locker rooms that definitely don't have a lot of the frills that you'd love to have, but it's a visiting locker room, you take it for what it's worth and you deal with it."

At least Purdue's previous coaches had class. Brohm is a full on douche sandwhich. I speak for intelligent purdue alums, when I say we are ashamed for our locker rooms and our ass hat coach.

I give Brohm credit for acknowledging the beatdown they received in the 2nd half and sticking up for his team.  There's no way I'd expect him to say anything remotely close to saying his guy made a dirty play.  That's all we'd need to submit to the B1G office to get dude suspended.

Considering they lost a guy to a BS targeting call against L'ville, I'm not surprised at all when a break went their way.

Gee whiz, Jeff, doesn't that mean the penalties they did call are proof of how dirty your team is? 5 personal fouls including 2 ejections seems pretty dirty to me.

This is one of the most blinkered approaches to a retort I've seen from an opponent. Purdon't - You are such nobody's. So glad we beat these cheap shot choo choo's coal shovelers. You will never be worthy of Michigan.

This is insane. Brohm might be a very bright coach from an X's and O's standpoint, but he's lost absolutely ALL respect from me as a person. Total bush league, douche bag with his words and his/his staff's dimeanor and attitude. I will be rooting against Purdue as long as he's there with the same vigor as I do against MSU.

You take your cheap shots, dirty players and third world facilities.

I’ll happily take kicking your team’s fucking ass up and down your own field in front of all your fans who suddenly remembered they had a football team.

we will play you in a parking lot and take your candy-ass team to the woodshed every time. Mark it down. If you were in the East, we would own your Twinkie team every year. Count your blessings Terdue resides in the B1G West.

Holy shit I actually was rooting for this guy to have a successful career before this game. Not providing A/C which could lead to harmful consequences on the players is not normal. That needs to be changed immediately for player safety. And the hit was dirty, simple. F U Brohm

Coach is in the Ring of Honor and is loved by the state. Denying obvious acts about targeting and facilities makes one question integrity and sportsmanship about the proram's future. Acting versus reality. Hostility versus competitiveness. Glad we have what we got - no trickery here. Alienating Hoosiers does not help in-state recruiting and their AD wants magic pills vs. a true foundation. Tom Crean wins round 2, in a way.

Will not do that because no one in the media or any high profile football position wants to admit Harbaugh to be correct about anything he says to the media or unfair play he calls into question. The league would rather avert its eyes from the truth just to avoid any alignment with JH.

seen guys after the tackle is made lead with their head or shoulder on a guy who is down and hit him after the fact as though it were just a momentum stopping hit that was unavoidable. But such hits can always be avoided. And sadly the truth is, unless it's flagged, the behavior is tolerated.

Fact is in that game, that hit was just a series of unneccessary roughness hits Purdue committed. I think when you watch Brohm's pregame speech and his antics on the sideline challenging non-calls and basically assuming throughout that because Michigan was the opponent his team would get secondhand treatment, he led his team accordingly.

That was my impression throughout the game. I immediately thought the hit on Speight was  late, unnecessary and gratuitous crowd-appealing contact, the subtle, borderline dangerous  because it occurs to a player who is already down and not expecting it.

I also thought Michigan should have been flagged for hitting a Purdue receiver in the endzone. And the failure to flag that play may have made up for the non-call on Speight. In any case, I can imagine Purdue calling attention to it in the wake of Harbaugh's comments.

Flags and penalties. It's not like us Michigan fans could justify a late hit or throw a flag. If it was late then of course we deserved a flag. We're not in denial. Lots of things go unnoticed. However, when a coach watches that film and goes out of his way to say,"I saw nothing wrong with that play!" That means he'll continue to teach his players, the wrong technique and sportsmanship, that each and every coach should avoid. Including our coach. Personal fouls are not a part of the game and they should be discouraged.

It's as if the "new, fresh, most prolific offense" any fox sportscasters have ever seen could only muster up ten points. It's like the most pumped up sold out crowd didn't matter because it was only really 43,000 Purdue fans and 21,000 Michigan fans. It's almost like nothing was really what it was...

Just when you thought you'd never look forward to playing Purdue again, this happens. People may not like Harbaugh but he sure makes football exponentially more entertaining:

I seriously don't get all the hate. I'm also not some biased fan who can't take his blue goggles off and see the world for what it is.

This is one of those days that puts Harbaugh in perspective. Numerous coaches get indicted for conspiracy and profiting off amateurs. SEC coaches are rumored to be involved in similar shady business (see Old Miss). The shelf life on those stories is like a day.

Meanwhile Harbaugh's schtick is hard work and even his strongest critics would probably agree that he's not a cheat and wouldn't cheat if presented the opportunity. On the other hand, he doesn't release a two deep soon enough for the media's liking and the stories just keep coming two months later.

I like rooting against the smug, arrogant, and the cheats, but Harbaugh doesn't seem exceptional to me in any of those categories. I still don't see why everyone gets so annoyed by Harbaugh. I read the stories, but they seem like child's play compared to the real bad guys of the coaching world. I would love to be enlightened. Any thoughts?

One final thought: Brohm was whining at half time about the officiating (while winning) and not one story was written about that. (As it should be.) Harbaugh loses a close game and complains and the world loses its shit.

That was dirty.

The guy who landed on the back of his head saw him and had enough time to at least try to avoid him. Instead, he slammed down on top of him as forcefully as he could.

Scum of the earth football player. That bum deserves no excuse.

Karate chop Speight. And just in case you didn't notice Speight was removed from the game because of the hit to the back of the head neck area defenseless. That is the truth. If you want to have a pity party for the one hit that we illegally performed against one of their players. Go BOILER UP! I'm sure they'll love you over there! That was no accident what continued to happen on the field Saturday. I was there. They were purposely out there trying to take out our players!!!

I'm not trolling - I'm pointing out that we also had an obvious targeting penalty go uncalled where Kinnel took an extra two steps after the ball went by before launching himself into a defenseless receiver.  It was fortunate nobody was hurt - and it was unfortunate that Speight was hurt on the other play that wasn't called, which in my perspective was also a dirty play.  This isn't a pity party - it's a "try to have some perspective" party if you will.

I'll agree with you that the play was consistently aggressive on the Purdue side and that aggression/recklessness led to some pretty dirty hits.  However, it's pretty hilarious that someone calling for a little perspective is instantly a troll that should go Boiler Up.

I don't think Harbaugh would have made a huge deal out of the locker rooms if it did not feel like a sauna. The lack of A/C was the big issue, not really the small bathrooms and old training table. You can't help but get irritable when you're trapped in a hot room.

The dismissal by Purdue's coach and administration is just silly. So, student athletes are supposed to spend a few hours in a sweaty "hotbox" because that's just how visiting locker rooms are? Give me a break
