PSU's Journey Brown is no longer playing football
Per James Franklin on the twitters. Not COVID related, but apparently something medical means his career is over. He was a projected potential first round draft pick. PSU was waiting on a second opinion and it means his career is done. No other details yet.

That sucks for him.

A mutual friend confirms its a heart issue but won't go into details, which would make sense with the retirement. Seriously sad and I wish him nothing but a full and long life doing something he loves
EDIT: His farewell post confirms hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

That is terrible news. My thoughts are with that young man and his family. I hope that he can still take advantage of his education and have successful career!
This is a perfect example of why college athletes should be able to profit from their NIL. He could have already built a small nest egg to help kick start his career.

Truly awful, I hope he's able to transition to a life post athletics smoothly.

Heartbreaking. I coached against him his junior year of HS. Was an absolute beast.
Thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

Well this just sucks. I feel for the man and hope the best for him. Talk about dong punches...
November 11th, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
That's rough - hope he makes the most of his education. There is a lot more to life than football.
November 11th, 2020 at 7:25 PM ^
Best of luck to this young man. It sucks to have to go separate ways with the sport you've faithfully played your entire life. Hope he can have a long and happy productive life.

I can't imagine how tough that would be for a guy like him. I imagine football has dominated his life thus far, I hope he can find something he's just as passionate about. Huge loss for PSU and football fans too, he was fun to watch.

That sucks, poor kid. He seems in good spirits and taking it as well as one can.

That’s a real bummer for him. Should have had some money in his pocket from NIL. At least they caught it before something horrific happened.
this is why you don’t recruit 3 stars /s

Absolutely awful, he was great to watch. Feel terrible for him.
November 11th, 2020 at 8:01 PM ^
Wow, that is sad. 2020 is not a good year to be a human. I hope he can still finish his education.

Transfer to a Big Ten West team and play average. That’s how Jim does it, James.
November 11th, 2020 at 8:29 PM ^
Terrible news for him, but hopes and prayers for a healthy life. Here's hoping he can get a quality education and achieve other life goals. Best of luck young man!

Hopefully its like when M players medically retire, and he transfers elsewhere to a successful career.

that's a bad comment, and you should feel bad.
November 11th, 2020 at 8:58 PM ^
That sucks. The kid was super explosive, too.

Bummer for Journey Brown.
For the older folk, Brown appears destined to be remembered among PSU folks like Aaron Harris in the mid-1990s. They weren't the same sort of running back, but both will have a "what could have been without health problems" aura.
Harris was a beast in the 1997 PSU/OSU game, one of those absolutely fantastic football games that has gotten lost to history. Harris tore his ACL the next week against Minnesota. And that was it for Harris, and that was also it for the 1997 PSU team to an extent too. Harris against the 1997 U-M defense a few weeks later would have been interesting, had it happened. Not saying the result would have been different, but Harris was certainly something that Curtis Enis wasn't.

I remember those teams well in the psu '95-'99 years. I played football with Dustin Fox (who was also one of the two best men at my wedding...yeah I was one of those guys that couldn't decide lol). Anyway...I went with him to a lot of psu games to watch his brother Derek Fox play.
I have no idea how one of those psu teams didn't win a NC.

Feel really bad for him, and hopefully he'll at least get his degree and move on. But a big loss for him and PSU.
November 11th, 2020 at 10:36 PM ^
I wish this kid the best. It really sucks to have give up a lifelong dream and move on.
November 12th, 2020 at 12:25 AM ^
That’s awful. Can he coach?

Health > football

Crazy thing...Slade transfers because he isn't getting the reps. He followed RIcky Rahne to ODU. Now Brown is retired and Noah Cain is out for the year. He mentored Devyn Ford, and now he's the only back left on the roster.

I’m surprised a cardiac work up isn’t part of the recruiting process. It would benefit both sides. I guess it’s rare enough to not worry and most cases are symptomatic early.
