The money in the NBA for even average players is getting out of control. If these guys end up broke I don't feel sorry for them.

Smith can't shoot 3s or defend, but he's ultra-quick and seems to be improving steadily as a floor general. He's essentially a poor man's version of Jackson and will let the Pistons offense keep flowing when Jackson sits. Steve Blake was bad and Smith is probably an average backup PG, so he makes the team a bit better.

Most importantly, they got him for a reasonable price.  Avoding doing something dumb like paying Dellevedova a giant bucket of money is good news for a GM with a mixed track record in free agency (to put it kindly).

It also keeps their options open for another forward or wing.

This is a great move for Detroit. They've upgraded a position of need (granted, they could have signed me and it would have been an upgrade over Blake), and that contract is going to become an even bigger bargain with the cap jumps against next year.
