Pat Forde: Maryland Interested in Durkin

Submitted by sundaybluedysunday on

Pat Forde is reporting that Maryland officials have met with DJ Durkin and came away extremely impressed. While it isn't all that surprising that he's getting some interviews, I certainly wasn't expecting him to land a power five job this offseason. Going to be interesting to see if anything develops.

Durkin can do so much better than Maryland. I guess if you want to just start working as a HC it's fine, but it doesn't seem like it is worth it given how bad they look.

Durkin will get his chance soon enough, but it won't be for friggin' Maryland. There will be other opportunities where he A) doesn't have to take over a doormat, B) doesn't have to take over a doormat at the bottom of the toughest division in college football, and C) doesn't take over a team in the same division as his current employer.

I don't doubt that Maryland is interested. But this makes zero sense from Durkin's side.

ideas for potential replacements:

Shaffer - Michigan and Harbaugh experience, though limited.

Jon Hoke - Families are friends and incredibly experienced as both a college DC and NFL coach, which Harbaugh is known to like

Mattison - on staff, easiest transition

Random NFL guy - this is the Harbaugh MO

I understand that he is a young, hungry coach and would like the be a head coach. And I also understand it will happen sooner, than later.

But I do not understand why he would take a job in the same division as his mentor. If there were no other P5 jobs out there this year, it might make some sense. But there are tons of jobs open out there,  with more to come in the next few weeks. Why would he want to have to coach against Harbaugh, his mentor, every year? Just does not make sense.

I call BS.

I don't think taking a job where you have to compete with your mentor is the issue. Bo seemed fine taking a job where he had to compete agains Woody in the most extreme manner. He may not have left Woody and gone directly to UM, but he was definitely mentored by Woody.

Maryland would be a tough gig as noted by so many because of the division he'd be competing in. Durkin will have his day. Hopefully, it will be sometime after 2016! His resume will only get better next year if our expectations are even close to correct.

Kind of an odd risk for Maryland. They aren't going to have a top 15 defense....ever. They do, however, seem to be a school that could become a high octane, uptempo offense. Durkin will do well anywhere, but his defensive background seems like an odd fit for Maryland

I could see Durkin passing on this opportunity for two reasons. 1. He knows that there's something special happening in AA. There aren't too many opportunities to be a part of something like that in your career so he might want to enjoy the ride for a bit. And 2. If something special does happen at Michigan the next few years he should get opportunities at bigger programs such as Texas/Oklahoma/LSU at some point in the future.

Also, Kiffin to Maryland, yes please!

After the comedy of "reports" last year during our coaching search I will take all reports in the future with a grain of salt. These "insiders" take any whispers they hear and run with it. If they end up being right by some stroke of luck they end up being the one to report it first. If not it gets lost in the fray as misinformation and they don't lose anything by being wrong.

Not that I'm worried about Maryland, but the crazy number of head coach openings across the power five really has me wondering if Durkin doesn't get poached right away. Ordinarily, I'd agree with the sentiment that he needs another year or two to build his reputation to land at a worthwhile program, but this season has been nuts with the firings and we haven't even wrapped the regular season.

If Durkin wants to get a head-coaching job this year, he'll leave. There's no getting around it; the market is wide-open, and good programs are going to be desperate for coaches. Durkin is a rising star, so he will get looks. If MD wants him, they'll make an offer. If he declines, it's because he thinks he can get a better job. Perhaps this year, perhaps (we can hope) an even better job next year. But he's going to go.

you have to play Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State.

In addition to the four games above

In 2016 Maryland travels to Nebraska

In 2017 Maryland travels to Wisconsin and a non-conference opening game at Texas, finish with Michigan, PSU, MSU in a row

In 2018 Maryland opens with Texas, travels to Iowa

This is a death job for anyone.

So in 6 days I've seen Maryland wants O'Brian, Mullen, and Durkin per "sources".

Yes it's going to take about 3 head coaches to beat Meyer, Dantonio, and Harbaugh and slide into 3rd place in the East once every 5 years.

Let's face it the guy is going to leave to be a head coach at some point, probably sooner rather than later.

What REALLY bothers me about this is that he's entertaining their offer the week of the game. Honestly, couldn't he tell them to call back in 1-2 weeks after our season is over so he can focus on what he should be focusing on?

Highly disappointing. Harbaugh and be players deserve better from him.
