Partridge to receive Promotion

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Not unexpected after Durkin's overtures. I am more than fine with having the guy who built Paramus Catholic coaching our players, especially on defense (hi Peppers and Gary!).

Hearing that Chris Partridge will be staying on at #Michigan in an increased role. Details likely to to be released soon

If Harbaugh was bringing in an outsider to be DC, that's a one-for-one swap, and there wouldn't be any position coaching spot for Partridge to move to.

If, for example, Jackson becomes a full-time DC and gives up his position coaching spot, then Partridge could become a position coach. Might end up with some shuffling around of position responsibilities, but that's not uncommon anyhow.

However, it could also mean that he's being promoted administratively. Maybe Jim Minick is stepping down in his role and Partridge is moving up to a higher role? Minick is an Associate AD.

I'd say it's one of the two.

My point is that he could be promoted higher than recruiting coordinator and still not be an assistant coach. I, like you, assume it's a coaching role because of his experience as a coach. But just tossing the idea out there that he's got room for growth with his current job as well.

Right. It is also likely that Harbaugh knew when hiring Durkin that DJ was planning on moving on soon. So, Harbaugh hires Partridge as a coach in waiting. I think something similar has gone on with Fisch and Eric Campbell. Speculation, no source.

He had just had his job with Rutgers fall through and was suddenly out of work. His former job had just been taken by a former Harbaugh player. He gave us inroads into recruiting in NJ and came cheaply. I suspect if the plan was for him to be a coach in waiting, that he would have been given some coaching responsibilities like TJ Weist or Erik Campbell. Those two have very good coaching resumes. I think they probably are coaches  in waiting. Partridge's experience is on a much lower level.

From what Webb was saying on the radio this morning, he implied (or I inferred) that Partridge wants to return to active on-the-field coaching rather than remain in an administrative capacity, which is where he is now. Seeing as Partridge is still pretty young and has a reputation as an aggressive go-getter, I have a hard time envisioning somebody like that being content with a behind-the-scenes desk job, regardless of how important it is.

Per NCAA rules, if you lose a coach, you can promote a staffer to a coaching role with coaching duties (meaning they can recruit and have contact with student athletes).

It would be smart on Michigan's part to promote Partridge right now (he could already be promoted) so he can go out and recruit on the road. Even if neither side wants it to be a permanent role.

This happens all the time with GA coaches or Director of (insert sport) Operations. In basketball, the DOBO is immediately elevated so he/she can coach and recruit and more times than not the position is filled with a new coach and the DOBO resumes his/her old responsibilities.

It sounds "mean," but it actually helps that person get some temporary experience and a little nugget on his/her resume.

...I'd be interested to know if Partridge is not already out on the road recruiting while Harbaugh sorts things out...if not him, who did they elevate? Carr? Campbell?

I think it is best served to get a DC in here soon ...not wait 5 weeks for a bowl.  We have a lot of D recruits who are going to be making decisions Jan 9th or earlier.  Not having a permanent DC all that time is not a great look - they want to know who they will play for.

If you preach taking advantage of every second and every day...yes, you move him into that role that allows him to actually coach and/or recruit rather than being down a man.

It's common practice around the country in all sports. Doesn't matter if it's football or field hockey.

Chris Singletary, remember him? He did this MULTIPLE times when we lost staffers, but his job was always the same in the long run.

It actually is an advantage to have him on the road recruiting when we were looking for replacements. Considering he knew all of the guys already. He didn't have to wait for them to come to campus.

no official response from Harbaugh regarding news of Durkin's departure, nor does it seem like beyond getting feedback from recruits about the Durkin departure, does the program seem rattled by the move at all. It just seems to be the coach's approach to everything: deal with it and move on by getting better by all means possible.

being a position coach. Defensive analyst, for example. But I think it makes sense to offer him more pay and maybe a promotion in his work in recruiting  Maybe they could be combined. I look at our young, inexperienced and completely unproven LB group and think we need a top notch position coach for them more than anything else. Putting Partridge in charge of them should be a total non-starter.

Umm... if its a coach someone else has to leave the staff.  We only have 1 allowed opening and that guy has to be both the DC and a position coach (LB) at this time.  Once we hire a DC all positions full.  Will be interesting what happens.
