Partridge to receive Promotion
Not unexpected after Durkin's overtures. I am more than fine with having the guy who built Paramus Catholic coaching our players, especially on defense (hi Peppers and Gary!).
Hearing that Chris Partridge will be staying on at #Michigan in an increased role. Details likely to to be released soon

If Harbaugh was bringing in an outsider to be DC, that's a one-for-one swap, and there wouldn't be any position coaching spot for Partridge to move to.
If, for example, Jackson becomes a full-time DC and gives up his position coaching spot, then Partridge could become a position coach. Might end up with some shuffling around of position responsibilities, but that's not uncommon anyhow.

Good insight.

Partridge is a LB coach by trade according to Rivals.
December 3rd, 2015 at 3:17 PM ^
Well that works out swimmingly, doesn't it?
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:12 PM ^
However, it could also mean that he's being promoted administratively. Maybe Jim Minick is stepping down in his role and Partridge is moving up to a higher role? Minick is an Associate AD.
I'd say it's one of the two.
My point is that he could be promoted higher than recruiting coordinator and still not be an assistant coach. I, like you, assume it's a coaching role because of his experience as a coach. But just tossing the idea out there that he's got room for growth with his current job as well.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
I would much prefer this. Because otherwise it implies Durkin offer forced Jim's hand on Partridge.

He had just had his job with Rutgers fall through and was suddenly out of work. His former job had just been taken by a former Harbaugh player. He gave us inroads into recruiting in NJ and came cheaply. I suspect if the plan was for him to be a coach in waiting, that he would have been given some coaching responsibilities like TJ Weist or Erik Campbell. Those two have very good coaching resumes. I think they probably are coaches in waiting. Partridge's experience is on a much lower level.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:15 PM ^
From what Webb was saying on the radio this morning, he implied (or I inferred) that Partridge wants to return to active on-the-field coaching rather than remain in an administrative capacity, which is where he is now. Seeing as Partridge is still pretty young and has a reputation as an aggressive go-getter, I have a hard time envisioning somebody like that being content with a behind-the-scenes desk job, regardless of how important it is.

Per NCAA rules, if you lose a coach, you can promote a staffer to a coaching role with coaching duties (meaning they can recruit and have contact with student athletes).
It would be smart on Michigan's part to promote Partridge right now (he could already be promoted) so he can go out and recruit on the road. Even if neither side wants it to be a permanent role.
This happens all the time with GA coaches or Director of (insert sport) Operations. In basketball, the DOBO is immediately elevated so he/she can coach and recruit and more times than not the position is filled with a new coach and the DOBO resumes his/her old responsibilities.
It sounds "mean," but it actually helps that person get some temporary experience and a little nugget on his/her resume.
...I'd be interested to know if Partridge is not already out on the road recruiting while Harbaugh sorts things out...if not him, who did they elevate? Carr? Campbell?
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:22 PM ^
Are you saying promote him for a week or 10 days until a DC is hired? Then back behind the desk?
I would just have him move in with Gary until we get a DC then.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:25 PM ^
Maybe a promotion to LB coach for bowl practice and the bowl games as a test run while Jackson or Mattison is DC. If it works he gets position full time.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:32 PM ^
I think it is best served to get a DC in here soon ...not wait 5 weeks for a bowl. We have a lot of D recruits who are going to be making decisions Jan 9th or earlier. Not having a permanent DC all that time is not a great look - they want to know who they will play for.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:40 PM ^
Possible the coach they find will want to stay with their team through bowls/end of season for NFL. So they could have a name but an open coaching spot until then.
December 3rd, 2015 at 3:46 PM ^
If you preach taking advantage of every second and every day...yes, you move him into that role that allows him to actually coach and/or recruit rather than being down a man.
It's common practice around the country in all sports. Doesn't matter if it's football or field hockey.
Chris Singletary, remember him? He did this MULTIPLE times when we lost staffers, but his job was always the same in the long run.
It actually is an advantage to have him on the road recruiting when we were looking for replacements. Considering he knew all of the guys already. He didn't have to wait for them to come to campus.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
no official response from Harbaugh regarding news of Durkin's departure, nor does it seem like beyond getting feedback from recruits about the Durkin departure, does the program seem rattled by the move at all. It just seems to be the coach's approach to everything: deal with it and move on by getting better by all means possible.
December 3rd, 2015 at 2:40 PM ^
during the coaching search?
December 3rd, 2015 at 3:45 PM ^
That is correct.
I know DeBord was brought in for some capacity, but I can't remember what...
December 3rd, 2015 at 8:43 PM ^
Fuck your downvote...I don't hear you haters
December 3rd, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
I'm talking about Will Carr.
I think that was obvious, but you never know...
December 3rd, 2015 at 2:25 PM ^
Partridge has wanted a COACHING ROLE. He would take the coaching role at Maryland over and administrative role at Michigan I would think.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:13 PM ^
Or Jackson of Fisch leaves?
But I wrote similar idea below (mediocre minds think alike). We only have 1 opening. If he becomes a coach someone currently must go or its an internal hire for DC.
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:18 PM ^
I think it's very likely Fisch was only brought in for this one year. It was all based on how cheap you could get him with Jax still paying just about all of his salary.
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
being a position coach. Defensive analyst, for example. But I think it makes sense to offer him more pay and maybe a promotion in his work in recruiting Maybe they could be combined. I look at our young, inexperienced and completely unproven LB group and think we need a top notch position coach for them more than anything else. Putting Partridge in charge of them should be a total non-starter.
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
then I tip my cap to Harbaugh for thinking two steps ahead of everyone else. Doesn't he have Soup Campbell in the program somewhere? Waiiting in the wings for when Fisch goes back to the NFL (as is the constant speculation)?
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
Partridge could be promoted to a coaching role temporarily to help with recruiting. That's what Michigan did with Chris Singletary previously. However, I do not think Partridge will be a position coach at Michigan by the time the 2016 season rolls around.
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:15 PM ^
Coordinators are almost always also position coaches. You are only allowed nine assistants including coordinators.
December 3rd, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
I think it's pretty expected that Fisch is gone after this year. Jax was paying just about all of his salary (one year only). Mich got him for $200k which is a steal of a loan for what he brings to the table. That's one spot that is almost guaranteed to be open after this year.
December 3rd, 2015 at 2:53 PM ^
Why should he make more as a position coach somewhere else? If someone offers him a good OC job, that's a different story.
December 3rd, 2015 at 3:49 PM ^
Ya I didn't really say it but I think he's looking to coach in the NFL with more responsibility. He went from NFL OC to position coach in college. Seems almost like he was doing Harbaugh a favor until something bigger in the NFL opened up. But that's just my opinion.
December 3rd, 2015 at 4:32 PM ^
but who knows when that NFL opportunity will come. I'm in favor of keeping him until then. He may even decide he likes coaching here more than he anticipated.

I like Partridge a lot! He's worked hard and deserves a bigger role!
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:08 PM ^
How much longer do we get to keep him on the cheap? that could create an extra spot in theory.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:16 PM ^
I think when he was hired last year it was the only 1 yr contract among coaches no? Most assumed it was just a resting stop before going on to another job higher up the food chain
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:32 PM ^
I get that, but he was still getting paid for the nfl so was willing to take a smaller paycheck. Was wondering if we had another year to keep him cheap.

why Fisch's salary was so low. I think he will get offered a big raise to stay. Maybe not a promotion to co-OC, but perhaps a salary in line with that role. Every time you'd hear Harbaugh talk about play calling it was clear Fisch played a big part.

December 3rd, 2015 at 12:09 PM ^
Umm... if its a coach someone else has to leave the staff. We only have 1 allowed opening and that guy has to be both the DC and a position coach (LB) at this time. Once we hire a DC all positions full. Will be interesting what happens.
December 3rd, 2015 at 12:15 PM ^
I thought the number was 27 OR 28 depending on attrition or something like that?
